BINDON, William John
Published: October 13, 2021
July 24, 1953-October 4, 2021

Just months after being diagnosed with ALS, William (Bill) Bindon passed away on October 4, 2021 at Brampton Civic Hospital in Ontario with his devoted wife, Kate, by his side. Bill was predeceased by his parents William and Beatrice Bindon, and older sister, Anne Van Biezen. Left with many fond and loving memories are his wife Kate Rowe, sisters Sandra Mitchell (Kirke), Carol Wright (Philip), Janice Bindon and Michelle Bindon (Ken), his nephews and nieces and a variety of additional relatives and friends. Bill was born in St. John's, Newfoundland on July 24, 1953; enthusiastically welcomed and celebrated by his family; happily claiming his status as little brother to four older sisters, as well as becoming third in a family line of William Bindons. Growing up in St. John's, Bill enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities, including basketball, hockey, curling, skiing, baseball, and particularly golf, an interest he carried into his retirement. Bill particularly loved salmon fishing with his childhood friends, Rick Maddigan, Fred Kirby and Keith Brown, enjoying it so much in fact, that at the age of 16, he cut a cast off his wrist with a knife and saw to better be able to throw his salmon line across the river. In the early years, Bill attended St. Bon's School and spent two years at Gonzaga High School, before completing his high school education at Mount Royal High School in Montreal. He graduated from the University of Alberta in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science in Forestry, and worked for the Alberta Forest Service for a number of years. He returned to St. John's in 1986 to complete a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science. He also graduated with a certificate in Business Administration in 2000. Bill and Kate moved to Ontario where he began a career with the Toronto Fire Services in March 1991. Bill worked in the Communications Department and retired as a District Chief in January, 2018. Through the years Bill and Kate enjoyed travel, and were fortunate enough to visit New Zealand, Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, Nepal, Venezuela, Mexico and a variety of resorts in the Caribbean. Bill particularly enjoyed a 2012 visit with his long-time friend, Bob Puddester who was on a work assignment in the Netherlands, and was especially touched by a weekend visit to Beaumont Hamel in France during that trip. Sincere thanks to everyone who reached out and/or helped care for Bill during his journey with ALS. A very special thank you to his friend, Bobby Tully and wife Noreen, who provided exceptional care and support over the past year and a half. Thank you to his sister-in-law, Donna McGrath, who helped take care of him over the past 6 months. Thanks to his family doctor, Dr. Frederick Forbes, who visited Bill regularly at home during the last months of his illness. This exceptional "team" enabled Bill to be cared for at home until his passing. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held in Newfoundland on a future date to be determined. Donations in Bill's memory may be made to the ALS Society of Canada.

CANNING, Ada
Published: October 16, 2021
April 21, 1951-October 12, 2021

It is with great sadness and wonderful memories that we announce the passing of Ada Canning in her 71st year, surrounded by family at St. Luke's Home after a lengthy and courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease. Left with broken hearts filled with wonderful memories are her daughter Samantha McMullin, son-in-law Glenn, granddaughter Rebecca, Special Nephew Will Canning, as well as a large circle of family and friends. Gone on ahead and waiting to greet her with open arms are her partner Gerald Abbott, her parents James and Jean Canning, sisters Joan, Betty and Mary and brothers Kenneth and Archibald, Samantha's father Ken Wheeler, sister-in-law Peggy Ruby, brothers-in-law Bob Matchim, Bob Farrell and Gary Wheeler, and her faithful furry companion Holly. Ada was born and raised in St. John's to wonderful parents; a stay-at-home mom and land surveyor father. She grew up adoring her older sister Joan whom she always tried to tag along behind and her brother Ken with whom she enjoyed many adventures during summer vacations when they would be allowed to accompany their father into the untapped wilderness at fly-in camps where he was plying his trade. She was a talented figure skater and had wonderful memories from her teen years competing and travelling. She was a Spencer girl who was always glad to run into an old friend from those days. She fell in love at a very early age and grew up fast when she left home at the young age of 18 to begin her life as a military wife and young mother. She always worked hard to give us a wonderful home and never shrank from the challenge at every posting to get us settled and become an active member of the current military community. After military life she returned to Newfoundland and settled in Conception Bay South. She thoroughly enjoyed reconnecting with old friends and much missed family and was especially grateful to be close to her sister Joan and family as well as the Wheeler Clan. Ada was a fighter, when her life took a drastic turn at 51 she pulled up her big girl panties and despite her devastation she took herself back to school to fulfill a long-time dream of becoming a hairdresser. She didn't let being more than twice her classmates age discourage her from her goal. She was fortunate to meet a wonderful new life partner as she began this new chapter of her life. She and Gerry made a wonderful couple and each helped the other heal and enjoy living again. They had many wonderful adventures camping with friends and enjoying their many like interests. We were also blessed to have Gerry in our lives. We are thankful for his love and care for Mom and his desire to join into our family life. Sadly only a few years later Mom once again faced difficult times as Gerry was struck ill and she did her very best to love and care for him while also being struck down herself with Parkinson's. She once again faced adversity with great strength and determination. She tried her very best to always do the right thing no matter how difficult. She was selfless and put everyone else's needs above her own. Her love and commitment to Gerry was inspiring and she spent every day visiting with him at St. Luke's until her illness progressed and she eventually joined him to live there. Ada was a wonderful mother, grandmother, wife, partner, loyal friend and fabulous homemaker. She loved baking, ice and roller skating, dancing (particularly the jive and line dancing), walking, crocheting, gardening, camping, beach vacations, wine-drinking, laughing, Coronation Street, all animals great and small, and most of all her family and friends. She loved deeply and wore her heart on her sleeve. She spoke truthfully and always "told it like it was" a trait some loved about her and others cringed at the thought of, but none-the-less it was a big part of who she was. She had a fiery wit that she kept with her till the end much to the amusement of her steadfast caregivers at St. Luke's. We are especially grateful to mom's sisters-in-law Peggy Ruby (posthumously) and Barb Farrell, her cousin Trudy Lilly and her long-time friend Patricia Jefford who visited with her faithfully during her time in long-term care and offered immense emotional support to us. There are no words to express how much this support meant. And thank you to all other family and friends who dropped in to see her during her time at St. Luke's. Special thanks to all of the wonderful staff and wingless angels who work tirelessly at St. Luke's Nursing Home especially those on Pleasant View Terrace & Cabot Square where she resided for the end of her earthly journey. Many thanks to Dr. Colin Penney for his care and compassion to not only Mom, but us as well. He truly is everything you could hope for in a doctor. All of you made mom's final months and days as comfortable and homey as possible. In keeping with her wishes there will be no visitation or service. She wished for everyone to remember her in life not in death. Cremation has taken place and interment will follow shortly thereafter when those closest to her can be together, during a private family ceremony at Forest Road Anglican Cemetery where she will be reunited with her parents, siblings, grandparents and extended family that have gone on ahead of her and will be waiting to greet her. If you wish to do something in memory of her please consider visiting someone in long term care (it means more to them than you can ever imagine), committing a random act of kindness, or support of some kind to an animal shelter. These things would make her smile. To send a message of condolence, please visit www.hickeysfuneralhome.com
Ada would want to remind you…….life is short…….eat the cake, buy the shoes, take the trip! We are born of love; love is our mother. I will hold you in my heart, until we meet again Mom

DEVINE, Marie Marguerite (Kemp)
Published: October 05, 2021

Gloriously (and gently) lifted into heaven, Marie Marguerite (Kemp) Devine, on October 2nd, 2021 at the magnificent age of 94 ½ years! Marie was pre-deceased by her husband Brendan and their two daughters, Brenda and Carol. Leaving to celebrate her life are her daughters Anne and Kathy (Hugh Scott). Throughout her lifetime, Marie was known to be an accomplished seamstress, making most of her own clothes - even though her husband of 63 years owned a clothing store downtown! (The Big Six) In 1955, she was voted one of Canada's ten best dressed women!! Marie was very involved with the Dominion Drama Festival in her earlier years and costumed many stage productions as well as working in the costume department at CBC television for a couple of years. She was very active over her lifetime, her hobbies included dancing, (she and Brendan spent many Saturday nights at The Old Colony Club dancing to live Big Band music); curling, golfing, shuffle board and tennis - most of which they did during their 20 winters in Florida! But her favourite pastime was horseback riding, which she did well into her 70's and possibly early 80's. She had a favourite horse at Rainbow Riders that she used to take out every week faithfully, and earlier in life, she had two horses of her own that she and Carol used to ride….Marie will be remembered not only for her abilities and talents, but mostly for her kindness, composure and classiness! And she was the most amazing mother, in EVERY respect! Special thanks to ALL THE STAFF at Kenny's Pond Residence who not only took such tender loving care of her for the past 5 years, but loved her - and told her so! THANK you!! Xoxo. We're not going to tell you to rest in peace mom….but rather, kick your heels up with dad once again! See if you can find some Big Band music up there in heaven!! We will forever love you and cherish you. Xo. Visitation at Caul's Funeral Home, Wednesday, October 6th, 2021 from 10:00am to 2:00pm with burial to follow at 2:30pm. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to Rainbow Riders Therapeutic Riding Program. To view the online memorial guestbook or leave a message of condolence, please visit www.cauls.ca

Thank you to Kristin Tarrant at Bayshore Home Health, we are so grateful for the help and the care that you have given our dad the last 7 months. To Lana and staff at Aurora Estates, while dad was only with you a short time, he absolutely loved his new home. The last 9 months have been so hard on him emotionally, mentally and physically. HODDER, John Walter
Published: October 05, 2021

It is with deep and profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of John Walter Hodder, age 74, on October 1, 2021, with his wife Mary by his side. Predeceased by his brother Jim Hodder and their parents, Walter and Carrie (Caines) Hodder. John was the beloved husband of Mary Pike and cherished father of Jill Hodder and granddaughter Chloe Stamp. Leaving also to mourn our great loss are Bev Janes; sisters-in-law Catherine Hodder, Carol Guzzwell (Keith), Brenda Vaughan (Ken), Sandra Pike (Gabi Haberfeld); brothers-in-law Gordon Pike, Robert Pike (Debbie); nephews Jim and Thomas Hodder, Michael Vaughan; nieces Cheryl Schnegg (Eric), Carla Hodder-Drake, Cynthia van den Hanenberg (Mike), Allison Guzzwell, and Robyn Lynn and Jessica Pike; the Caines family; and a very large circle of friends, in particular his dearest friend, Irene Baird. Over the course of each of our lifetimes, we all give parts of ourselves to others. In this respect, John was exceptional. As a public servant of almost forty-five years John worked in the Departments of Labour with the Labour Relations Agency; Fisheries and Aquaculture; Environment and Labour; and Workers Compensation. However, John was the consummate volunteer, and to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador he gave what he always considered his highest achievement, the gift of public safety. Through John's volunteer work with the Newfoundland Safety Council he pursued mandatory seat belt legislation, all-terrain vehicle legislation, and bicycle helmet legislation. He developed and oversaw the implementation of an occupational health and safety training section, motorcycle training program, Elmer the Safety Elephant program, and the baby-sitting training course. As a forty-two-year member of the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE), John originated the first-ever Newfoundland Occupational Health and Safety Week. This was the precursor to the Canadian Occupational Safety and Health Week, which then evolved into the North American Occupational Safety and Health Week. In 1985 John became the first Newfoundland and Labrador recipient of the CSSE National Service to Safety Award, the Society's highest honour. For almost fifty years, John was an active Kinsman with the St. John's Kinsmen Club. The Kin motto "Serving the Community's Greatest Need" entails doing for others, and alongside fellow Kinsmen he raised funds for a myriad of provincial groups such Big Brothers, Cystic Fibrosis, VON, and Multiple Sclerosis. In the spirit of Kin, John always forged linkages with other service and nonprofit organizations. For example, through Kinsmen the block parent program was brought to Conception Bay South in 1979. In 1987 John employed the Kinsmen network in the promotion of Canada Day throughout our province. In 1999 a member of the Lung Association Newfoundland and Labrador asked for his assistance in working with the provincial nonprofit sector, and he immediately began eighteen years of service as a volunteer board member. The Lung Association's motto, "When you can't breathe, nothing else matters," ensured his dedication and commitment to improving the health of those who struggle to breathe. In an ironic twist of fate, in August 2017 John was diagnosed with Interstitial Lung Disease, which ultimately took his life. In recognition of his lifetime of dedicated volunteering, John was awarded the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal for outstanding community service in 2012, recognizing his long involvement in a wide variety of service organizations, including the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Canadian Registered Safety Professionals, the Canadian Cancer Society, St. John Ambulance, Safety Services Newfoundland Labrador, the Lung Association Newfoundland and Labrador, the Atlantic Region Canadian Marine Advisory Council, the Royal Canadian Air Force Association, and the Association of Kinsmen, Kinette and Kin Clubs of Canada. In 1998 he was invested into the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem by the Governor General of Canada for his lifetime dedication to occupational health and safety. John received outstanding service awards from Hostelling International-Canada, the Canada Safety Council, and Kin Canada. John has received the commendations of Life Membership in both the Kinsmen Club of St. John's and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering. John was a solid presence in the lives of his family and friends. To the many who sought his opinion or advice he gave thoughtful, measured answers. His calm demeanour and unruffled personality lent strength to others. John had a voracious interest in news that spanned local to international events. Political happenings were a favourite. John's enviable memory and his ability to piece together snippets of information served him well in conversations with so many people from diverse backgrounds, that it was a pure pleasure just to listen to him make connections. As much as John gave service to provincial and national organizations, his heart was always with the individual. To the members of the 150 (North Atlantic) Wing of the Royal Canadian Air Force Association, thank you. John treasured your friendships. During his twenty-two years with the Wing, John and was proud to serve on the executive as President, Vice-President, and Treasurer. It takes courage to turn toward what is happening. In 2019 John became an active volunteer with the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. Together with his respirologist, Dr. Gokul Vidyasankar, these two dedicated men formed a provincial support group for patients and families affected with progressive lung disease. To Dr. Vidyasankar for your professionalism, your compassion, and your concern for John's well-being, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We were blessed to have you on this journey with us. To Gerri Murphy RN, thank you. Thank you to the staff and residents of Lanes Retirement Living where John and Mary resided for the past month. All of you made our lives so much easier. Resting at Carnell's Funeral home, 329 Freshwater Road on Monday, October 4th from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. and Tuesday, October 5th from 2:00 - 7:00 p.m. Funeral service to take place at the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on Wednesday, October 6th at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. HUNT, Brendan
Published: October 05, 2021

After having had a construction or renovation project on the go for most of his life, Brendan Hunt of Holyrood spent a few days overlooking the construction site outside the Health Science complex, where he passed away contentedly on October 2, 2021. He was predeceased by his parents, Frances and Daniel Hunt, (and his parents-in-law, James and Bridget Ryan), his brother John (who recently passed away in Boston), and by his brother and sister-in-law, John and Anita Veitch. Left behind to celebrate his awesome life are his partners in all things great and small, his wife Marie (Ryan); his sons: Ryan and Cherri-Lee (Doyle) and his granddaughters Caitlin, Natalie, and Anna; David; John and Danielle (Winsor); Aaron; his daughter Claire and Michael (Finigan) and three more granddaughters Alice, Olivia, and Darcy; his sister Anne and Keith Peddle; brother Dan and Georgina Hunt and their family, brother-in-law Jim and Gail Ryan and their family; Marie Hunt and her children in Boston; Martha Ryan in Boston; special cousins Evelyn Devereaux and Mona Dooley; the Maloney family, especially Loretta (Mom Maloney) and Alice, Michele, Raylene, and Sandy; Father Ken Walsh; a crowd of special friends from Holyrood: Ted and Sharon Kirby (Edmonton), Mary Hickey and Walter Mogridge (Hamilton), Brendan and Debbie Veitch, Anne Flynn, Jim and Anita Lewis, Bob and Marion Alcock, Walter and Lynn Quinlan, Bernadette and Jim Myers; a special group of fellow travellers and kindred spirits in all things entertaining: Cynthia Mills, Janine and Craig Pike, Imelda and Alex Winsor, and Wanda and Noel Hand; and Daphne Cole. The list could be endless with all the employees, colleagues in the financial industry, friends, cousins, and people who came into his life in the many capacities in which he served and because of the many "hats" he wore. He was, first of all, a businessman who established First Atlantic Financial in 1992. He held his battle with cancer at bay long enough to see his achievement of expanding First Atlantic into Ontario with the opening of First Atlantic Private Wealth this August. While he loved his chosen career, he also was drawn to building and renovating, first his over 100-year old family home in Holyrood, and then the heritage home that now houses First Atlantic Financial. He also expanded that property to include The Tea Garden restaurant which kept him busy until he acquired the Carroll property in Holyrood and turned it into a B&B complex. A consummate story-teller, he spent his evenings entertaining the visitors with his tales, quenching anyone's thirst for the history of the area and all its colourful characters. Brendan also found time to serve on Holyrood Town Council and was a member of Holy Cross Parish's board of administration, helping especially with financial matters and renovations. True to form, he was involved in the church and community centre renovations and he was instrumental in getting the festival grounds established in it's current form on the beach. No matter where he went, something was built, changed, or expanded. He has left behind gardens for his family and friends to enjoy while they are recalling his stories and funny sayings, his tales of his many travels, or his love of country music, cooking up a good scoff, and calling the crowd together. Opportunities to visit and say farewell will be at Dunphy's Funeral Home, Holyrood, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday October 4, 2021 and Tuesday, October 5, 2021. His private funeral, due to COVID restrictions, will take place at Holy Cross Church, Holyrood, on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. Because we would dearly love to have all of you with us, the funeral will be live streamed for those who would like to join us. If you wish, donations in his memory may be made to The Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre or Holy Cross Restoration Fund or you may do something of your own choosing. Please visit www.dunphys.ca to sign the Memorial guest book.

HUNT, Margaret (Mick) Laura

Predeceased by her husband John Lindhal (Lin) in 1967, Mick never remarried. She leaves Judie (Michael Quebec) in White Rock, BC and Doug (Jane) and two lovely granddaughters, Holly and Caitlin, in Sydney, Australia. Mick was born in St. John's on March 11, 1935 to Frank and Nina Bennett (née Crosbie), and passed at Karwood Retirement Home in Paradise, with friends and family at her side. Mick spoke often, and fondly, of the parties and get-togethers with a large, extended family over many year, recounting colourful stories about the continual hijinks with the cousins in her early years, the many holiday and summer gatherings as time passed, and the family support she always felt. Mick had a great sense of humour, and proved often to be the life of a party. She was a proud Newfoundlander, admiring the many talents in the province, enjoying camping, drives in the country and picnics overlooking icebergs, and talking about politics. A life-long dog lover, Mick was an ardent volunteer with the SPCA, fostering many rescued dogs, and providing a loving home to others. Over the years, Mick made a number of friends and, while many are now gone, she had strong bonds and caring, close friendships. Judie and Doug thank the kind, caring staff at Karwood (with special appreciation to Gary and his wife, Vicki), and are grateful for the kindness, love and patience given by the family, particularly Dorian Rowe and Beep Ayre, who were located closer to Mom. KNIGHT, Mildred
Published: October 09, 2021
1927 - 2021

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother Mildred Knight, age 94, on October 6, 2021. Pre-deceased by her husband of 73 years, Albert; mother and father Alfreda and Herbert Newell. Mom passed peacefully at home, which was her wish, after a brief illness, with her daughters by her side. She was a wonderful Mother, Grandmother, Aunt and a friend to many. Mom was a very giving person as well; making bread and cakes to bring to her friends in her community or to those in need. That continued well into her aging years when she would do the same with her neighbors in the apartment complex where she lived and made friends. Mom loved to watch cooking shows until she got sick; her favorite one being Trisha Yearwood's. She loved to cook and try new recipes. We knew she was watching when we would get a call to pick up ingredients! In her early eighties, mom left the country for the first time and went on a cruise with one of her daughters. It must have been amazing to her to see other parts of the world. It was only about a week before she died that she mentioned the tablecloths she bought in Costa Rica! Mom's mind was sharp until the end, although she couldn't communicate very well. She was aware that she was going to pass, and being a woman of great faith, she was ready to meet her Lord and enter heaven. Mom leaves behind six children - Geraldine, Shirley (Bill), Barbara, Owen (Norma), Vera, and Janet, who will mourn their loss tremendously; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren, who she was always very interested in what they were doing in their lives; Special Sister-in-Law Vera Staubitzer; as well as many nieces and nephews. Our family would also like to thank the following: John and Cathy Durdle, superintendents of moms apartment complex, who went above and beyond and were always there to help mom and dad with anything they needed over the years; Aggie Connors who was a wonderful companion to mom when short respite periods were required; Dr. Stacey Wareham-Fowler who showed much compassion to Mom and called her in between appointments to see how she was doing. Cremation has taken place and a family service will be held at a later date. A donation in Mom's memory may be made to The Gathering Place.

MURLEY, Samuel Roy Macpherson
Published: October 16, 2021

Born October 13, 1927 in St. John's, Newfoundland. Died October 12, 2021 in Bedford, Nova Scotia, just hours before his 94th birthday. Roy leaves the love of his life and wife, Cynthia, his children William (Deborah), Anne (late husband Robert) and Susan (Craig), as well as grandchildren David (Jazz), Katherine, Colin (Jamie), Jonathan and great-grandchildren Eli and Ivy. He was predeceased by sister Edna and brother Donald. Roy and Cynthia were married for 70 wonderful, joyful years, from 1951 to 2021, and their love burned just as strong at the end of their marriage as at the beginning. To their family and those close to them, their relationship was a model for what a marriage could be. They were equal partners, raising their children, comforting each other during tough times, going on adventures and hikes together and always enjoying life. They were true friends as well as husband and wife. His children and grandchildren knew that he loved them fiercely and that he would do anything for them. Roy spent his childhood as a minister's son, living in Victoria, Fortune, Bonavista and Botwood in Newfoundland, where he learned the values of hard work, honesty and kindness. He attended Mount Allison University, graduating in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science, and after working for a few years, went to McGill University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Engineering in 1951. At the Bowater pulp and paper mill in Corner Brook, Roy was the first Newfoundlander to become Mill Manager in charge of all operations, a position that he held for 10 years. His colleagues in the office and on the mill floor trusted and admired him, knowing that he would always treat them honestly and with respect. In 1988, shortly after his retirement, the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador honoured him with the Award of Merit, given each year to one person to recognize exceptional achievements. Roy loved being out with Cynthia, his family and friends, exploring the awe-inspiring mountains and coasts of Newfoundland as well as places far from home. Nature was his "happy place" and his relief from the stress of his job. His curiosity about the world was also reflected in his love of reading, and their home was full of books. A natural athlete who excelled at tennis and hockey, he would spring up slopes like a mountain goat and was fearless for his own safety. He would stand at the side of cliffs and was on the roof removing ice well into his late eighties. He downhill skied until the age of 88 and was chopping wood until he was 91, when Parkinson's disease began to rob him of his ability to be active. Most of all, Roy was a sweet, kind, generous man. He loved to laugh, to have a party, and just enjoy life. He was known for his honesty, his modesty and for his deep concern for those around him. He held fast to his values and never compromised on doing what he thought was right. Even when Parkinson's disabled him severely, he never complained and remained thankful for everything people did for him. He was truly a good man. Thanks to the staff at the Bedford Berkeley and the Bedford campus of Northwood for their kindness and support during the final years of Roy's life. A memorial service will be held at Bedford United Church, 1200 Bedford Highway, on November 1 at 1:30 p.m. Donations can be made to the Nature Conservancy of Canada (Newfoundland and Labrador). Fond memories and expressions of sympathy can be shared with the family by visiting www.jasnowfuneralhome.com

Miss Me - But Let Me GO "When I come to the end of the road and the sun has set for me, I want no tears or gloom-filled room. Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little but not for long, and not with head bowed low. Remember the love we all shared, miss me - but let me go. For this is a journey we all must take, and each must go alone. It's all part of the Master's plan, a step on the road to home. When you are lonely and sick of heart, see family and friends we know. Take time to heal, tho' we must part, miss me - but let me go…"

RENDELL, Wallace
Published: October 08, 2021

Wallace died peacefully with family at his side in St. John's. Recently, he was hiking in his hometown, Heart's Content, with his soulmate of 48 years, Shirley. At his insistence, there is to be no fanfare, no hyperbole. Just the facts. This is true to his nature. He was shaped, in part, by his birth in a simpler time and place - a place where, in the winter, mail arrived in the village drawn over the snowy barrens by horse-drawn sleigh, and a time when news of the world was tippy-tapped through his parents' fingers via the Trans-Atlantic cable. Yet, he led an extraordinary life: as a respected doctor of internal medicine; as a scholar, writer, and poet; as an athlete, world-traveller, and adventurous sailor; and as a supportive, loving, and generous father to a large, growing family. From the first encyclopaedias he received as a boy, he pursued knowledge and understanding of consciousness, nature, and the universe with wide-eyed enthusiasm, always encouraging others to do the same, always through the lens of rational thought. But don't be fooled; he was also prone to dance, to spontaneously bursting into song, to obsessive berry-picking, and to celebrating friends and family. We hope you knew him. If not, we hope you meet someone like him on your journey. If you do, hold on tight to that positive light. Wallace was the youngest child of Charles and Clare (nee Baggs). He was pre-deceased by older siblings Charles, Hazel (Goodridge), and Shirley (Vacca). He leaves with his love, Shirley, sons and daughters Stephen, Charles, Susan, Graham, Lianne, Karen, and Wallace Jr., a wealth of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews, John, Caroline (Little), Christine (Wilson), and Geoff (Vacca). A celebration of his life, and opportunity to share stories, will be announced for the spring or summer of 2022, in Heart's Content.

Lee met his wife, Martha (Hawke), in Lausanne, Switzerland when they were both 17 and they enjoyed over 50 wonderful years together. They shared a love of traveling, entertaining, fishing, and reading. Lee and Martha enjoyed vacationing with their family and friends, exemplified by the beautiful memories that were made at the White Sails Inn in Eastport. Family was incredibly important to him, and he treasured being surrounded by loved ones especially at their regular Sunday dinners. Lee was an exceptional Father and Grandfather. Despite his busy business schedule, he always made time for his children. He was incredibly proud of his children and adored the role of "Grandpa". Lee graduated initially from the University of Toronto and continued at the London School of Business and the Institute of Corporate Directors. Lee always valued education and continued to take on new learning opportunities throughout his life. Lee was a business leader in Atlantic Canada for over 50-years in the insurance, oil and gas, research, innovation, and mining industries. Outside of his business interests Lee was engaged in numerous volunteer and board activities, including the Crosbie Group of Companies, Genoa Design International, Memorial University of NL, Engineering and Applied Sciences Advisory Council, Newfoundland Ocean Industries Association (NOIA), St. John's Board of Trade, and the Genesis Centre. Lee was an industry leader who excelled at business development and who was happy to pass on his expertise to the next generation of business leaders in our province. Throughout his life, Lee was honored with numerous awards, including being recognized as a Top 50 CEO in Atlantic Canada, as well as in the oil and gas sector in NL. Additionally, he was honored to receive the Queen's Jubilee Medal, and the NOIA Outstanding Contribution Award. Recently, Lee was touched by a scholarship recognizing his achievements by Genoa Design International; named the "Lee Shinkle Think Big Scholarship". Lee was a lifelong coach, teacher, and mentor. He enjoyed nothing more than passing knowledge to his children, grandchildren and to the next generation at large.
