Marie was born in 1922 and grew up in Corner Brook, Nfld., a loving daughter and only child of Samuel and Annie (Russell) Hilliard. She helped manage her father's retail business before marrying WWII veteran, Charles Clouter in 1947 and raising a family of six children. On reentering the workforce, she spent many enjoyable years as a librarian at the Corner Brook Regional Library (Sir Richard Squires Building). Following retirement in 1984, she moved to Halifax to be near her two daughters. For the next twenty-five years, Mom lived her philosophy of 'lifelong learning' by travelling the world attending over fifty Elderhostel programs (www.roadscholar.org), from Bermuda to England, to Vancouver and Florida. She thoroughly enjoyed each new adventure and the many people she met from around the world and then she enjoyed reliving her adventures with stories over a cup of tea or at the dinner table. For many years she was actively involved in her new community as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, the VON Friendly Visitor program, Camp Hill Hospital, the Alzheimer's Society and Spencer House, where she particularly enjoyed participating in the "grandfriends" program with elementary students from nearby St. Mary's School. She was predeceased by beloved sons: Larry (Papua New Guinea, 1986), Bruce (Halifax, 2009), former husband, Charles Clouter (St. John's, 1990), and feline best friend, Dexter (September). Her loving family also includes six grandchildren - Stephanie Bennett Wells, Raechel Bennett Payne, Ann Whelan Solomon, Sean Whelan, Aaron and Devin Clouter; and, in the past sixteen years, seven beautiful great-grandchildren - Morrgan, Christian and Izaac Payne, Halifax; Derik and Martin Wells, Squamish, BC and Aidan and Ella Solomon, Victoria, BC. Mom lived an active, independent life until her move to Parkstone Enhanced Care nearly three years ago. The family would like to thank the staff and her friends on Garden Court for creating a community of companionship and care, and for the extra support and guidance provided to her daughters over the past two months. KIERANS, Thomas William - Peacefully passed away Friday, November 22, 2013 in his 101st year in St. John's NL. Tom was born in Montreal, PQ, on 13 February, 1913. His father Thomas Kierans had immigrated from Co. Monaghan, Ireland and his mother Margaret (McAran) Kierans was born in Montreal. He was a citizen of both Canada and Ireland. Tom is also predeceased by his sisters Mona (Ross Houston) and Mollie (Wm. Brown) and his brothers James (May and Yolande), Emmet (Doris), Martin (Ruby), Kevin (Pat) and Dairmuid. Predeceased by his former wife Mary and his son Harry (Silvana), Tom is lovingly remembered by his children: Sr. Mae Kierans of St John's, NL, Tom (MariJo) of Longueuil, PQ, Murray of Collingwood, ON, Brenda (Len) Wahlen of Coquitlam, BC, Michael (Dagmar) of Prague, Czech Republic, Teresa (Jim) Spurr of Coquitlam, Kathleen Walker of Maple Ridge, BC and Paul of Burnaby, BC. He is also fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Tim, Sonia, Patricia, Joseph, Jennifer, Mary, Jon Thomas, James, Henry, Andrew, Oliver, Willem, Christopher, Eireann and Siobhan, his 15 great grandchildren and his many nieces and nephews. While his devoted friends, Anne and Paul Macleod and Pat and Ken Mercer, were especially supportive to Tom in his later years, Tom will also be missed by many friends, neighbours and colleagues in St. John's and beyond. As a young man, Tom's keen longtime interest in water resources and mega projects was sparked while prospecting by bush aircraft and canoe across Canada's northland. After graduating in Engineering from McGill University in 1939, Tom moved to Sudbury, Ontario where he worked in the mines, smelters and refineries of the Sudbury Nickelbelt. Here he met and married Mary Mulligan and together they raised their large family. As the head safety engineer at INCO, Tom introduced many important safety reforms and innovations which significantly reduced casualties from mining accidents. Later, still based in Sudbury, he worked as a mining and water resources consulting engineer. In 1968, Tom returned to Montreal and worked with BRINCO to design and build the Churchill Falls underground hydro-electric power plant in Labrador.
In 1973, Tom moved to St. John's, NL to take a position on the engineering faculty of Memorial University where, in addition to teaching and mentoring future engineers, he continued to develop visionary engineering solutions to water and other natural resource problems including the GRAND Canal of North America, Strait of Belle Isle Fixed Link, Southside Hills development and Deltaport. Tom was keenly interested in engineering solutions to geophysical challenges at the local, provincial and continental level. His plans and projects had one common theme: whether in St. John's or beyond throughout Canada, North America or the whole world, we must learn to get along with each other and to share intelligently and generously the resources of this Good Earth. Tom was a life member of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canadian Society of Civil Engineers, the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and other professional groups. In his spare time, Tom was an avid golfer, sports-fan, reader and an occasional writer of poetry. He was able to live and work happily and independently in his home to age 100, thanks to the watchfulness and care of the neighbours on his street; his nurse practitioner Denise Cahill; his gardener Doug Stanley; his friendly chauffeurs at Coop Taxi; his personal salad maker, Brett Earls at Stadium Dominion; his housekeeper, Dorothy Short; Diane Sullivan, his financial consultant at the TD Bank; Marie Oakley, his longtime barber, Carleen Daly at China House Restaurant, and many, many others. You know who you are! We express sincere gratitude for the kind and expert care received in the HSC-ER, the HSC-3 South orthopedic staff, the Eastern Health ambulance services; the Miller Center 3 South staff and the Pastoral Care Staff at St. Clare's Hospital and the Miller Centre. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass and Celebration of Tom Kierans' life will take place at St. Pius X Church Monday, December 2 at 9:30 am followed by a reception in the parish hall. "In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice or to Memorial University of Newfoundland, with the memo line indicating "Thomas Kierans Memorial Engineering Scholarship Fund" and sent to the Office of Alumni Affairs and Development."
Thomas William Kierans fulfilled each day of his long and enthusiastically productive life, the motto he chose for his 1939 McGill University graduationyearbook photo: 'Nothing is so highly to be prized as the value of each day!' (Goethe)

WINTERS, Spencer Seymour - Spencer Seymour Winters of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 22, 2013 at the age of 86 years. Spencer was raised in Millertown, Newfoundland. He wed his beloved Evelyn, also a Newfoundlander, from Brookfield, Bonavista Bay, in 1951. They moved to New Brunswick and raised their four children in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia as Spencer worked for General Electric's large appliance division training sales people. In 1967 the family returned to St. John's, Newfoundland, where Spencer built a successful, highly respected industrial heating and ventilation supply business. He worked as a manufacturers' representative for companies such as Mark Hot and Volcano.
After retirement in 1988 Evelyn and Spencer sold their home and travelled North America in their motor home, settling first in Florida for a few years, Wasaga Beach, Ontario for eight years, finally coming to the Calgary area in 2002. Spencer loved family first, his kind encouraging conversations were an oasis of support for children, grandchildren, extended family and a large circle of friends. His humour was uplifting. His faith was paramount. He actively contributed to the United Church of Canada wherever he lived. In St. John's, at St. James United Church his hand drawn plans where used to extend the upper balcony seating area and he enhanced the pipe organ wall design. In Wasaga Beach, Spencer and Evelyn were founding members of the Wasaga Beach United Church and he served on the committees that actively pursued a location and the rebuild that lead to the existing church building today.
Spencer volunteered with the Kiwanis, especially the music festivals, as he loved music. He instilled that love in all his children. He sang and played guitar and piano. Spencer's many talents and interests included carpentry, cooking, sketching, painting, calligraphy, journaling, reading, photography, collecting coins and stamps, and researching both the Winters' and Blackwood's family trees. He also loved playing cards, making board games, and toys for the family, as well as watching his family's sports, graduations, and musical performances. He enjoyed camping, picnics and nature walks often including grandchildren while watching for wildlife. The birds, deer, and walks with Evelyn at the Boland farm in Hill Spring, Alberta, brought immense joy. Dad or "Pops/Poppy," will be greatly missed by his treasured family who wish to thank Dr. F. Oosman, the staff at Calgary Foothills Hospital and Bethany Care Center in Cochrane, for their compassionate care.
Besides his loving wife of 62 years, Evelyn (nee Blackwood), Spencer is remembered by his daughter Sandra and her son Joseph of Bradford, Ontario; Peter, wife Christine and daughters Laura and Mary of St. John's, Newfoundland; Brenda (Boland), husband Craig and daughters Cassandra and Breanna of Calgary, Alberta; Karen (Gregory), husband Hank and children Mikayla, Brennan, and Eric of Bowmanville, Ontario.
