COOPER, William (Bill), FGS
If you were looking at the moonlight on the Bay with all its diamond-like reflections the other night you may have missed that one of the sparkles winked out. That was Bill. He came into this world to the sound of the Halifax noon day gun one day in June 1956. He was born to mother Marlene Cooper and father William Fraser Cooper of Truro. Two years later along came sister Caroline Yvonne Cooper-Cole where she now resides in St Catherine's with husband Art, children Jennifer and Christopher and granddaughter Violet. A baby brother Steven Alexander was on the cards for a centennial project. He's now living in Dartmouth with his wife Susan.
Bill started SCUBA diving at the tender age of 13 after it was found he needed glasses and couldn't be an astronaut. By 16 he was teaching diving as well as playing saxophone in his spare time. He attended Dalhousie University where he met his wife Elizabeth (known as Buffy) from Newfoundland. They were married in September 1974. In 1979 he went to Newfoundland for a 2 week vacation and ended up staying for 4 years. He took the plunge and started his own consulting company. He would spend the next 5 summers working in the Western Arctic in the Beaufort Sea and during the shoulder seasons on the East coast either on the Grand Banks or out around Sable Island. He sang in the Senior and Men and Boys Choir of Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, as well as playing in the CLB Avalon Battalion Band. In late 1988 Buffy came home saying there was a notice on the bulletin board at Dalhousie looking for Nursing Instructors in Central Queensland in Australia for their new University based nursing program. He threw away the snow shovel and asked when we left. He found a job in the Physics Department doing research on earthquakes and teaching geology and geophysics. He got to see a fair chunk of the bush installing and maintaining a seismic network that covered an area the size of the UK. He got to do a lot of diving on the Great Barrier Reef. When the contract with the University ended, all our belongings were placed into a container marked London, England.
Buffy got a job teaching palliative care at a hospice in London while he stuck up his shingle again and soon had work with underwater fibre-optic cables. This took him from Norway to Japan with stops at most ports in between in either direction. After 5 years it was decided to come home and they temporally settled in Bedford. The cable companies still were willing to pay for the longer flights. This took him to Alaska, Japan, the Persian Gulf, and all over the Mediterranean. In 2003 he got winded cleaning up after Hurricane Juan came through the back yard. It turned out to be lymphoma and 6.5 liters of fluid had collapsed in his left lung. Once this was drained and the first round of chemotherapy was started he felt much better. He got back to work about a year later.
While in remission his healthy stem cells were extracted and frozen. They were needed in 2006 when he relapsed. A year of recuperation got him back to work. Work at sea to him was never a chore but was what he wanted to do. He never gave up the desire to fly or the interest in old war planes. The photo with this obituary is him in the back of a North American P 51 D Mustang, In 2014 he relapsed again but this time it took what little energy reserves he had left and in 2017 he was diagnosed with liver cancer. After 3 admissions to hospital there was no more active treatment. He spent his last days at home in relative comfort aided by the VON, Home Care and Nova Scotia Palliative Care. He leaves a large circle of relatives and friends in many corners of the world who will mourn his passing but find joy in having known him. He lived life on his terms and would encourage any who knew him to do the same. Funeral service will be held at 2p.m. on Thursday November 23, 2017 at the Cathedral Church of All Saints, Tower Road, Halifax, NS In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the C.L.B. Armoury Office, Regimental Band, P.O. Box 28126, St. John's, NL, A1B 4J8. Online condolences may be sent to donaldkwalker@accesswave.com

John's warmth was felt by all that knew him including his special friends in the St. Bond's Breakfast Club and the St. John's Philharmonic Choir.

ROE, David McGregor
December 19, 1960 - November 15, 2017
Dave Roe
, dad, brother, friend, author, programmer and artist, has died. He leaves his kids Niall Roe and Jean Roe and their mom, Jennifer Allford, his brother Ian Roe and family, many relatives and friends. Dave adored his kids and created his very own category of Dad Joke. Everyone in his life appreciated his sharp wit and keen observations of the world. While we are heartbroken to see him go, we are certain Dave is riding the Omega 8 bus toward Heaven U, an institution of higher learning that's "like a million Toronto airports slapped together" which he created in the CBC radio play Saul goes to University in Heaven. Writing award-winning radio plays was just one of Dave's many creative accomplishments. Over the course of his eclectic career he worked as a graphic designer, fine art print maker, internet pioneer (the eCard!) and programmer of collaborative computer systems. As the Omega 8 bus driver tells Saul, "People, whether they're alive or dead, they've got to have something to do." We suspect Dave took his long to-do list with him. He was a very talented and entertaining writer. At the time of his death he was working on a sequel to Troubles in the Colony, a novel he self-published earlier this year. In it he writes: "We live. We see and make changes. We die. But parts of us live on. Our children live on. People who carry our light live on. The changes we made are enhanced by others. The conversations we start are continued." There will be a gathering to swap favourite Dave stories in St. John's in early 2018. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the charity of your choice, invite your friends over for a poker game or make someone laugh. The family would like to send a special thank you and a giant hug to Greg Dawson.

ROY, Ruth
Passed on: November 11th, 2017

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that the friends of Ruth Roy announce her sudden passing, on Saturday November 11, 2017. Ruth was born is Quebec to Monique Guerrette and Doria Roy in a year she chose not to disclose. She came to Newfoundland to attend MUN where she received a degree in both Arts and Education. MUN was a place near and dear to Ruth's heart. She spent many hours expanding her learning and education long after graduation. Ruth will be lovingly remembered in Newfoundland by her best friends Madonna McGrath and Madonna's daughter Maggie, and Marianna Hernandez. Countless staff and students at Memorial University she befriended over the years grieve her loss, particularly international students, and those from Labrador. Her positive and loving impact in that ever-green group of young men and women was infinite. She will also be missed by numerous adult learners whom she taught her beloved French language as well as those in the French speaking community. Ruth did everything with love and has a strong faith in God. She gave more than she has. She saw goodness and offered kindness. She possessed an innate curiosity for life that connected her with people. She died doing what she loved, exploring her Newfoundland. A service in memory of Ruth will be held on Sunday, December 3, 2017 at 3 pm at the Faith Bible Chapel, 43 Kenmount Road and also on December 3, 2017 at 2 pm at Ecole des Grands-Vents, 65 Ridge Road. She laid to rest in a family plot in Quebec next to her mother. To honour her generosity, those who so desire may bring a food item for the Food Bank at MUN or make a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Newfoundland.
Le monde est un meilleur endroit parce que tu etais dedans.
