She was raised, in the family home that her father, Jack Stan Mercer, had built, in the fishing village of Coley's Point, Conception Bay, Newfoundland. She spent her teenage years as a provider to her younger siblings at home and as a helper to her father on the Labrador. On April 29, 1941, Grace married Harold Martin, a handsome young fisherman and swiler from nearby Port de Grave. They had three children: Lewis, Hazel, and Harold (more affectionately called by Gracie, as Luce, Poose and Bab). Grace and Harold enjoyed a long life together, and were inseparable for 61 years. At the age of 30, Grace left her Newfoundland home, for the first time, and journeyed, by train with 3 young children, to join Harold in Toronto, to carve out a new life for their family. She was, initially, a home-maker, care-giver, and landlord having taken in several boarders in order to augment the family income. Grace later joined the work force and spent a number of years at Canada Life. She was very proud of this accomplishment. In her mid and latter years she enjoyed numerous family gatherings and annual trips back home, where she and hubby spent 4 - 5 months every year in their beloved homestead. Grace enjoyed a long, full life and brought joy into the hearts of everyone she touched. She passed from this life, very peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Friday, October 5th, 2012, in her 96th year. Grace was predeceased, by 10 years, by her loving husband, Harold. Along with her 3 children: Lewis (Joan), Hazel (Ivan), and Harold (Sue), Nana will be so missed by her 8 grandchildren: Allison (Paul), Ryan (Suzanne), Adam (Melissa), Jake (Clare), Stephanie (Jason), Julie (Gilles), Stefan (Kate) and Robbie (Alyssa). Nana will also be missed and remembered by her adoring great-grandchildren: Gracie, Katie, Josh, James, Cooper, Charlie, Maddie, Olivia, and newly arrived Kaitlyn. Grace is survived by her siblings: Ted (Jean) of St. John's, Florence of Bay Roberts, Mabel (Jerry) of St. John's, Bill (Diane) of Toronto and Annie (Eric) of Bay Roberts. Grace will also be missed by her sister-in-law and tea buddy, Clara Morgan.

When those we love have left this earth, we still can feel them near. We'll see a picture, hear a song, and it¹s just like they are here. And when we call upon our faith, when we believe and trust, we know the ones we care about are always close to us. Constance Parker Graham

WILLIAMS, Kathleen - Our mother was the definition of what every other would strive to be. She loved her family who always came first in her life. Her life was full when she was surrounded by children and grandchildren. Our Mother was the most caring, loving person we have and ever will encounter. She had that special something that touched everyone she met. She had the most beautiful smile, a smile that would not only light up a room but would light up your soul. Her life was full of laughter, fun, music and dance. You could see how she could brighten someone's day with her rendition of "are you lonesome tonight". Our Mother had a special gift with people that left them with a smile. Our hearts are broken and she will be forever missed.
Mother had a wonderful life from raising her children and then her grandchildren. Dancing was her passion from going to dances during WWII at the Caribou Hut and then at the Legion branches 1 and 56, the Knights of Columbus and especially the BIS on St. Patrick's day. She always had a smile and made everyone around her a little happier, brightening everyone's day with a song or story.

Special Thanks to her family doctor Michelle Young and her caregivers Denise Kennedy and Wanda Tiller and the caring and compassionate staff of 4 West St. Clare's.
