BABSTOCK, Gertrude (Gertie) - Passed away suddenly, but peacefully, in Eastport, on October 24th 2011, Gertrude (Gertie) Babstock (nee Powell), age 91 years 6 months. Predeceased by her husband Dawson in 1989, her parents Albert & Rachel Powell, five brothers and two sisters. Left with heavy hearts and precious memories daughter Winnie Warren (Jim) and son Albert Babstock (Gloria); granddaughters: Lisa Penny (Garry) and Tina Watts (Tom); grandsons: Michael Babstock (Cathie) and Mark Babstock and great-granddaughter Lauren Babstock, as well as a large circle of relatives and friends. Funeral took place on October 27th at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Happy Adventure with interment at the United Church Cemetery, Happy Adventure. Predeceased by her husband Gordon Baird (2002). BAMBRICK, John Patrick - age 51 years, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital on Friday, October 28th, 2011. BARRY, Thomas Patrick - December 12, 1931 - October 19, 2011. It is with sadness that the families of the late Thomas Patrick Barry announce his passing at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre, aged 79. Thomas is predeceased by his parents Patrick and Mary, brothers Maurice, Andrew, and Raymond. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife, Lucy; sons: Glenn (Jeannie) of St. John's NL, André (Joan) of Musgrave Harbour, NL; grandchildren: Christa of Calgary, AB and Justine of St. John's NL; brothers: Francis (Ruby), Bill, Lawrence (Cathy), and Joseph (Glenys); sisters: Louise Moyles, and Kathleen (Bill) Saunders, as well as a number of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place. The funeral service took place Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 11 am from St. Joseph's Parish, Grand Falls-Windsor, NL with Father William Houlahan officiating. BATES, Nathan Edmund - Passed peacefully away on October 22, 2011 at the Health Sciences Centre. Nathan Edmund Bates aged 70 years. Nathan was the only child of the late John and Gladys Bates. Leaving to mourn his devoted wife Greta; sons: John and wife Alexandra ( Fekete), Robert and wife Kelly (Howse); Three loving grandchildren: Claire Elizabeth Bates, Edmund Anthony Bates and Arlo John Bates. Nathan was loved and embraced by a wide circle of extended family, in particular his brothers in law, sisters in law, nieces, nephews and cousins, special aunts Katherine Yetman and Natica Satterthwaite, and friends too numerous to mention. BENMORE, Robert Maxwell Jr. (Robbie) - Passed away at the Health Science Complex on October 29th, 2011, Robert Maxwell Benmore Jr. Age 58 years. Predeceased by his father Robert Maxwell Sr. 2005. BROPHY, T. Charles - December 22, 1924 - October 2, 2011. It is with profound sadness that the family of the late Charlie Brophy (formerly of Fermeuse) announce his passing at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital surrounded by his loving family in his 87th year. Predeceased by his children, Pearl, Mark and Margaret, his parents Thomas and Elizabeth, his sisters Annie, Theresa and Anne, brothers Patrick, Edward, Kevin and Tony, sisters-in-law, Clara and Georgina and brother-in-law, George Walsh. Leaving to mourn, his wife of 56 years and the love of his life, Catherine (Quinlan), his children Gerard (Donna), Edmund, Karen (David Baker), Charlene (Edmund Slaney), Brian (Joanne), and Tom (Daisy), his grandchildren Scott (Andrea) and Kayla Brophy and Christopher Crockwell, Krista, Jillian, Meaghan, Ryan and Patrick Slaney, Mark, Laura and Kate Brophy and Madison and Hailey Brophy; brother James and sister Marcella Walsh, sisters-in-law Mary (in Boston), Rita and Mary (in Fermeuse). BUTT, Robert Charles (Bob) - Passed peacefully away in the presence of his loving family at the Health Sciences Centre on Friday, October 21, 2011, Robert Charles Butt, aged 84 years. Predeceased by parents, Anna Louise and William Butt, sisters Daphne Hopkins and Cynthia White and precious grandson, Joshua Janes. Leaving to mourn with loving memories his dear wife and best friend, Shirley (nee Badcock) (Escasoni); sisters: Joyce Adams and Louise Rowe; his children: Heather Pittman (Robert), Judy Smith (Dave), Susan Janes (Derm) and Robert Butt Jr. (Janice); ten grandchildren: Heidi Story (Shawn), Matthew Pittman (Laurie), Russell Pittman, Janice Smith, Stephen Smith (Lori-Ann), Derm Janes Jr., Laura Janes, Alain Butt, Julie Butt and Michael McKay (Adrian); four great-grandchildren: Abigail Smith, Paige Pittman, Jessica Rice and Taylor McKay. BYRD (nee Rose), Carol Ann - Passed away suddenly on October 27, 2011 at her home in St.John's following a courageous battle with cancer, Carol Byrd (nee Rose). She leaves to mourn her husband Jim; her son Michael of St. John's; and her eldest son Jim, Toronto, and his wife Carol Bagozzi and their two children Kaitlyn and Josh, the pride and joy of Grandma's life. Carol also leaves to mourn her two beloved sisters, Bernice (St. John's) and Ramona (Prince George, BC) and their husbands Jack Devereaux and Dale Seip. Also mourning Carol's passing are her sisters and brothers-in-law: Andy (Brenda) Byrd, Mary Neville (Dick, deceased), Bill Byrd (Robert Milkovich), Pauline (Tim) Howlett, Cathy Byrd and Pat Byrd; as well as her nieces and nephews, none of whom were ever far from her heart - Danielle (Chris) and John Devereaux (Kim), Caroline and Adam Seip, Susan Oton (Mfon) and Alison Byrd (Billy), Catherine Neville and Meghan and Andrew Howlett. Carol will also be sorely missed by her special sisters - the "Club Girls", and her dear friends from her Art Group and Book Club Group as well as her extended circle of friends and family in Toronto, Mississauga, Ottawa and Halifax/Dartmouth. She will be especially missed by her longtime friends Janet and Pat Hearn and Marilyn Corbett. Carol was pre-deceased by her father and mother, Jack and Laura Rose, her father and mother-in-law, Andy and Pauline Byrd, her brother-in-law Michael Byrd and her infant brother Walter Rose. The family would like to thank the doctors and the nursing staff at The Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Centre, in particular Doctors Dawson and Martin, for the care they provided to Carol during her courageous battle with cancer. CLEARY, Andrew Joseph - (1930-2011) - Korean War Veteran. Passed peacefully away after a lengthy illness, Andrew Joseph Cleary, aged 81 years on October 28, 2011, at Caribou Memorial Veterans Pavillion. Andrew was born in Argentia and lived in Placentia Bay most of his life. He was pre-deceased by his wife Rose Marie (Ryan) in 2009 and daughter Geraldine O'Leary in 2010. He is survived by children, Rick, Jerome, Ellen, Jim, Frank, Rose and Larry and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Memorial Service will take place at Maher's Funeral Home, Placentia on Tuesday, October 1, 2011 at 2pm. Private inurnment will take place at a later date. COADY, Clarissa Mary - Passed peacefully away at St. Patrick's Mercy Home on October 27th, 2011, age 99 years, formerly of Burin. She leaves to mourn one sister-in-law Marian Manning of Burin; nephews Robert Coady (Helena Gough), Aidan Murphy (Glenda), Bryan Murphy; nieces Maura Murphy, Mary Cremin (Denis), Rita House (Reg). She will be missed by her many friends at Kenny's Park Apartments, Mary Queen of Peace Parish and St. Patrick's Mercy Home. Resting at Caul's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road. Aunt Clarissa felt "God's presence" whenever she attended daily Mass and got great comfort from Fr. John Maddigan's words and from his visit and blessing in her final Hour.

COSTELLO, Christopher - Passed away suddenly at his residence in Shoal Harbour, Christopher Gregory Costello, age 56, retired employee of Clarenville Newfoundland Power. Chris was predeceased by his parents Gregory and Muriel Costello (nee Oldford). Leaving to mourn with the best of memories are his wife and best friend Margaret, and the light of his life, daughter Zoe. DALTON, Michael Edward - 1949-2011. Passed peacefully away at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital, surrounded by his loving family on Oct. 7, 2011 after a long struggle with liver disease. Raised in Conception Hr. then went to New York City when he was 19 yrs. old, where he settled down and raised a family. He was a proud member of Ironworkers 580 where he helped to build many of New York's towering sky scrapers including the World Trade Centre. He loved playing hockey and baseball. He belonged to Twin Rivers Rifle and Pistol Club East Branch New York where he and his son Michael would go deer hunting every season and when he came to Conception Harbour he loved to go fishing. He also became a proud member of St. Anne's Council # 2429 Knights of Columbus in New York. Predeceased by his parents Annie and George, brothers George and Kenneth and brother-in-law Norman Kennedy. He is survived by his wife of 42 years Dianna, his son Michael and wife Toni-Ann; granddaughters Taylor and Mikayla. Both Mom and Dad owned and operated "Kenny's Store" on Park Avenue for a number of years where they met and have kept many friends from that time She was an inspiration to us all and we will surely miss her. KIPNIS, Norman - Passed away peacefully in Kamloops B.C. on October 22nd, 2011, Norman Kipnis, 89 years old. Royal 28th Canadian Armoured Regiment, Norman became a professional mining engineer after the War. After working in Northern Ontario and Mexico, Norman retired from the Newfoundland Department of Mines and Energy in 1987. Norman was an avid sailor and a long time member of the Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club. MOLLAN (nee Hickey), June Marie - Passed peacefully away on October 19, 2011, following a brief illness, June Marie (Gorrell) Mollan of Yucaipa, California in her 73rd year. June was predeceased by her parents Alex and Elizabeth Frances Hickey of St. John's. Left with fond and loving memories are her children: John Gorrell (Diana), Kerry Gorrell (Gina), Tony Gorrell (Kristi) and Michelle (Gorrell) Linscott (Dan); eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren in California, who were her pride and joy. Also mourning her loss are her five sisters: Doris Varley (Fred deceased) Texas, Win Huerta (Peter) Utah, Alice Pinck (Stan) California, Shirley Fleming (Doug deceased), Patricia Thoden (Henry) and one brother Larry Hickey (Lesley Ann) of St. John's, as well as many special nieces and nephews and a large number of relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place and a Mass of Christian Burial was held on November 4, 2011 at St. Francis Xavier Cabrini Church, Yucaipa, California. While June lived and raised her family in California, she remained very close to her family in Newfoundland and was always very proud of her roots. A memorial service to celebrate June's life will take place in her beloved St. John's at a future date.

MORGAN, Lancelot Maxwell (Lance) - It is with great sadness we announce Lance's passing on Sunday Oct. 30, 2011. Devoted husband to Verna (nee Taylor) for 65 years. Loving father to Maxine (Dan) Lee, Bernice (Selwyn) Welsh and John (Patti) Morgan. Treasured Grandfather to Scott, Sheryl (Neal) Pardy, Krista, Daniel ( Kelly) , Jeremy (Susie), Gillian and Katie. Cherished Great Grandfather to Hayley, Dylan and Sophie. Survived by his loyal sister Florence Van Limburgh of Bremerton Washington and sister-in-law Ruby Feltham of Glovertown NL. Adored by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents Harvey and Emma Morgan of Salmon Cove NL and in-laws Jacob and Jane Taylor of Cupids NL. Lance was born in South River, Clarks Beach on Oct. 10, 1922. After building their own home, Lance and Verna settled in Dunville where they have lived for over sixty years. Like many Newfoundlanders, Lance found work with the US Navy at Argentia, where he was a proud employee for over 31 Years. He enjoyed nothing more than to take friends and family down to the base for a night of drinking, eating and playing the slots while smuggling the occasional bottle off the base. While working full time he and Verna found time to build and operate Morgan's General Store in Dunville, which they ran as a team for over twenty years. Struggling to raise a family and keep two jobs, Lance still found time for friends and community. He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge, Bay Roberts until health and mobility issues interfered with his ability to attend. He played a very active role with St. Martin's Anglican Church, Dunville helping to physically build the church as well as contributing time and resources to ensure its success. As well he was an avid hunter, sport fisherman and camper and so between work, the church and his hobbies, he formed many lifelong friendships. As a result of childhood polio Lance suffered mobility issues and at a young age he developed type 1 diabetes, however he was a fighter who never let these aliments slow him down. He lived life to the fullest, enjoying friends and family to the end and was an inspiration to all who knew him.
The family would like to offer a special thank you to Linda Lake, Lance's caregiver, who went above and beyond the call of duty to make his life as comfortable as possible. PIKE, Eugene - Passed peacefully away on October 3, 2011 at Chancellor Park, Eugene Pike aged 82 years. Predeceased by his parents Moses and Tamar, 3 brothers and 3 sisters. Leaving to mourn his loving wife of 44 years Marilyn (nee Anthony); sons David (Trudy), and Greg (Lynn); four precious granddaughters Brooklyn, Allison, Lauren, and Maria; special niece Rose Hewitt (Ray); as well as many other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Eugene was the first blind person to graduate from Memorial University before joining the CNIB. Eugene worked with the CNIB his entire career, retiring as Executive Director. He was very active in the community through his efforts with the St. John's Lions Club. Being an honorary life member, Eugene had also been the recipient of many awards - including the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. RABBITTS, Muriel G. - Passed peacefully away in Ryde, Isle of Wight (UK) on Saturday, October 8, 2011 at the age of 101 years. Predeceased by her parents Fred and Jessie of St John's; her brothers: Jack, Max and George; as well as her sister Jean. Leaving to mourn her sisters-in-law: Dorothy Rabbitts (St. John's), and Elva Rabbitts-Sutcliffe (Colorado Springs, Col.); niece Margaret (Corner Brook); and nephews: Derek Rabbitts (Monroe, NY), and David Rabbitts (Clearwater, Fla.). Muriel was educated at The Methodist College and trained as a nurse at The Grace General. She went to Britain prior to the outbreak of WW II and though she briefly returned to Newfoundland in the late 1940's, she returned to live out her career in East London. A former member of George Street United Church choir, Muriel was an accomplished pianist, singer, poet, story teller and authored a number of children's books. Her craft skills were varied and earned her many accolades. Cremation has taken place in the UK. A memorial service for the late Muriel G. Rabbitts will be held on Monday, July 23, 2012, at 2 p.m. from George Street United Church, with interment to follow at the General Protestant Cemetery, Old Topsail Road. RICHE, Nancy - (1944-2011) Passed away October 1st, 2011 at the Health Sciences Complex in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, age 66 years. A labour organizer and social activist, Nancy was a tireless fighter for working people the world over and for the rights of women. Nancy, whose professional life began as a vocational instructor, went on to become Director of Education, Research and Communication of Newfoundland Association of Public Employees, Secretary-Treasurer of the National Union of Public and General Employees, Executive Vice-President and later Secretary Treasurer of the Canadian Labour Congress, Vice President of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions in Brussels, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador New Democratic Party, Vice President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour. Nancy received the Order of Canada, a Dr. of Letters Honoris Causa from Memorial University, the AFL-CIO Meary-Lane Human Rights Award and the Elijah Barayi Award from Congress of South African Trade Unions for her contribution to the struggle against apartheid. She was proud to be a Wren. RYAN, Richard - (95 - Whitney Pier) - Richard Clayton Ryan, 95 of Dominion Street, Whitney Pier, passed away peacefully at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney on Thursday, October 20, 2011. Born in Avondale, NL, he was the son of the late James and Agnes (Doyle) Ryan, Avondale, NL. He was a longtime resident of Whitney Pier and a member of Holy Redeemer parish. Richard was employed at the Sydney Steel Plant, Blast Furnace Dept. until his retirement in 1979. He was a member of the Sydney Pensioners Club and enjoyed bowling and was an avid Tarabish player. Richard will be sadly missed by many friends and family. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Richard is survived by his loving family: John and Jean Ryan, Sydney; son, Clayton, Ontario. He is also survived by his grandchildren Cheryl Sousa, Clayton Ryan, both of Ontario; Michael Ryan, Charlottetown, PE; Jennifer Maher, Calgary, AB; great-grandchildren, Michael Sousa, Taylor Ryan, Jack and Penny Maher and also by brother-in-law Aiden Browne, ON. TAPPER (O'Brien), Hilda Josephine - Passed away peacefully at St. Patrick's Mercy Home on Tuesday, October 25, 2011, Hilda Tapper of St. John's, age 90 years. Predeceased by her loving husband Harold in 2001; parents William and Sarah; brothers: Thomas and Michael, and sisters: Joan, Mary, Margaret, Kit and Olive. Left to cherish their many beautiful memories, children: Harold (Margaret Porter), Edie, Maureen Neary (Tony Caul), Marion Hrabowsky, Gerry (Anna) and Dorothy; grandchildren: Shawn (Sarah), Chris, Krysta, Scott, Matthew and Michael; great-grandchildren: Kayle and Shawna; very special niece Laura Smith who offered tremendous support; many relatives and friends; and Nanny's little pet Misty. THORNE, Marjorie Lynn (Lynnie) - Passed peacefully away on October 23rd, 2011 at the Health Sciences Centre in the presence of her loving family, Lynn Thorne of Torbay, age 51. WINSOR (nee Byrne), Mary Eileen (Molly) - Passed peacefully away at the Golden Years Nursing Home in Cambridge, Ontario on October 29, 2011, in the presence of her family, Molly Winsor, formerly of Bell Island, NL, at the age of 91 years. She was the last of the Byrne family of Bell Island where she resided for 70 years. Molly was predeceased by her father and mother, James and Maria Byrne, three brothers and six sisters, her husband George, and her sons-in-law: Peter Bickford and Gerald Laurie. Leaving to mourn her children: Gladys Eileen (Steve), of Bell Island; Dorothy, Pierce (Alice); Francis (Robert); George (Catherine); Gary; Wallace (Sally); Sean (Allison); Maurice (Elaine); Sonia (Rene); and Marilyn (Albert) all of Cambridge, Ont.; as well as Elizabeth (Don) of Mount Pearl, and Jerome (Daphne) in St. John's. Also treasuring her memory are twenty-three grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, and ten great-great-great-grandchildren, her many nieces and nephews , and a large circle of friends in Ontario and NL; as well as her special friend Ron Rahmann of Cambridge. Molly came home to Bell Island to be buried next to her husband George in Lance Cove Cemetery overlooking the Tickle. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Michael's Church on Bell Island on November 3, 2011.

YETMAN, Evelyn Belle (Stacey) - 1917 - 2011. Passed peacefully away on Thursday, October 20, 2011, in her 95th year, in Ottawa. Predeceased by her parents, Wilson and Minnie (Brinston) Stacey, daughter Pamela Babstock (Judy Eddy deceased), granddaughter Donna and husband Stewart. Leaving to mourn her children: Stewart (Shirley), Douglas (Bride), Alec (June), Rosalie Dodge, all of St. John's, Hilda (of Ottawa) and Chuck (Diane) (of Oshawa). She also leaves 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, friend Alison Moore, many nieces and nephews, friends and relatives in St. John's and Ottawa. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd., St. John's on Tuesday, November 1st, 2011, from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral will take place on Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. in the Carnell Memorial Chapel. Interment to follow at the General Protestant Cemetery, Old Topsail Rd.
