CANT, Leila Christine - Dec. 10, 1911 (Brighton, England) - Oct. 19, 2003 (White Rock, B.C.) The circle of life is complete for Mom. She had a wonderful life and, at 91, she had a spirit which never diminished although her body eventually failed. She passed away in the warm and loving atmosphere of home, comforted and enveloped by her family. In 1939, after nursing and midwifery training, Mom`s adventurous spirit led her from home in Brighton, England to a position in the outpost nursing stations at Cow Head and Rose Blanche, in the colony of Newfoundland. A meeting with Dr. Donald Cant in Stephenville led to romance and marriage. He, had completed medical training in Yorkshire and independently ventured overseas to become Medical Officer on the "Lady Anderson", a hospital ship providing medical care to the isolated communities of the South Coast of Newfoundland. They married in 1942 in Halifax. During the war, Mom returned to England where first son John was born there while, Don served with the Canadian forces in Europe. With the return of peace, they returned to Newfoundland. The family grew with Jim born in Harbour Breton, then twins, Jennifer and Elizabeth, and finally Daphne all born in Corner Brook. Throughout the years, Mom devoted herself to her family, as well as to the community with hospital auxiliary and other volunteer work. Mom freely accepted criticism of her bread making skills but she was the queen of roast beef and Yorkshire pudding! Mom had an optimistic and positive nature- with a sherry glass never "half empty", but always "half full". Even after losing Don in 1996 and suffering the decline of old age, she vigorously maintained as much independence and contribution to the family as she possibly could. Mom always said she was lucky to have such a loving family, but we all know it was her warmth, selflessness and example that made it so. She has been the family matriarch, the hub around which we all have gathered for so long. It has been a sad goodbye, but she has left us a legacy of close-knit and supportive family bonds, and high standards that we will strive to maintain. A memorial event will be held at 12967 21 A Ave. in Surrey, BC on Nov. 23, 2003 from 2 to 5 p.m.

MERCER, Marshall Victor James (Lynch) 2002 - 2003- Marshall Victor James Mercer (Mr. Man), beloved son of Brandi Lynch and Victor Mercer of Calgary, passed away peacefully at home while he slept on October 12, 2003 at the age of 20 months. On January 30, 2002 our lives were forever brightened when our precious Marshall was born. He touched so many in his short time here with his adorable smile, infectious giggle and funny faces. He adored his big sister Mackenzie and loved to chase his kitty all over. From day one, Marshall had an intense love for food, always carrying around a package of Teddy Grahams wherever he went. Sadly, on June 13, 2003, at the age of 16 months, Marshall suffered a tragic near-drowning accident at home. He was not given much hope but his strength and determination pulled him through, much to the amazement of many. When he finally returned home, Marshall seemed more relaxed and at peace than he had in four months. It was this peace and comfort in being at home that allowed Marshall to finally have a good sleep. Although he is now gone, he will be in our hearts forever and we take solace in the fact that he is our Guardian Angel, now watching over us and keeping his big sister safe. We love you, Mr. Baby, and will think of you every minute of every day. Thank you to all who have prayed for Marshall and the family, and to all those who helped us to get the treatments. Besides his loving Mom and Dad and big sister Mackenzie, Marshall is survived by Grampa Jim, Gramma Marg and Grampa Dave, Gramma Lola, Gramma Betty and Grampa Victor, Nan, Pop, Auntie Shari and Uncle Don, Aunties Crystal and Melanie, and numerous other cousins, great aunts and uncles, and many family friends. A Celebration of Marshall`s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY`S, Eastside Memorial Chapel (5388 Memorial Drive N.E., Calgary, AB,) on Thursday, October 16, 2003 at 2:30 P.M. with the Rev.
