GARDINER, Sister Imelda - On November 26th,
2011, at the Monastery of the Precious Blood in Hamilton, Sister
Imelda Gardiner entered Eternal Life in the peace of the
Lord and the hope of Resurrection. Supported by her Sisters, she
left this world in the 80th year of her life and the 50th year of
her Religious Profession. Sister Imelda was born on Grey Islands,
NL on November 13th, 1932. Her father Francis Joseph Gardiner and
her mother, Lucy Ann Neville were both born on Grey Islands. There
were 11 children in the family; six daughters and five sons. Sister
Imelda was predeceased by her parents, Francis and Lucy, by two sisters:
Jane (Hurley) and Mary Susan, and by four brothers: Clarence, James,
Raymond and Reginald. She is survived by three sisters: Margaret
(Jones), Loretta and Pauline (Sharpe) and a brother, Richard, all
of Newfoundland. Sister is also survived by many nieces, nephews,
grandnieces and grandnephews. Two grandnephews, Darren Martell of
Waterloo, Ontario and Sean Martell of Stouffville, Ontario will represent
Sister Imelda's much loved Newfoundland family at her funeral.
Sister Imelda began her religious life in Newfoundland as a Sister
of the Congregation of Our Lady of Mercy where she made her First Profession
of Vows on July 16th, 1962. In this Community the Sisters consecrate
themselves to the service of the Poor, the Sick and the Uneducated.
Sister Imelda taught grade school for many years. In 1984 she felt
a new dimension of her religious commitment and began the process of
transferring from an apostolic religious community to a contemplative
community. Her desire to serve the poor, the sick, and the ignorant
did not change but its expression was changing. Sister Imelda put into
words what she understood in her heart as God's call to her now: my
Motto, my Prayer is "Through Him, with Him, in Him". My
Vocation is "to be a woman of prayer, at the heart of the
Church, in solitude for the multitude". During the last years
of her life, Sister suffered from very advanced Parkinson's Disease
which became a new dimension of her self-offering with the Lord and
for his people.

KEAN, Capt. John "Jack" Cull -
95, North Sydney. It is with great sadness we announce the passing
of our father Capt. John "Jack" Kean,
age 95, on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at Harbourview
Hospital in Sydney Mines, where he recently resided. Born in Pound
Cove, NL., on December 9, 1915, Jack was the eldest son of Captain
Llewellyn and Delilah Kean. He was a member of St. Matthew Wesley United
Church, North Sydney. He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years Audrey
(Hill) Kean in September 2007 and his brother James (Olive) in September
2006.
Jack spent over 55 years at sea, starting in 1929 at age 14, working
onboard various fishing schooners captained by his father during the
summer cod fishery off Labrador and as a sealer during the annual seal
hunt off the northeast coast of Newfoundland. During this time Jack
honed his seafaring skills and proceeded to obtain his watch keeping
and mate's tickets and in 1942 obtained his Master's Certificate. From
1939 until 1944, during the Second World War, he served in the Merchant
Marine as an officer on various ships. Over the next 36 years, Jack
captained many steam ships and motor vessels owned and operated by
the Newfoundland Railway, C.N.R., CN Marine and Marine Atlantic. These
ships provided a vital link to the out ports of Newfoundland and Labrador
and served as an extension of the Trans Canada Highway between North
Sydney and Port Aux Basques after Newfoundland joined Confederation.
The ships and vessels he captained during his career included the SS
Clyde, SS Clarenville, SS Glenwood, SS Baccalieu, SS Burgeo, SS Random,
SS Cabot Strait, MV Nonia, MV Patrick Morris, MV Leif Eriksson, MV
Marine Cruiser, MV William Carson (1966-1977) and the MV Ambrose
Shea (1977-1980). Upon his retirement in August 1980, he continued
to work another 4 years as an ice pilot in the Gulf of St. Lawrence
guiding ships to Montreal. In his younger years Jack was an avid sports
fisherman and hunter and enjoyed very much the outings that took place
around these activities, especially with his family and friends in
Newfoundland.
Prior to Newfoundland joining Canada in 1949, Jack was very active
in the Orange Lodge. He was also a past member of the Northern Yacht
Club in North Sydney. In retirement, Jack enjoyed reading Western fiction
novels, doing crossword puzzles, playing cribbage, 120's and 45's with
Audrey, family and friends, going out jigging for fish with his closest
friends, puttering around in the yard on Caledonia Street and cooking
up a scoff of traditional Newfoundland food. Known for spinning a good
yarn, Jack loved sitting down, having a few drinks with family and
friends to reminisce about the many experiences and people he encountered
during his 55 years at sea.
Left with fond and loving memories are his daughters Ruby (Boyd Parsons),
Long Island, with whom he resided the past 8 1∕2 years, Joan (Les Howie)
and his son John, both in Halifax, three grandchildren Andrew, Adrian
and Kathryn, one older sister Frances Winsor, St. John's, NL., and
two special nephews Mun and Bud in Wesleyville, NL., and also a large
circle of other relatives and friends.
He will be sorely missed by his family, many relatives and friends.
Special thanks to Dr. Paul Hickey, for care and concern shown to Jack
over the years, and also to Tena Williams, Mary Jackson and Bernadette
Finney and the nursing staff at Harbourview Hospital in Sydney Mines.
Visitation for Jack will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday in
the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Funeral
service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the W.J. Dooley Funeral
Home Chapel with Rev. David Luker officiating. Burial to follow in
Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Memorial donations may be made to

and his wife Sharon, Alban and his wife Judy and Leo and his partner

and cousins. Mourning her loss, as well, are her dedicated dining table
mates, neighbours, friends and the most wonderful staff at Admirals'
Coast and her many former neighbours and friends in Admirals Beach.
Betty and Frank moved into Admirals' Coast in 2008. She flourished
in her new place; with her new friends, her great social life and just "being
tended on". Always an avid "card shark",
it wasn't long before she had a table of great friends playing 120's
daily. She didn't always get the trumps, but she had a ball each and
every day. She never forgot those of lesser fortune and backed that
up by spending countless hours knitting mitts and socks to warm poor
souls each winter. She will be missed! At her request, cremation has
taken place. The family will be receiving friends at Queen of the Holy
Rosary Church in Admiral's Beach on Saturday, December 3 from 2:00
p.m. - 9:00 p.m., Sunday, December 4 from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. followed
at 2:30 p.m. by a mass in celebration of her life. Interment to follow.

would like that. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Dunphy's Funeral

guest book or to send a message of condolence.

POWER, Jenny - "The hand that rocks the
cradle is the hand that rules the world". W.R. Wallace
Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Hockey Mom, Sister, Aunt, Matriarch,
Perpetual Nurturer, Gardener, Seamstress, Guiding Light, Member of
the Catholic Women's League, Stalwart of the Catholic Church. George
Jones sang an epic country song about his Mother titled "She
Loved A Lot In Her Time" and for our Mother we feel George
Jones could not have said it any better. Mom was a perpetual nurturer
and lived a life devoted to her husband, seven children, nine grandchildren,
extended family and many friends. She incessantly nourished and encouraged.
Mom counselled us to believe in ourselves, teaching us to stand up
for things worth defending and to develop our full potential. Mom exemplified
compassion, making it easy for us to understand the importance of helping
others. Mom was ever vigilant in ensuring the safety and protection
of her family; surely no mother could claim to have done more to put
the interests of others ahead of her own. She demonstrated a life of
pragmatism and modesty - if resources were in short supply she would
gently counsel us to "make do" and assure us that
better days lay ahead. Raising seven ":special" children
with her husband Jack of 53 years and later doting on nine beloved
grandchildren was her passion; Mom delighted and revelled in the various
successes and accomplishments of her progeny.
Jenny Shea left her scenic and happy home in Fleur de Lys, White Bay
at the tender age of 17 to find her own way in the world. She took
the steamer to Lewisporte and made her way west, where her sister,
Betty, was working in the office at Riff's Department Store in Windsor.
Mom also secured a job at Riff's, in the Men's department. One day
a young, handsome, and dashing Jack Power appeared in front of this
vivacious young beauty and asked Mom to cash his pay cheque. Mom dutifully
passed the cash to our Dad and shortly thereafter noticed that Dad
had not endorsed the cheque. Mom, in a panic, asked someone to cover
her post and fled to the Windsor pool hall where Dad was holding court.
Flushed, Mom knocked on the door and asked Dad to please sign the cheque.
Dad agreed, on the condition that Mom join him at the Globe restaurant
for coconut cream pie and a glass of milk. Mom acquiesced; such began
a 55 year enduring and powerful romance.
Like many women of her generation, Mom delivered children in rapid
fire succession and was thrilled to do so: Garry arrived in December,
1958, Valerie followed 13 months later, Leo 16 months after Valerie,
Jackie 14 months after Leo, Tony 23 months after Jackie, Lori Ann 34
months after Tony, and Cory 45 months after Lori Ann.
At the age of 40, Mom had the foresight to encourage Dad to seek new
horizons for the family. Dad rose to the challenge, finding employment
in the Port Hardy Utah Copper Mine on Vancouver Island, British Columbia
where Mom's sister, Myrtle, and brother-in-law, Pat Dempsey, were working.
We all headed west to join Dad thereafter. We are eternally grateful
for this wonderful life experience which was instrumental in teaching
us about our wonderful country of Canada and its beautiful people.
Like her Mom before her, Mom stood up when she couldn't stand. From
her hospital bed, hours before she passed away, she was inquiring about
the health and well being of family and friends.
Mom was a fashionista. She loved to dress elegantly and possessed a
healthy dose of vanity. The day before she passed away, Mom told us
how happy she was with the care she was receiving from the staff, nurses,
and doctors of the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre and
of course we agree. Mom was particularly pleased with a young nurse
who told her how beautiful and young she looked at 72. Mom said "Even
if it is a lie, I'll take it".
Mom and Dad were music afficionados and loved to dance. In recent years,
Dad recorded three albums of their songs. Mom continued to unabashedly
proclaim her lifetime conviction that Dad was her favourite singer.
She loved Dad's rendition of "We Started Out Young" and
he loved singing it to her.
She was an avid gardener and cherished working the soil to extract
maximum colour and life. Mom also loved the outdoors and particularly
enjoyed the great Newfoundland tradition of blueberry picking in early
fall. She was also an accomplished seamstress. Feeding a large family
required considerable culinary skill and we all savoured her "million
dollar" raisin bread and Sunday dinners and the always sumptuous
Christmas dinner. The Christmas season was Mom's favourite time of
year - a holy time, a family time, a giving time.
Family was everything to Mom. Her mom and dad, Leo and Catherine Shea,
sisters, Betty, Von, Shirley, Myrtle, Cathy, and Stachie, brothers,
Bill, Jimmy, Leo, and Angus were loved, along with their spouses and
families. They were constants in her life. Her in-laws Clara, Ned,
Ann, Bride, Ray, Eileen, Pat, Tyrone, Maureen, Ed, Kay, Yvonne, Dennis,
Wayne, and Terry, together with their spouses and families, were also
deeply loved. We wish to thank Mom's true lifelong friends, Ruby, Joan,
Olive, Helen, Gert, Loretta, Carm, and Ethel who shared their faith,
child rearing, recipes, mutual love, and much more. Thank you to Mom's
health care providers, our extended family, and many friends for your
support and love. A sincere thank you to Father Houlahan, Father Hearn,
Father Morris, Father Brophy and Sister Connie, the CWL, and St. Joseph's
Parish.
Mom's great love affair with the Catholic Church was rooted in the
beliefs of a stalwart and she will find comfort in heaven, watching
us continue her beliefs and values. Lucid and engaged until her final
day on earth, Mom responded to her heavenly calling and passed away
with her family at her bedside, at peace with herself and God.
Mom, may you rest in peace. We love you.
