BARRY, Patrick
Born: July 17th, 1938
Passed on: October 22nd, 2018

"Care-giving often calls us to lean into love we didn't know possible."
Entered into eternal rest at Dr. Walter Templeman Health Care Centre, Bell Island, Patrick Barry, age 80, originally from Curling. Predeceased by his parents, and his brother James (January 8, 2018). Left to mourn are his brother Bernard, and John and Theresa Power, his alternate family, and his home care workers of St. Bride's. Patrick, as you enter your heavenly home, and brighten the days with your special smile, there will be lots of cheesies and candy waiting for you. You came into our lives in April 2000. With adjusting to a new home your smile said it all, it brightened our days. You were a brother, a protector and a friend to all. Anyone who helped out felt the love from you, especially the home care workers who cared and loved you during the many years that they cared for you. A very special thanks to all the staff at the Dr. Walter Templeman Health Care Centre, from the cleaners, to the doctors, social worker, management and hands-on staff, for the excellent care shown to Patrick. They went above and beyond their duties to be with Patrick, especially since July, when his needs and care became more profound. How many would sit and play music and give that extra special care, not leaving your shift until you waved good-bye, and giving him a hug to make him feel safe and loved. Not many would do that, but you sure did. Words cannot express our thanks to all, but our hearts feel it. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Maher's Funeral Home, Placentia. Visitation to take place on Tuesday, October 23rd from 1-8 pm. Mass of Christian Burial to take place 10:30 am on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at Sacred Heart Church, Placentia. She was a gourmet cook who, along with her friends, started a monthly supper club in the early 1970's, which continued for many decades. Monica and Spencer also had many travelling adventures together with their friends. Monica was a passionate reader and often read several books a week. She also loved proper grammar, as many can attest to! (Mom, we hope we didn't make too many mistakes with this!). Monica formed EPAC (Exceptional Patients Against Cancer) in the Fall of 2001, just eight months after her terminal cancer diagnosis, and hosted inspirational meetings where people would come to share their stories and learn from one another. Monica was remarkable in so many ways; we'll miss her dearly. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Kenny's Pond Retirement Residence for their professionalism and loving care of Monica. Your kindness and compassion shown to Monica and our family will never be forgotten. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Carnell's Funeral home, 329 Freshwater Road from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm on Tuesday, October 16, 2018. A funeral service and celebration of Monica's life will be held at the Anglican Cathedral on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at 2 pm. As an expression of sympathy, donations in Monica's memory may be made to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation. To leave a message of condolence, please visit www.carnells.com

KELLY, Isabel Marie
Born: February 21st, 1937
Passed on: October 26th, 2018

At 1:16am Isabel Marie Kelly (Dalton) took her last breath in the arms of her family at home in Harbour Main on Friday October 26. We were surrounded by her loving Home Support Workers…the angels to the Kelly/Walsh/Comeau family. Mom lived her life dedicated to her family, her God and her community. She joined her husband and soulmate, William P. Kelly in heaven where we imagine them dancing and having a Boston Cream together. Loving her and missing her this week are son Eddy, daughter-in-law Jaime Comeau, grandkids Nemiah and Naeem, daughter Catherine Ann, son-in-law Wayne Walsh, grandkids Xavier and Sibéal. Mom was blessed with a large family. We imagine them having a fine chat today while Mary Alexis plays guitar. She joins her parents Ann and Nicolas Dalton, brothers Richard (Elizabeth), Patrick (Patricia), Gregory (Gertrude), Lawrence, Charles, sisters Bernadette (Cyril), Margaret (Frank), Annie, Florence (Jim), Kathleen and brother-in-law John. Mom leaves her big sisters Madeline (Raymond) and Ester and her sister-in-law Margaret. From the Kelly family Mom joins Rose and Richard Kelly, brothers-in-law Gerald (Betty), Edmund, Edward and sister-in-law Nellie. She was loved by Harriet, Theresa, Tony (Lucy) and Ron (Nora). Mom was blessed to have dozens of nieces and nephews, close friends, friends of her children and grandchildren and circles of friends from across Canada. Supporting us and loving us are the amazing Mrs. Betty Walsh as well as Maurice and Odette Comeau. Mom spent 16 years of her life as Sister Mary Xavier. She loved her time with the Presentation Sisters and was dedicated to the many communities she served and students she educated. Her 40 years as teacher gifted her so much light. Mom lived for almost 11 years with Dementia. In these final years, she taught us all strength and courage, every day, as she fought to stay with her family as long as she could. Our family was supported by an amazing team of medical professionals. Special love going to Dr. Robbins (and her team), our community health nurses in Holyrood - Alana, Melissa, Jeaniel and Jill. To the dedicated Home Support Workers- Florence (Nano), Bride, Maggie, Lisa, Teresa and the many others over the past five years - thank you for helping us keep Mom home. We love you all so much. We will be celebrating a life well lived on Sunday and Monday at Dunphys Funeral Home in Holyrood, 2-4pm and 7-9pm each day. Our kids will be with us and we welcome lots of laughter from your own. Please come to share your stories and memories of our remarkable mother, wife, sister, daughter, aunt, community member and beautiful human. Mom's funeral will be in St. Peter's and Paul's Parish in Harbour Main on Tuesday October 30th at 10:30am. We ask, if you can, to wear something pink or purple in honour of her favourite colours. Mom died after living the most giving life, rooted in gratitude, service and love. As her language became limited, she left us with one message - Love everybody. Donations can be made to a fund we are creating that will support youth who are helping cultivate and build community through service to others. Please visit www.dunphys.ca to sign the memorial guest book or to send a message of condolence.

MacPHERSON, Alan
Born In: Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom
Born: September 28th, 1927
Passed in: London, Ontario, Canada
Passed on: October 26th, 2018
Dr. Alan Gibson Macpherson
, born 28 September, 1927 in Edinburgh, Scotland to Andrew Gibson Macpherson and Ethel Olive Macpherson (nee Whayman) passed away peacefully in the company of family on October 26, 2018 in London, Ontario. He was 91 years old. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister Olive Macpherson (1931-2002), and is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dr. Joyce Macpherson (nee Brown); son Ewan Andrew Macpherson (Nancy Davis) and grandchildren Jessica and Aaron, of London; and daughter Anne Sarah Macpherson (James Spiller) and granddaughters Aelis and Tamsin, of Rochester, New York. He was a proud alumnus of the University of Edinburgh [M.A. (Hons.), 1950] and McGill [Ph.D. 1969], and taught at St Andrews (1953-56), McMaster (1956-59), Central Michigan (1960-61), and the University of Rochester (1961-66) before joining the Department of Geography at Memorial University in 1966, retiring as Professor Emeritus in 1993. His doctoral work examined systems of land tenure in the Scottish Highlands in the 1700's, his subsequent academic work in historical geography and historical demography concentrated on North Atlantic migration and settlement, and among other endeavors he was the editor of three volumes (one co-edited with Joyce) published by Memorial's Department of Geography concerning the history and historical and physical geography of Newfoundland. He devoted much of his retirement to researching the life of William Eppes Cormack (known for his walk across Newfoundland in 1822 and for his involvement with the Beothuk). This research was incorporated into two articles prepared by his colleague Dr. Ingeborg Marshall and published in "Newfoundland & Labrador Studies" in 2016 and 2017. As Seanachaidh (Historian) of the Clan Macpherson Association, he consulted and published extensively on Clan history, and assisted Macphersons worldwide with their genealogical inquiries. In 1966 the Association published his history of the Clan, "The Posterity of the Three Brethern" (now in its 5th edition, 2004). His monograph, "A Day's March to Ruin: a documentary narrative of the Badenoch Men in the 'Forty-Five and biography of Col. Ewan Macpherson of Cluny, 1706-1764", begun in 1953 and based on decades of archival work, was published in 1996. Alan was an avid CBC Radio listener, a long-time Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra subscriber, a diligent reader of scientific biographies, and a devotee of the literary worlds of JRR Tolkien, Edith Pargeter, Patrick O'Brian, and latterly, JK Rowling. He loved exploring Newfoundland's historical and natural heritage, tending, harvesting, and eating vegetables and berries from his garden, walking the trails around St. John's' ponds and lake with his friend and neighbour, Bruce Shawyer, and hiking over Signal Hill on his birthday. His family takes comfort in the rich legacy of research and scholarship he leaves to his academic community, his Clan, and his family, and in his lifetime of generous concern for, and correspondence with, relatives, friends, and students alike. His family is also deeply grateful to the staff of the Huronview (Clinton, ON) and Henley Place (London, ON) homes for the skilled and compassionate care they provided in his final months. In accordance with his wishes, his remains have been bequeathed to the Western University Medical School; a celebration of Alan's life will take place at a later date. Donations to support the Clan Macpherson Museum would be most welcome.

NOSEWORTHY, Helen (nee Wiseman)
Passed on: October 5th, 2018

Surrounded by her loving family, we said goodbye to our beloved family Matriarch on October 5th, 2018. 92 "YEARS YOUNG" Helen ("momma" "Nana" "GG") reassured us it was "her time" and did not leave without leaving a "monumental footprint". With a passion for life and living, loved for her spirited optimism and ability to live in and enjoy the moment, Helen left a lasting impression with everyone she encountered. She continued to embrace change, right up to the last decade of her life, and was a role model to all. Forever young at heart, Helen was loved by all who had the opportunity to have met her. Helen's passion for life led to her recognition in the Newfoundland Bowling Hall of Fame, unsurmountable friendships (through travel clubs, card nights and bingo games with her close friends at the Bishop Meaden Manor.) She was dearly loved and will be missed most by: her daughter Janet Steele (son-in-law Michael); grandchildren Heather (Trent Milton), Johnson (Courtney), Hilary (Logan Wall); precious great-grandchildren Ben, Emma and Grace; brother Robert Cole; sister Elinor (James Curran); nieces and nephews, Robert, Diane, Anita, Marina, Peter, Bob, Jill, Christian, Hilary, Megan, Robbie, Heather and Andrew. Predeceased by: Husband William; parents Cyril and Florence (Voisey Cole); brothers Cyril, Kitchener, Edgar (Betty) and sisters Louise (Ed Ringman) and Olive (Cliff Andrews) and nieces Gloria and Cathy. Special thank you to: Dr.'s Mabel Greene, Arthur Rideout and James Whalen who always took such great care of my momma, and to the amazing Staff at the Dartmouth General Hospital (Emergency and 3rd West). And to special friends Brenda and Herbert Carter who always looked out for mom in my absence. A private family ceremony and cremation has taken place in Dartmouth, NS. A Celebration of Her Life will follow in August 2019 in St John's. Donations in memory of Helen can be made to NL YBC (Youth Bowling Club), 212-27 Rhodora St, St John's, A1A 0M8.

RUSSELL, Leslie John
Passed on: October 16th, 2018

Everything is better with onions. That was the lifelong and firmly held belief of Leslie John Russell - Les to all who knew him. He passed peacefully away on October 16, 2018 at the Miller Centre. His mighty heart and incredible spirit is carried on by his wife, three children, five grandchildren, sister, nieces and nephews and an extended family of friends and relations. In addition to the above gastronomic advice, his life's advice was as follows - anything worth doing is worth doing right, always think positively, see the beauty that is everywhere, read books - a lot of them, treat people with integrity and respect, make a difference, leave things better than you found them, make time for a nap every day and don't throw away anything that could be used down the line. He was someone who made an instant and lasting impression. He was always a gentleman - in appearance, character and action. He was a wonderful storyteller who enjoyed hearing other's stories as much as he enjoyed telling his own. He was wise and always had advice for family and friends who sought his counsel. He was relentlessly optimistic - even in the face of his own mortality. He loved music and the way it made him feel. He was often found tapping his toes, whistling or conducting the virtual orchestra he saw while listening to his favorite music. He saw beauty in the everyday - a flower, a sunset, the dew on a spider's web. He loved to laugh and had an easy smile that lit up his face. Les was husband to his beloved Verna (Williams) for 49 years, father of Nancy (Brent Pittman), Lisa (Darcy Sutton), Ian (Carolyn Guy), grandfather to Joshua, Gabriel, Rachel, Charlotte and Alex, and brother to Susan. He was uncle to seven nieces and nephews and in particular was a father figure to his nephew Steve. He was predeceased by his parents, Manetta and Gary; sister, Manetta; brother, Eric and granddaughter, Madelyne. Cremation has taken place. Visitation at Carnell's Funeral Home (329 Freshwater Road, St. Johns) Friday, October 19, 2018 from 2:00 - 4:00 PM and 7:00 - 9:00 PM and Saturday, October 20, 2018 from 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM. Memorial Service to be held at Carnell's Memorial Chapel on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boy Scouts of Newfoundland and Labrador - an organization of which he was a lifelong supporter and contributor.
