ACORN, Clara Agnes - 82, of Clarke`s Beach, Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), passed away suddenly on November 13, 2002, in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Fogo, NL, she was a daughter of the late Allan and Elizabeth (Tizzard) Hart. Clara was a very caring, loving and generous mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by all her family. Left to celebrate her life and legacy are beloved daughter Elizabeth Humber, Halifax; sons: Alan (Sandra) Humber, St. John`s, Harold (Betty) Humber, Ottawa, Dr. Robert (Dr. Anne Perry) Humber, Bay Roberts, NL; grandchildren: Brian (Elaine) Humber, Barrie, ON, Nancy (Terry) Fahey, Ottawa, David (Christina) Humber, Ottawa, Lara (Corey) Robinson, Lantz, Jason (Christa) Humber, Calgary; great-grandchildren: Matthew and Brandon Humber, Barrie, Jessica and Julia Fahey, Ottawa; brothers: Raymond and Austin (Rosemary) Hart, all of Fogo; sisters: Stella (Frank) Dean, Botwood, NL, Wilhelmina (Benson) Hewitt, Fogo; many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends living in various parts of Canada and the USA. She was predeceased by her husband Ralph of 25 years and her former husband George Humber. At her request, cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 16, 2002, in the Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Road, Halifax, Reverend Patricia Malin officiating. ADAMS, Elmer - Passed peacefully away after a long and courageous battle with cancer at Dr. G.B.Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville on Thursday, November 14, 2002, Elmer Adams of Milton, aged 56 years. Predeceased by his mother Cassandra and his father Emmanuel. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories, his wife Shirley of 36 years; daughters: Susan (Allan Vardy), Chaulk River, ON and Jennifer (Bob Currie), Britannia; son Keith (Sylvia), Milton; sisters: Sandra Adams, Milton, Pauline (Fred Barnes), Buchans and Audrey (John Coady), St. John`s; brother Byron (Theresa), Milton; brother-in-law Kevin French (Peggy), Paradise; grandchildren Robin, Jeremy, Andrew, Katie and Mark and a large circle of family and friends. AGATE, Barbara - Passed peacefully away at Placentia Health Care Center after a short, courageous battle with cancer on November 25, 2002 of Placentia. Predeceased by her father, Augustine J. Greene of Placentia. Leaving to mourn her mother Jean (Ross) Greene, her son Michael (Cathy), daughter Tracey; grandchildren: Michael, Matthew, Christopher, Bradley and Andrew; also five sisters: Louise Mirra, New York, Diane Sevco (John), California, Linda Boohlke (Joe), Placentia, Cathy Sieben (Kevin), Colorado and Angela Dohey (Philip), Placentia, as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews and other relatives and close friends. Resting at Coombs Funeral Home, Placentia. Visitation 2-10 Tuesday and Wednesday. ALVAREZ, Myrtle Agnes (Jaynes) - In memory of Myrtle Agnes Alvarez (Jaynes), 90, of Vero Beach, Florida, died November 14, 2002 at Hospice House, Vero Beach, FL. Born January 5, 1912, in Chelsea, MA, she spent her childhood growing up in her beloved Newfoundland, Canada. Married to Frederick W. Alvarez, Sr., for over 60 years, she raised her three children in Melrose, MA. Her love of teaching was fulfilled as founder of the Merry-Go-Round Nursery School. They retired to Florida in 1981. She was a member of the Lakewood Park Methodist Church where she was a volunteer of the Mustard Seed and a member of the Helping Hands. Survivors include her son, Frederick William Alvarez, Jr. of Gloucester, MA; her daughters: Janice Libby Alvarez of Vero Beach, FL, Diana Maria Alvarez of North Bethesda, MD; her sister, Ethel F. (Jaynes) Nolan of Vero Beach, FL; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: VNA Hospice House, 901 37th St., Vero Beach, FL. 32960. A Funeral Service was held on Monday, November 18, 2002, at 11:00 A.M., at Lakewood Park United Methodist Church.

ANDREWS, Ada W. - Heart`s Desire (wife of the late Marcus Andrews) passed away peacefully at the Carbonear General Hospital, Carbonear, NL on Monday, November 11, 2002. Mrs. Andrews was 82 years old. She was predeceased by her husband Marcus Andrews, parents: Robert & Edith LeDrew, son Derrick. She leaves to mourn her loving family: children: Susie Regular, Heart`s Content, Lewis (Eleanor) Andrews, Heart`s Desire, Wilson (Lorraine) Andrews, Kitchener, Ont., Annie (Mervin) Okum, Golden Lake, Ont., David Andrews (Beatrice Sooley), Islington, NL, Bernice (Gary) Vannetter, Kitchener, Ont., Jean (Jim) Coombs, Heart`s Desire, Thomas (Joan) Andrews, St. John`s, Gwen (Boyd), Legge, Mount Pearl, Maxine (Dwaine) Rowe, Kitchener, Ont., Edmund (Cheryl), Trenton, N.S. Sister: Gladys King, Grand Falls/Winsor; twenty-four grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren; a large circle of relatives and friends. ANDREWS, Lewis - Formerly of Corner Brook. Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Complex, Lewis Andrews, age 94 years. Predeceased by his wife Isabel, July 19, 2000. Left to celebrate his life and mourn his passing, his family, daughters: Gertrude Andrews and Joan Basic (Zvonko); sons: Fred (Violet) Andrews, Lew (Denise) Andrews; and grandchildren: Stephanie Basic-Sedore (Jason), ON, Anthony Basic, Monica Basic and her children Theresa and Nathan, BC; sisters-in-law: Effie (Ches) Oake, Florida, Eleanor Andrews, Winnipeg, Alice Andrews, St. John`s, Gwen (Rev. Douglas) Best; nieces and nephews and their families: Fred (Patsy) Andrews, Peter (Judy) Andrews, Mary Andrews, Paul (Doris) Andrews, Jim (Selina) Andrews, Patti (Ric) Moody, Margie (Dr. Jerry) Sparkes, Bonnie (Moss) Holland, Doug (Judy) Best, David Parsons, Arch (Selina) Parsons and a large circle of other relatives and friends. A teacher for 20 years and businessman for over 40 years, he provided public service in Corner Brook over the years as President of the Chamber of Commerce, Secretary of the Public School Board, Vice Chairman of Herdman Collegiate School Board, representative on the School Tax Authority and President of the Assoc. of Amalgamated School Boards of Newfoundland. He was a member of the Retired Teacher`s Assoc., the St. John`s Senior Citizen`s Club and also a 50 year member of Lomond Masonic Lodge. Known as an avid golfer, he achieved the ultimate "hole-in-one" on two occasions, shot his age from 73 to 83 and most proud of being a member of the Newfoundland Senior Golf Championship teams in 1980 and 1983. Resting at Carnell`s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Friday 10:00 a.m. to Noon. Predeceased by husband, James; brothers, James P. and Edward; sisters, Anne, Ellen and Veronica. Leaving to mourn, four sisters-in-law, Ivy Rose, Ochre Pit Cove, Mary (Kenneth) Brown, Ottawa, Ont., Ann Pierce and Sarah Baird, both of St. John`s; also a large number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. BALLARD, Geraldine Lavina - (Age 64 years). Passed peacefully away on Friday, November 29, 2002 surrounded by her family after a lengthy illness at St. Clare`s Mercy Hospital. Predeceased by mother Margaret Ballard (nee Burke), father Frank Ballard and grandson Matthew Wiseman. She is survived by her children David Wiseman of St. John`s, Dennis Wiseman of Ottawa, Dan Wiseman (Bev) of St. John`s, Donna Mowat (Maurice) of Tottenham, Diane Morgan (Cec) of St. John`s, Donald Wiseman of Kingston and Darryl Wiseman (Colleen) of Paradise. Grandchildren Jennifer Wiseman, Amanda Burry, Christine, Colin and Sarah Wiseman, Luke Wiseman, Jonathan Mowat, Justin Morgan and Kayla; Aunt Ella Pearce (Des). Brothers Harry (Lita) and Delmer (Corey). She missed her mother for so long, now she is finally with her. Following cremation, a funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 30 at 12 noon from Caul`s Funeral Home Chapel, LeMarchant Road. BATTCOCK, Sheila - It is with great sadness that the family of Sheila Battcock announce "Heaven has claimed another angel" on November 1, 2002 (All Saints Day). Sheila departed our world surrounded in the love of her husband of 43 years, John F. Battcock; her daughters Jeanine Cardinali (Tony), Jo-Ann O`Brien (Dulach), Michele Draper (Jeff); and son Johnny Battcock (Barbara). Tara, Rory, Liam, Mark, Alley, Danny and Ryan will never forget their darling Nanny. Awaiting Sheila`s arrival in Heaven are her parents, Mary and William Howlett with her brothers Martin and Jack Howlett. Carmel Buckingham and Sheilagh McGrath (Robert) will cherish the memory of a wonderful sister-in-law. Brother Bernard Howlett (Pats) and sisters Bridget Hannis (Rollin) and Patricia Cass will dearly miss their baby sister. Diane Chaulk (Leslie) and children Melanie, Monique and Michael will deeply miss a special and loving influence in their lives. Anne Galway (John) will cherish the memory of a longtime best friend. The Florida Snow Birds will miss an important member of their flock. Her spirit will continue to shine with the many friends she loved dearly. BUTLER EASON, Ealie (nee Rideout) - Passed peacefully away at the Palliative Care Unit in the presence of her loving family on November 10, 2002, a few hours short of her 67th birthday. She is predeceased by her husband John in 1994; her son Peter in 1997; and son-in-law Bob Pomeroy in 2002. CHAFE, Francis Chesley - On November 2, 2002 Frank peacefully passed away surrounded by family. Loving and devoted husband to Ina is survived by his children Donna (Shawn), Philip (Heather), and Sonja (Chris). His adoring grandchildren Kelsey, Rebecca, Kyrsten, John, Katherine, Ian, and Michael will miss their Poppy. He is also survived by his brothers Reg (Bernice), Kevin (Sheila) and sister Evelyn (Frank). He is predeceased by his mother (Effie) and father (Edward) and brother (Cecil). Frank had a large and loving family and many close friends who are all better for having him touch their lives. A celebration of his life was held in Burlington, Ontario, on November 6th. The interment will be held at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church in Topsail at 3 p.m. on November 10th with a reception to follow at the S.U.F. Hall. CHURCHILL, Cyril - It is with deep sadness, after a long illness, we announce the passing of our precious father, Cyril Churchill, age 82 years, on Sunday, November 17, 2002. A WWII Veteran, he served with the 166th Newfoundland Field Regiment RA, in the North African and Italian Campaigns. He was a proud lifelong member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #1 and a founding member of the Singing Legionnaires. Retired (1980) Conciliation Officer with the Provincial Department of Labour, he was a devoted and faithful civil servant with a very successful ratio of labour dispute settlements. Since 1990 he resided with his daughter in Whitby, Ontario. Predeceased by his dear wife Mabel in 1985 and brother Reginald in 1994. Leaving to mourn his son Warren, Whitby and daughter Faustina (Tina) Budden, Whitby; four granddaughters: Shauna (Budden) Escorcio (David), Kristina (Churchill) Reid (Dave), Karen and Keri Churchill, Whitby; brothers: Sheldon (Irene), Weston (Winn), Jim (Ruth) and Ross (Sonia), all of Nfld.; sisters: Mabel Warren (Ernie-deceased 2002), New Brunswick, Gertrude and Rita Melendy (Carl), Nfld.; and two very special people: Cecilia Hynes and Gary Budden (deceased 2000); Sadly missed by many dear friends, nieces and nephews. COBB, George E. - The death of George Edgar Cobb, age 90, of Brookview Crescent, Saint John, husband of Ruby (Learning) Cobb, occurred on Monday, November 11, 2002 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Barr'd Island NF, he was the son of the late Joseph and Julia (Downer) Cobb. George was employed with the Dept. of National Revenue in Public Service for over 40 years. He was a member of the St. George`s Masonic Lodge, St. John`s NF. FISHER, Robert Otto Milan - of Bauline, died peacefully on Sunday, November 3, 2002 in Chatham, Ontario at age 53. Robert was strongly committed to his family and community. He was an individual of many eclectic interests. In addition to his first love of biology, he was an enthusiast of the arts, a licensed pilot, a certified diver, an avid outdoorsman and the Town of Bauline`s longest serving mayor. Eileen is survived by sister Stella Spracklin of Waterford, Ont., and was predeceased by sisters: Florence MacLennan, Vida Stotts, Nellie Spracklin and brothers: Maxwell, Doug and Boyd. She is survived by numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews. A long time member of Lincoln Road United Church, Eileen began her career as a teacher in Newfoundland, and later was extremely active in the Windsor Home & School Association, starting at Frank W. Begley Public School, then on the executive of the Windsor H&S Council and finally at the provincial level where she served as Ontario President for several years. Resting in the Walter D. PELLEY, Margaret Eleanor - Passed peacefully away at the Agnes Pratt Home on November 6, 2002, Margaret Eleanor Pelley, aged 88 years. Predeceased by parents: Daniel Ethan Pelley and Hilda Goobie Pelley; sisters: Doris Mercer and Susanna Puddester; brother Edwin Pelley; niece Judy Mercer; great-niece Nikki McGrath. Margaret was an exceptional musician and spent 64 years with the George Street United Church Choir. She played organ for both George Street and Wesley Churches and was involved in the Kiwanis Festivals over the years. Margie was close to and loved by nephew Dan Puddester and niece Jan Pelley McGrath and their families. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by sister-in-law Marguerite Pelley; niece Susan Pelley; nephews: Richard Pelley, Kenneth Mercer, Sandy Mercer and their families. Margie has many friends and she has left us with a legacy of wonderful memories, a sense of fun and a love of music. WALSH, Mary Carmel - With her daughter Pat, her son-in-law Dick Roberts (Mount Pearl), her only granddaughter, Andrea, Sarnia, Ont., and her son Gordon Walsh at her side, Mary Carmel Walsh peacefully slipped into eternity Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002 - the feast of All Souls at the palliative care unit, Dr. Leonard A. Miller Centre. Mary was predeceased by her husband Captain Gordon Walsh, Aug. 18, 1977; and her only grandson Paul Roberts, Feb. 15, 1991. Mary was born in Duricle on the Burin Peninsula on Oct. 22, 1917 to John and Catherine Doody. She was the sister of Irene, Philomena, Theresa, Dolph, Mike and Patrick, who have all gone to meet their Lord. She leaves to mourn her sister Madeline Dicks, St. John`s; sister-in-law Violet O`Keefe, Marystown; brother-in-law Joe Walsh, Staten Island, N.Y.; her cousin Adele Cheeseman; many special nieces, nephews and other relatives, friends and neighbours; and her friend St. Evangelista Bulger, who cared deeply about her. Mary`s life was filled with prayer, kind deeds and hospitality to everyone she met. She generously supported many organizations. She deeply loved the church and it was an abiding part of her life. For the past 39 years, she was a loyal and faithful member of the Basilica Parish in St. John`s. Caul`s Funeral Home at 84 LeMarchant Rd. has been entrusted with Mary`s wake and funeral. To give thanks to God for her good and faithful life, a celebration of the Eucharist and her funeral will take place at the Basilica of St. John`s the Baptist at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002. WOOD, John Neville - Passed peacefully into God`s eternal kingdom at St. Clare`s Mercy Hospital on November 25th, as a result of multiple medical difficulties, John Neville Wood, born to Hilda Rita Wood and John Frederick Wood in Manchester, England on June 5, 1924. Leaving to mourn, his much loved wife of 41 years, Barbara, sons and their families, Robert and Jacqueline (Riley) Gerald and Valerie (Justin & Janel), Paul and Leona, John and Linda (Michael & Corey), Mark and Sarah (Levi & Isaac). Sister Jeanne in Manchester England, special cousin Joyce in Manchester, England and a large circle of other relatives and friends in Canada and the UK. A WWII Veteran, he served as a Master Control Officer for the foreign office of the British Intelligence Department, Psychological Warfare Branch of the London, England office and was seconded to service in North Africa and Greece. He was the recipient of the Italy Star, the Defence Medal and the War Medal. He was a retired Technical Supervisor from CBC Television from February 1st, 1987. He was an Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus, he was a member St. Pauls Council #11776 and also a member of the Archbishop E.P. Roche Assembly Fourth Degree. At his request, there will be no visitation - body donated to Medical Science. There will a Mass of celebration of his life at St. Paul`s church on Newfoundland Drive on Wednesday, November 27th. at 10:30 a.m. Cremation at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to The Canadian Diabetes Association, The Heart & Stroke Foundation, The Arthritis Society, or a charity of one`s choice.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband Raymond; her two sons: Bruce (wife Brenda), Perry (wife Sharon); also her beloved grandchildren: Jessica, Jennel and Mitchell. Besides her parents, James and Bertha French, she is predeceased by her brother Jim French. Other family members include brothers: Bob, Billy, David and Warren French; sisters include: Eileen Noseworthy, Mildred Ebert and Linda Butler; sisters-in-law: Roma French, Mabel French, Cathy French, Carol Ann French, Beth Young and Audrey Smith; brothers-in-law: Dick Noseworthy, Fred Ebert, David Butler and Reg Young. Also a large circle of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She will be resting at Moores Funeral Home in Bay Roberts. Visitation, funeral and interment will be announced at a later date.
