FOOTPRINTS
One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, one belonging to him and the other to the Lord. When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life. This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it. "Lord, You said that once I decided to follow You, You'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why, when I needed You most You would leave me." The Lord replied, "My son, My precious child, I love you and would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."

DEORKSEN - Jacob D. - With much sadness the family announces the death of Jake Deorksen on September 24, 2006. He was born on August 9, 1923 on the family farm in southern Manitoba. In his early years he experienced the transition of agriculture in Canada from essentially pre-industrial practices to full mechanization. In 2002 he would publish The Barbed Wire Threshold, an intimate account of these times focused on the life of his father and mother.
In 1943, Jake broke with Mennonite tradition and volunteered for the Royal Canadian Navy. He served in the Battle of the Atlantic, notably on the corvette HMCS Kamsack, until the end of the war. The sense of commitment and camaraderie in the Navy at war was a defining experience for him, and he maintained contact with his fellow veterans as an active member of the Vancouver Naval Veterans Association in his later life. In 1945, he obtained leave to marry Leona Brown, and their marriage would last for 61 loving years and produce four children.
After several years of farming after the war, Jake went into management in the retail co-operative movement. This career took the family to a variety of locales including Grandview and Morden Manitoba, Edmonton Alberta, and Grand Falls and St. John's Newfoundland. By 1975 he had become a recognized expert in this field, and he was engaged by the United Nations International Labour Office to provide advice in developing countries. This led to memorable years in a number of countries including India, Indonesia and Botswana, during which time he re-wrote the ILO manual for retail cooperative management, a document distributed worldwide. Jake and Lee were inveterate travelers and made it a point to travel extensively, take in the culture of their host countries and receive numerous visitors from home. For the last 19 years they made their home in Vancouver, developing many new friendships and repeatedly solving the world's problems with their Granville Island coffee group. Jake and Lee enjoyed entertaining, and the memories of many will turn to the numerous dinners and open houses that they hosted.
Throughout his life, Jake was favoured with good health, but the last several months were trying as he battled bone cancer. The family would like to acknowledge the excellent care that he received through the public health care system, with special thanks to the staff at the Pacific Spirit Community Health Centre and St. Paul's Hospital. He is survived by his wife Lee, his daughters Audrey and Cristina and sons Tom and Kern. Of his 10 brothers and sisters, he is survived by Louise, Fred and Anne, and the families of Bertha, Kate, Henry, Sadie, Herman, Mary and Martha. He will also be remembered by his grandchildren Anita, Carol, Daniel, Jacob, Joanne, Kayla, Shane and Zachary, his great-grandchildren Andy, Brandon, Charles, Ellie, Jonathon, Katie, Melanie and Rory, and a wide circle of extended family and friends.
There will be a private family memorial at First Memorial Funeral Services in Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the B.C. Cancer Foundation or a charity of choice.

KEATING, William Calvin (Bill) - It is with deep sadness that the family of Bill Keating of Ottawa, Ontario, announce his passing on September 16, 2006, at the age of 56. He leaves behind, with precious memories, his loving wife and caregiver for the past 14 months, Donna (Messervey), his daughter Trinda (Mark de Grandpre) and his son Bill Jr. (Jennifer Bond). He also leaves the light in his life for the past year, his precious granddaughter, Mya Grace de Grandpre. He is survived by his parents, Richard and Rita Keating of Stephenville, Newfoundland, his four brothers, Colin (Iona) and Rick of Edmonton, Alberta, Glen of Ottawa, Ontario, and Ken (Melinda Jesso) of Stephenville, his three sisters, Julia (Gordon Keating-Brown) of Ottawa, Ontario, Terri (Rosaire Cote) of Stephenville, and Glenda (Larry Hann) of St. John's, Newfoundland. He is fondly remembered by his two sisters-in-law Sandra (William) Caines of Toronto and Trinda Messervey of New Westminster, BC. He leaves behind uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends throughout Canada, the United States, and Saudi Arabia. In his 56 years, Bill did more than most of us dream of in a lifetime. His professional life in the telecommunications field took him from various parts of Newfoundland to Ottawa and on to Saudi Arabia. During his stay in Saudi Arabia he fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a master scuba diver and went on to become licensed as a Scuba Diver Instructor. This designation allowed him to train several groups of divers in the Middle East including United States Marines. This new skill was something Bill was extremely proud of and he had hoped to continue this type of work upon his retirement.
Cremation in Ottawa, and a memorial service is planned for Bill in Stephenville, Newfoundland on September 30, 2006 at St. Stephen's Church at 11 a.m. The family will receive relatives and friends at Russell's Funeral Home, on Friday, September 29 from 5 - 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to The Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital Foundation, 142 Minnesota Drive, Stephenville NL A2N 2V6 would be greatly appreciated by the family. www.healthwest.nf.ca/partnersincare-foundations-strhf-about.htm

SIMON, Neal Philip Perry, Ph.D. - Our broken hearts still beat, but our lives have been forever changed. On Saturday, September 23rd, life as we knew it was forever changed when our most precious son, brother, fiancée, nephew, grandson, Neal Philip Perry Simon, Ph.D., of Happy Valley-Goose Bay lost his life through a tragic boating accident. Neal was born in Labrador City on December 30, 1973. During his short life, Neal lived his life to the fullest and had many achievements. His entire family was extremely proud of him. Neal loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman, hunter and environmentalist. He also had a very unique sense of humour which was endearing to everyone who knew him. He appreciated help from Albert and Brenda (A & B Construction) and his Dad (Julian Lake Wood Products) for doing "free" renovations for him. Neal will be sadly missed by his fianc Leanne Elson; Mom (Doreen) and Dad (Dave); sister Nicole; grandparents: Gordon and Carrie Templeman (Momma and Gan-Gan), Albert and Brenda Elson, Brian Elson, Ruth and Edward Maidment; and uncles: Len Templeman (Olive), Gordie Templeman (Sandra), Henry Simon ( Michelle), Wayne Simon (Marilyn); aunts: Leona (Phil Gillingham), Irene Barter, Roslyn (Greg Gosse), Peggy Templeman (Pat Marrie), Lisa, Curtis and Tara Saunders; and many close relatives and friends especially high school buddies Colin Carroll, Kieren Furlong, Blair Barry, Chris Bishop, Kory Pike, Andy Brothers, Ed Pretty and many others too numerous to mention. Also mourning his great loss are his many colleagues at the Department of Natural Resources in Goose Bay and Wabush. Neal had many friends from his university days at MUN, UNB, etc. His loyal canine buddy "Boss" will miss Neal - they were true buddies in every sense of the word. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Fillatre's Funeral Home, 45 Aspen Drive, in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Funeral will be conducted by Rev. Jennifer Gosse of St. Andrew's Anglican Church with the service taking place in the Pentecostal Church, Happy Valley-Goose Bay at 3 p.m., Thursday, September 28.
