Passed peacefully away at the Carbonear General Hospital on Saturday, October 28th, 2000, Edward Lester Goodyear Abbott (better known as Ted) of Cupids, aged 77 years. Leaving to mourn his wife of 42 years, Enid, daughter Norma Bonnell, sister Kate (Kay) Nunley, Canyon Lake, Texas; special little friend Samantha Rose; nieces and nephews and a large circle of friends. Resting at Broughton's Funeral Home, Brigus, until 12 noon on Thursday. Funeral to follow at 2 P.M., from the United Church and Cemetery, Cupids. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Bible Society.

Leaving to mourn his loving and devoted wife of 49 years, Betty (nee Morry); his children; Alex of Edmonton, Alberta, Debbie (John) Cadigan, Pam (Dave) Burry of Surrey, B.C., Jamie, Greg, Rod, Scott (Sandy); his grandchildren; John Jr. (Lynn) Cadigan of Ottawa, Ontario, Sean Cadigan, Leah Burry of Surrey, B.C., Eilish Aitken; and great-grandchild Erin Cadigan of Ottawa, Ontario; his brothers; Bill and Roy; and sister Violet (Thorne); and a large number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. ANDREWS, Rex Sinclair - Passed peacefully away after a short illness, in the presence of his loving family, and with great dignity, on Monday, October 16, 2000 at the rising of the sun, at St. Clare`s Mercy Hospital, Rex Sinclair Andrews in his 92nd year, formerly of Upper Gullies. Rex was predeceased by his infant son Neil in 1938, his dear wife Gladys in 1980, his brother Frank in 1998, his son-in-law Clarence Whitten in 1990, and great-grandson Philip Hiscock in 1992. He leaves to celebrate his long life, Daughters Phyllis Forward (Kenneth) at Mt. Pearl, Lorraine Lambert (Chesley) at Paradise, June Hawkins at Ontario, and Carol Rodgers (Martin) at Nova Scotia, 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 6 great great-grandchildren. Sisters-in-law Isabelle Andrews at Ontario, Bell Garland at St. John`s, Clare Scott at St. Phillips, and Mary Ellis at Ontario, good friend Tom Tipple as well as many other relatives and friends too numerous to mention. Resting at Barrett`s Funeral Home, 1081 Topsail Road, Mt. Pearl, Nfld. From 7 p.m. -10 p.m. Monday, 10 a.m. -12 noon, 2-4 p.m. and 7-10 p.m. Tuesday, 10 a.m. - 12 noon Wednesday. Passed peacefully away at Lakeside Nursing Home, Gander on October 24th, 2000, Mrs. Effie Arnold, age 88 years, of Traytown, Newfoundland. Leaving to mourn sons; Roy (Lorraine), Ross (Patricia) and James (Sharon); five grandchildren; Wayne (Una), Linda, Jill, Dustin and James; four great-grandchildren; Adam, Trent, Tristan and Talisha; sister, Edna Coles and brother, John Way; and also a number of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral Service was held 2 P.M. on Friday, October 27th, at the Traytown United Church, with Rev. Paul Vardy officiating. Passed peacefully away at Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville, on Sunday, October 15th, 2000, Dr. Peter Ian Atkinson of Clarenville, aged 81 years. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife Kay of 32 years; daughter Jean Bernath (Mike), Brampton, ON; son Ian (Donna), St. John's; grandson Jason; sister-in-law Cecily Drodge (Charlie); mother-in-law Marjorie Hodder, Clarenville and a number of relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at a date to be decided.

Passed peacefully away in the Orlando Medical Centre, Orlando, Florida, Nancy Auston-Moore, age 60, daughter of the late James and Esther Herder. Leaving to mourn devoted husband Joseph Moore; one daughter Christie Auston, St. Louis, MD; one son David Auston, Summit, NJ; two sisters; Judy Woodford (Tom), St. John's, Barbara Corrigan (Tom), LaConner, WA; one brother Jim (Gail), Aurora, ON; as well as many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. Private interment at a later date in St. John's, Newfoundland. Donations gratefully accepted for Breast Cancer Research.

Baldwin, Aretha Mae (nee Rose)
Holliston, MA., 84
November 30th, 1915 - October 12th, 2000

She was born in Biscayne Cove, Cape St. Frances, Newfoundland, Canada. She was the daughter of the late Emma Butt and Walter Rose. She was the third of nine children and was predeceased by Sarah, Jane, Ambrose, John and Clarence, all of Newfoundland. She leaves two brothers; Leonard Rose of Everett, MA, and Arthur Rose of Manuels, Newfoundland; and a sister Laura Phyllis Critch of Revere, MA. She leaves her husband of 58 years, Harold Baldwin of Holliston, MA, and two children; Linda Giarla of Holliston and Wayne Baldwin of Essex, MA. She also leaves five grandchildren; David Giarla of Natick, MA, Robyn Giannozzi of Mendon, Scott Giarla of Jamaica Plain, MA, Erika Baldwin of Essex, MA, and Connor Baldwin of Essex, MA. She also leaves three great-grandchildren; Jeremey Power of Natick, MA, Alessia and Marco Giannozzi of Mendon, MA, and a new little great-grandchild due on Valentine's Day.
Mae, as family and friends called her, came to the United States from Newfoundland in 1938. She married Harold in 1942 and lived in Lynn, MA., for 33 years. She was a member of the Easter Star and attended St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Lynn, MA. She was busy raising her family and active in all of St. Stephen's functions. She also worked at Wood Electric in Wakefield, MA for 15 years. In 1975 Mae and Harold moved to the Mainlands in Pinellas Park, Florida where they lived for 22 years. Mae was a member of the United Methodist Church there and active in Unit 3 Clubhouse of the Mainlands. In 1997 she moved back to Massachusetts, where she lived at Mission Springs Elderly Housing in Holliston and is a devoted member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church, Holliston, MA.. In 1998 Mae was diagnosed with ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease and fought a hard, brave battle with the disease. He spent the last 4 months at Mary Ann Morse Nursing Home in Natick, and she was happy to go home to God. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, October 16th, 2000 at 11 am at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, Highland Street, Holliston. The Rev. Christine Witticker will officiate. Cremation will follow. Calling hours at the Chesmore Funeral Home, 854 Washington Street, Route 16, Holliston, will be Sunday from 2-6 pm.. Donations in Mrs. Baldwin's memory may be made to the Metro West Hospice, 85 Lincoln Street, Framingham, MA, 01702 or ALS Association, 7 Lincoln Street, Wakefield, MA, 01880.

Passed peacefully away at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital on October 17th, 2000, Lily Louise Baldwin in her 62nd year. Predeceased by her parents Jasper and Eva Baldwin and brother Carl Baldwin. Leaving to mourn two brothers; Alfred (Elizabeth) and Max (Hazel), St. John's; sister Jean (Horatio) Sullivan, ON; three nephews; Keith Baldwin (Kerry), Alberta, Mark (Ann Marie), St. John's, Trevor (Lori), Alberta; two nieces; Sylvia Tobin (Paul), Donna Bradley (Jim); and two special great-nephews; Nicholas Tobin and Brendan Bradley, all of St. John's; also her family at Morgan's Personal Care Home, Upper Gullies; other relatives and friends. Ball, Robert Daniel
Passed away suddenly on Thursday, October 12th, 2000, at his home, Robert Daniel Ball, aged 57 years. Leaving to mourn his living wife Mary (Maise) (nee Benoit); three sons; Robert, ON., Norman, Dennis (Kim); three daughters; Serina, Tammy (Albert) and Wanda, NS; mother Laura; two brothers; David (Denise), NS, Michael; one sister Heather; seven grandchildren and a large circle of family and friends. Cremation has already taken place. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. There will a small memorial on Sunday, October 15th, 2000 at this home, 22 Jubilee Place from 2-4 pm. All are welcome.

Passed peacefully away at Chancellor Park on October 18th, 2000, age 95. Predeceased by her husband, Senator M.G. Basha and daughter Yvonne Belanger. Survived by her son Michael (Mary) and daughter Joan (Brian); seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. At the request of the family, a private service will be held and interment to take place in Ottawa.

Left with fond and loving memories; daughter Ethel (Mrs. Winston Vaters)of Pasadena, Nfld; sons; Maxwell (Florence) of Lantzville, BC; Rendell of Swift Current, Nfld; Gerald (Flo) of Swift Current, Nfld; brothers; Rudolph Barrington of St. John's, Nfld, Bryan Barrington of Buchans, Nfld; Donald Barrington (Joyce) of Swift Current, Nfld; Howard Barrington (Ruby) of Black River, Nfld; 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and a large number of relatives and friends. Leaving to mourn her children; Judy (James Murphy), Sharon (Wayne Squires), Ron (Sharon), Susan (Randy Dean), Joan Marie (David Franstone); sisters and brothers; Joan Ryan (Jerry), Barbara Connolly (Dave), Wallace Lythgoe and David Lythgoe (Marilyn); 8 grandchildren; Dick, Rodney, Nicole, Shane, Kevin, Ryan, Courtney and Stephen; special nieces and nephews; Jennifer and Sherry Anne Lythgoe, Greg and Jeff Connolly; many special friends and relatives; especially all of her close friends on McKay Street and the Denine family. George was a long time member of the LOL Star of Bethlehem Lodge # 181, Foxtrap. Predeceased by his parents, James and Emily Benson. Left to mourn three sons; George (Ann Marie), Gary (Pamela) and Darryl (Arlene); one daughter Cathy (Gerald); seven grandchildren; Stephen and Janice, James and Amanda, Emily, Sarah and Michael; and his faithful dog Ben; sisters; Mary (Gerald Parsons) and Joan (Graham Butt); mother-in-law; Louise Thorne; grandmother-in-law Emma Newhook; sister-in-law; Loretta Pittman; brothers-in-law; Kevin Thorne and family, Clarence Thorne and family, Derek Thorne and family, Lloyd Thorne and family; also many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and a large circle of friends. Passed away suddenly on Monday, October 9th, 2000, Frederick Michael (Mickey) Best, aged 78 years, A World War 11 Veteran. Fred is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Betty), (nee Stevenson); sons; Hubert and wife Marilyn (Taylor) with Amanda and Jessica; Fred and wife Cathy (Mallard) with Andrew, Connie and Freddy; Clarence and wife Wavey (Elms) with Sharissa; daughter; Wanda and husband Charlie Doyle with Rodney, Carrie and Morris. Fred has one surviving brother Frank and wife Bessie in Hamilton, Ontario; sister-in-law; Bridgette and husband Edward Perry in Rhode Island, USA. Long time family friends Maureen Porter and Rowena Bennett. Also, Nicole Best in Calgary, Alberta and a large number of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Passed away peacefully at her daughter's home following a courageous battle with lung cancer on Monday, October 30th, 2000, age 65 years. She was taken back into the arms of our Lord and left those who knew her with fond and loving memories, Leaving behind to mourn husband Eugene Bishop; sons; Eugene (Dianne), Witless Bay; Donald (Cindy), Virginia, USA; daughters; Patricia (Gordon) Harper, Salisbury, NB; Linda (Chris) MacPherson, Red Deer, AB; Debbie (Kevin) Barrett; 17 grandchildren; 3 great-grandsons. Also leaving to mourn one brother John (Edna) Maddicks; two sisters; Theresa (Fred) Bush and Peg (Dick) Costigan; as well as many other family and friends. Passed peacefully away at the Masonic Park Nursing Home, on Saturday, October 21st, 2000, Albert George Blackwood. Aged 87 years. Predeceased by his daughter Bernice Thistle 1999, grandson Terry Blackwood 1989 and infant son Eric. Leaving to mourn his loving and devoted wife of 62 years Nina (nee Davis); three sons Don (Sandra) of St. John's, Guy of Ottawa, ON, and Harold of Sault Ste. Marie, ON; four daughters Geraldine of Mount Pearl, Doreen (Jim) Acton of Calgary, AB., Jeannette of St. John's, and Joanne (Wally) Driscoll of Chamberlains; son-in-law Allan Thistle of Tors Cove; 16 grandchildren: Jeff, Scott, Paul, Craig, Carolyn, Tracy, Catherine, Jodi, Paul, Aaron, Mark, Adam, Andrew, Hilary, Stephen and Sarah; two great-granddaughters Melissa and Rebecca; one brother Dr. John (Norma) of St. John's; two sisters Elvie (Glen) Burke of Glovertown and Florence (Carmen) Taylor of Woodstock, ON; as well as many other relatives and friends, including his many friends and caregivers at Masonic Park Nursing Home. BOWN, Charles Joseph - 37- Passed away at the Health Sciences Center, St. John`s, Newfoundland on Tuesday, October 24, 2000. He died surrounded by loving family, following a truly courageous battle with Lymph Cancer. Charles, born on Bell Island, developed a career in Performance Music, Music Education, Information Technology and Call Center Management. He has lived in Newfoundland, Ontario, PEI and Nova Scotia. He will be remembered for all the lives he has touched through Music Education, Church Music and Christian love. He will be forever loved and deeply missed by his loving wife Elizabeth (Hochster); his parents Evelyn (Dyer) and Charles G. Bown; his brother Harry Bown (Anne); and sisters: Barbara White (John) and Rosemary O`Keefe (David). He is survived by his nine nieces and nephews: Christopher White Jonathan White, Alison White, Michael White, Andrew Bown, Matthew Bown, Jennifer O`Keefe, John O`Keefe and Colin O`Keefe. He is predeceased by his sister Christine Bown, 1989. He will be deeply missed by his mother-in-law Marilyn Hochster, Cynthia, Julian and Alexander Dent. He will be resting at the Pendergast Funeral Home, Bell Island, on Thursday, October 26 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Michael`s Church on Friday, October 27 at 2:30 p.m. Interment will follow at the St. Michael`s Parish Cemetery. A reception will be held at St. Michael`s Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Memorial University Charles Bown Music Scholarship. Donations may be sent to Alumni Services, Memorial University, St. John`s, NF, A1C 5S7. Charlie will always be remembered as a man of love, positivity and peace. In her earlier years, Dorothy was active with the YWCA and the IODE, and was a long time member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, St. John's and First Presbyterian Church, Edmonton, Alberta. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, October 16th, 2000 at 11 am at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Hamilton, Ontario. Passed peacefully into God's eternal care on October 7th, 2000, Margaret Mary Whelan (nee Lewis) of Conception Harbour. Predeceased by her parents John Lewis and Anna (Lewis) Fleming and by her sister Lorraine Whelan. Left to mourn her passing are her husband Albert; daughter Rosemarie; son-in-law; Jim, two granddaughters; Margaret and Victoria; brothers; Bob (Marianne) Lewis, John (Marion) Lewis and sisters; Jean (Ted) Hall and Gerri (Maurice) Power. Also greatly saddened by her passing are nephews; Tony. Shawn and Michael Power, special family member Jim Fleming, cherished friends Rose, Leslie, Deirdre Phillips and Edna McGrath; as well as numerous other relatives and friends. Resting at Conway's Funeral Home, Conception Harbour, with visitation from 6-10 pm on Sunday and 12 noon -10 pm on Monday. Date and time of burial to be announced.

Dear grandson of Bruce White, Lois Smagata, and Jeanette Winker. Loving great-grandson of John (Jack) and Anne Windsor. Predeceased by his grandfather Geoffrey Murrins. Born in Niagara Falls on August 30th, 1983, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and hockey. He was a Grade 12 student at Westlane Secondary School. Friends may call the Williams Funeral Home, 722 Ridge Road North, Ridgeway from 7-9 P.M. Wednesday and from 2-4 P.M. and 7-9 P.M. Thursday. Funeral Service in St. George's Catholic Church Friday morning at 11 A.M.. Interment Bertie Church Cemetery. Memorial donations would be appreciated to Sick Children's Hospital or Tender Wishes.

Passed away peacefully, age 85 years, at the Miller Centre, October 23rd, 2000. Predeceased by wife Edith M. White (1997), daughter Mary N. Smith (1985) and grandson Jay M. Harty (2000). He will be sadly missed by ten children; Lorraine and Jack Dooley, Gander; Nancy and Paul McKenzie, Toronto, Rosemary and Lloyd Cumby, Portugal Cove, Fred and Elise White, Long Cove, Ann and Martin Harty, Goulds, David and Lorraine White, Long Cove, Marjorie and Bill Brown, Long Harbour, Cathy and Gordie Mahon, Logy Bay, Trudy and Harvey Newhook, Alliston, ON, Bonnie and Bill Oakley, St. John's; also a large circle of grandchildren and great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends. Laying to rest at the Good Shepherd Church, Norman's Cove. Funeral Service will be held Thursday, October 26th, 2000 at 2 P.M.. Passed peacefully away at the Leonard A. Miller Centre on October 31st, 2000, Dorothy Whittick, aged 84 years. Predeceased by her husband Harry. Left with fond memories Alan and Judith; her grandchildren; Rachel and Christopher; her special friends; Rosemary, Gwen and Lily; also a large circle of friends she met through her work with the Seniors Resource Centre. Dorothy wished for a private cremation without service followed by interment with her late husband in Burnley, U.K.. An association which gave her much pleasure and fulfillment over the eleven years she lived in Newfoundland.
