Aylward, Paul Francis
Poet, Baker, Iron Worker & Confidant died Nov. 13, 2007
At various times Paul Francis Aylward was a baseball player, an iron worker, an executive, a baker, and a poet. But it wasn't what he did that inspired family and friends; it was how he did it. "He was a teacher, who taught us how to live by example," Robert Abbey of Riverside, R.I., said of his friend.
Mr. Aylward died of throat cancer Nov. 13 in Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He was 77 and lived in Wellesley. A big man, about 6 feet 4 inches tall, Mr. Aylward pitched for Red Sox and Dodgers minor league teams in his youth. "He could throw a mean breaking ball well into his 50s," said his son, Paul Jr. of Portland, Ore. Mr. Aylward was a senior vice president of the Marr Companies before retiring about 15 years ago. Friends remembered his inner calm and spirituality. "He was a towering man, but he was gentle and compassionate. He had an inner light and beauty and developed a very strong spiritual understanding of what life is about," Abbey said. It was an understanding that he shared. "His quiet wisdom was sought out by everyone. Friends, friends of friends, complete strangers, and of course, his loved ones," said his daughter Anne Fay of Sudbury.
The son of a fisherman who emigrated from Newfoundland, Mr. Aylward was born in Boston and sold peanuts in Fenway Park as a child. He served in the Army during the Korean War. "He was accepting of everything life gave him. And wrote wonderful poems," said another daughter, Paula of Marshall, Mich. "He wasn't just my father, he was my friend."
Friends and relatives also said he was a good listener. "The door to his home was always open. There was a constant flow of people. He brought peace and calm to people," Paula said.
In his retirement Mr. Aylward worked at Susu's Bakery Boutique in Wellesley, which is owned by another daughter. "He was good at it, too," Paula said. "He was there every morning at 4:30 a.m."
For the last several years, Mr. Aylward struggled with cancer, but he didn't let the battle get him down. "He referred to his cancer as an 'opportunity.' To someone who didn't know my father, this might sound like total lunacy, but to someone who knew him well, it makes all the sense in the world. I never once heard him complain about it, and I mean literally never," said his son. Mr. Aylward was not afraid to express his opinion. In January, after learning that a grandson's tour of duty in Iraq had been extended, he penned a letter to the editor that was printed in the Globe. "Years ago, I played many years in the Red Sox and Dodgers farm systems. Minor leagues then were called bush leagues, for players who were not good enough or ready enough for the big leagues," he wrote. "How clairvoyant that we could reach 50 years into the future for a president to name them after." Mr. Aylward also wrote poetry, which he collected in a self-published book titled "A Journey." His family shared an excerpt from one of his works:
"The span of life is often spent
Pursuing how to live
But pursuit is never needed
If we simply learn to give."
In addition to his son and daughters, he leaves his wife, Barbara; six other daughters, Kathy Kelly, Tisi Farrar, Joanie Kingsley, Susu, Renata Flynn, and Kristen; two stepchildren, Jason Freitas and Ilana Freitas; his former wife, Bernadette; nine siblings, Ethnea, Mary, Helen, Richard, James, Francis, William, Thomas, and Clare; and 10 grandchildren.

CARELESS, Tom– 93, died at home, in Rotherham, England, on November
1, 2007. He was born on December 10, 1913, in Rotherham, and was educated
at Wellgate School and Rotherham Grammar School. On leaving school, he
worked for John Brown Company at Roundwood Colliery in Rotherham, until
the outbreak of war in September, 1939. Tom signed up for the armed forces
the day after war was declared, and joined a REME unit just weeks before
his marriage to Janet (Jennie) Marshall at Rotherham, on November 18th,
1939, a union which was to last for 67 years, until Jennie's death
in 2006. He was a part of the British Expeditionary Force that travelled
to France in 1939, and he escaped the advancing German army at St. Nazaire,
France, in summer 1940, by finding passage back to England on a Polish
steamer. Reunited with his REME unit, he returned to Europe following
the D Day invasion, and had attained the rank of Warrant Officer (WO1),
and had the honour of being "Mentioned in Despatches" by
the time of his demobilisation from the army in 1945. After the war he
returned to the employ of John Brown Company at their Canklow Colliery
in Rotherham, and following the nationalisation of the coal industry,
worked for the National Coal Board in the wages office at both Aldwarke
and Silverwood pits. Restless and disillusioned with the coal industry,
he emigrated to Canada in 1957, moving to Bell Island, NL, where he resided
with his wife and son while working for DOSCO at their Wabana iron ore
mine, where he held the position of Assistant to the General Manager.
Upon closure of the mine in 1966, he was transferred to the Halifax Shipyards,
Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he worked for two years. During his time
in Halifax, he was an active member of the Vimy Branch of the Royal Canadian
Legion. He and Jennie moved back to Newfoundland in 1968, where, until
his retirement in 1979, he worked as an Administrator of Student Housing
at Memorial University in St. John's. Upon retirement, they returned
to England, initially settling in Harrogate, on the edge of the Yorkshire
Dales, before eventually relocating to Rotherham in 1992, thirty five
years after leaving the town for Canada. Tom was a lifelong motorcycle
enthusiast, and in his younger days was a member of the Rotherham Motor
Club, during which time he won several trophies and cups for racing and
hill climbing events. He was very proud of the fact that he obtained
a license to operate a motorcycle in Newfoundland at age 64. He was an
avid reader and gardener, and until the time of his death, he completed
the "Daily Telegraph" crossword every morning, either sat
at the top of his garden, or contemplating it through the conservatory
window. His garden was dominated by a large Canadian maple tree, the
only known one in the district, which he planted as a cutting when he
returned from Canada. He made many friends during his long life, and
received cards from around the globe at Christmas. He was a regular at
his Rotherham local, "The Homestead", and was often to be
found there enjoying a pub lunch and a pint, chatting with his friends
and watching the world go by, always with tattered crossword book close
to hand. He is survived by his son, David, Rotherham, grandchildren Erin
and Jon, both of Halifax, and a sister, Lillian Dudhill, Rotherham, Yorkshire.
Also fondly remembered and much missed by his sisters-in-law Barbara
Marshall and Gladys Sealey, Sheffield, England. In memory of Tom, plant
something in your garden and watch it grow.
