WATSON, M. Edwina (Emerson) - M. Edwina Watson died September 21, 2004, in the home of her daughter, in Buffalo, NY. She was the wife of the late Colonel Robert J.; beloved mother of Colonel James E. (Phyllis); Dr. Mary E. (Jan) Watson-Stribula; Patricia E. (Gail Graham Jr.); and Robert E.; grandmother of Robert Jess, Wesley Jess, and Danielle Watson; Jessica Stribula and Laura (Chris) Morgado; Anna-Beth Meyer -Graham.
Born in St. John's, Newfoundland in 1921, she was the daughter of Sir Edward and Lady Ruby (Ayre) Emerson. Mrs. Watson was educated in England by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart, and in France at the Sorbonne. When war broke out, she returned to St. John's and worked as a cipher for the Royal Navy. Her father, Chief Justice of Newfoundland and Commissioner for Defence, signed the lend-lease agreements allowing American aircraft and personnel to utilize Newfoundland's military installations to facilitate crossing the North Atlantic to Europe during World War II. As the war effort continued, it was Mrs. Watson's observation that American servicemen were friendlier than the British, in that they always offered visitors a drink. In fact, she met her future husband when he was stationed in St. John's as a navigator with the Army Air Corps.
The Watsons settled in Hempstead, Long Island, where Mrs. Watson was a leader in many community activities, including fund raising, PTA, and as a member of Our Lady of Loretto Roman Catholic Church. She was an avid bridge player and prolific knitter. Her husband was an educator who taught math and Latin and was principal of several Long Island schools.
In 1978, they retired to North Carolina, and Mrs. Watson was very active at St. John's Parish in Tryon, as well as a volunteer at St. Luke's Hospital. In 1999, she moved to Buffalo.
A Mass of Christian burial was held at Holy Angels Church on Saturday, September 25th. The family requests memorial donations to Holy Angels Church, 348 Porter Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14201 in lieu of flowers.
