Freeman Wareham was born in 1901 at Haystack, Placentia Bay and at a young age entered his father's fishery supply business, established at Spencer's Cove. At age 12 he survived a harrowing winter shipwreck on southern Miquelon, but managed to get ashore and walked several miles to the nearest village. In the early 1920's he succeeded his father as manager of Alberto Wareham Ltd., a business he was to operate for more than 70 years. The company owned a number of foreign-going vessels, trading with Spain, Portugal and the West Indies. The best known of these were the four- master schooner "Herbert L. Rawding" and the banking schooner "Alberto Wareham". The company employed hundreds of people, fishermen, sailors, blacksmiths, coopers, sailmakers, office workers, and many more. After a devastating fire in 1964, the business relocated to Arnold's Cove, in part because of the government-sponsored resettlement program. In response to the needs for a safe and secure way to transport houses from the islands slated for resettlement, the company constructed a large floating barge, which was capable of carrying the houses. Over the next five years, more than 70 houses were transported to a number of communities on the Placentia Bay coastline. He was a founding member of the Arnold's Cove Lions Club, a recipient of the Lieutenant Governor's Canada 125 Medal, and a life-long member of the Anglican Church, first at Spencer's Cove and then at Arnold's Cove. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends who give thanks for his long and productive life. Resting at Fewer's Funeral Home, Arnold's Cove.
