ADAMS, William (Bill) James - Passed as peacefully away as he had lived his life, at the age of 92, only ten years short of his targeted 102 years, William James Adams of St. John's. Left to mourn his parting and to celebrate the strength, joy, love, and compassion that he offered all those who touched his life: his sons Paul (Heather Skanes), Gerard (Joan Barrett) and Tony (Kelly Burton), grandchildren Riley, Joel, Kieran, Jennifer, Matthew, Kathleen and Carolyn, and great-grandchildren, Sam, Adelaide and Imogen Moss, Miles and Grant MacDonald, and Audrey Adams, along with his special friend Sheila Vincent, brother-in-law Bert Hannaford and a goodly number of nieces, nephews and friends. Bill is predeceased by his first wife, and mother of their children, Kathleen (Hannaford), his second wife Joan (Maddigan-Healey), and his two brothers John and Michael. He will always be remembered for his teaching and example... his good nature and his smile. We are most fortunate to have had him, and all that he was, with us for so long. Much good will live on because of him. Resting at Caul's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road on Sunday and Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. from Corpus Christi Church, internment to follow at Holy Sepulchre cemetery. AYLWARD (nee Hearn), Diane - Passed peacefully away at home in St. John's on Wednesday September 16, 2015. Predeceased by her father James Hearn; mother Rose Hearn (nee Cahill) and brothers Wayne and Michael.Leaving to mourn her beloved husband William (Bill) of 48 years; her devoted children, daughters Tracey (Terry Mahon) and Jody (Bill Comerford) and son Gregory (Vicky Chen); her three precious grandchildren Samuel, Sarah Rose and Jane who meant the world to her. Also leaving to mourn are her sisters Theresa Walsh (Tom), Mary Lou; brothers Pat (Leona), Jerome (Marilyn) and John; sister-in-law Shirley Walsh; her favorite nephew Tommy and a large circle of family and friends. Special thanks to the Health Sciences Center Palliative Care Team and Dr. Craig McIsaac. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at Caul's Funeral Home LeMarchant Road on Friday September 18, from 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place from St. Patrick's Parish at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2015. AYLWARD, Meagan Alice - (March 7th, 1987 - September 14th, 2015) - Passed peacefully away on September 14, 2015 at the Health Sciences Centre, surrounded by family and friends. Leaving to mourn her spouse Alvin Banfield; father Larry Aylward; sisters Breanne Aylward and Brittney Aylward; brother MattyAylward; mother Cathy Caul; grandparents Bernice and Larry Aylward and Jim and Alice Caul; Very special aunt Shelly Aylward (Sean Murphy); her very special friend Veronica Chipman as well as a long list of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. BAILEY, David Robert - Passed peacefully away at Lanark Heights Long Term Care, Kitchener, Ontario on September 24, 2015, Dave Bailey, age 70. Predeceased by his mother Rita (1976), his brothers Wayne (Bonnie) 2005 and George (Barb) 2013, his brother-in-law Pat (Helen) Hearn and father George. Left to mourn his beloved wife of over 40 years Beverly. Dear father of Heather McCann, loving grandfather of Vincent, Sarah, Kayla and great-grandfather of Dakota. Also leaving to mourn his sisters Helen (Torbay), Elsie, Liz (Dave) Antle, Terri and brother Ed (Dot) all living in St. John's, very special family friend Betty Smith, his sisters-in-law Bonnie Bailey (St. John's) and Barb Bailey (Sault Ste. Marie, ON), many nieces and nephews in Ontario, Saskatchewan, Calgary and Newfoundland with extended family and friends in Newfoundland and Ontario. BAILEY, Mildred Lilian - Passed peacefully away on September 26, 2015 at the age of 95 years. Predeceased by her parents Richard Pierce Bailey and Mary Ellen Bailey; two brothers Victor and Herbert Bailey; her good friend and companion Chester MacDonald; her beloved son David Bailey; her dear granddaughter Leah Bailey Powers; and her nephew Pierce Bailey. Leaving to mourn her sister Ella Johnson in New Zealand; daughter-in-law Patricia Powers and her granddaughters Eva Powers Browne and Mary Fischer; special nieces: Dianne Bailey, Susan Bailey and Mary Johnston; special nephews: Victor Bailey and Brian Johnston plus other nephews and nieces and their families; cousin Ivy Rowe as well as many friends, among whom were two special persons, Pam Bruce and Helen Walsh, who were very devoted to Mildred over the past number of years. Mildred's interests were varied - she was especially interested in gardening and the growing of flowers for flower arranging. She was a long-time member of the Newfoundland Horticultural Society and founding member of the Floral Art Group (now Floral Design Group) holding various offices over the years. Mildred was devoted to her family and friends and in later years kept in touch with many of them via e-mail. Special thanks to the 3 West staff at Chancellor Park for their care and kindness. BAKER (nee Benson), Lillian "Peggy" - It is with broken hearts and profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Peggy passed peacefully away at her home on September 25, 2015 at the age of 72. Predeceased by her husband Doug Baker (May 2, 2014) Leaving to mourn; her daughters Carolyn Chard (Randy), Cindy McGrath (Gerry) and son Doug (Cindy), grandchildren; Bradley, Krystle, and Samantha. She will also be greatly missed by her brothers, sisters, relatives, and friends. BASSETT, Anna Josephine - Passed peacefully away at St. Patrick's Mercy Home on September 12, 2015 at the age of 94 years. Predeceased by her parents James and Anna Bassett; sisters Marion Bassett, Dorothea Bailey, Mary Molloy (Peter), and Katherine Breen (Peter); brother James (Claudine); and nephews David Bassett and Peter Breen Jr. Left to celebrate her life is her brother-in-law Don Bailey; nephews Wilf Casey (Elizabeth - Deceased), Kevin (Cathy) Breen, John (Eleanor) Breen, Noel (Patsy) Breen, and Danny (Ann) Breen; nieces Judy (Arnie) Furlong, Bibby (Pat) Dempsey, Mary Lou (Rod) Hall, Mary (Randy) Purchase, Dot (Craig) MacLaughlan, Cathy (Ian) Steer, and Jane Paxton-Bassett; 25 great-nieces and nephews, including Kelly Ann Breen who provided special care to Anna; 17 great-great-nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends. BECK (nee Brinston), Mary Netha (Neta) - (September 17th, 1925 - September 24th, 2015)
Passed peacefully away at G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital, one week after celebrating her 90th birthday, Neta Beck of Swift Current.Predeceased by her husband Calvin; brothers Earnest, Earl, Joseph, and Wallace; sisters Ada, Stella and Lillian. Left to celebrate a wonderful life lived is a wide circle of relatives and friends as well as staff and residents of Hilltop Manor in Arnold's Cove. Neta will be resting at United Church Swift Current, with visitation on Saturday, September 26 from 11 am - 4 pm and 7-9 pm; Sunday from 11 am - 1 pm. Funeral service to take place at the United Church on Sunday at 2 pm; interment to follow at United Church Cemetery in Swift Current. BENNETT, Edward - Passed peacefully away on September 27, 2015 at the Health Science Centre, age 89 years. Predeceased by his parents John and Veronica. BRENNAN, Wade - Passed away after a tragic accident on Saturday, September 19, 2015. Wade James Brennan, age 54 years. BROWN (nee Thomson), Janet (1939-2015) - It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Janet Craig Brown, peacefully at St. Patrick's Mercy Home on September 17th, 2015. Jan grew up in Scotland, where she studied nursing, and met the love of her life, Dr. Colin Mackenzie Brown. Together with their five children, Jan and Colin immigrated to Newfoundland in 1974. For over thirty years, Jan was a dedicated nurse in Glasgow, Greenock and St. John's. Throughout her life, Jan was a devoted wife, a loving mother and a loyal friend. Her sense of humour and her irrepressible zest for life made her a joy to be around. She will be deeply missed by many. Leaving to mourn are her: daughter Karen Howse (David); her sons David (the late Roberta), Kevin (Maureen) and Stephen (Gina); her grandchildren Alex, Ian, Fiona, Joshua, Will, Kate, Michael and Sean; her sister Margaret Thomson (Jim), her sisters-in-law Cathie (the late Angus) and Margaret Shackleton (Bill) and her brother-in-law Jim (Eileen), and cousins Allison Ash (the late Evan) and Heather Thomson as well as a large circle of treasured friends. BUCKLEY (nee Smith), Laura Anita - (Born on October 8th, 1927 and passed away on September 30th, 2015 - Passed away at her home surrounded by family. Predeceased by husband William and daughters Joan, Janet and Karen.Leaving to mourn daughters Florence, Daphne, Christine and Sharon and son Rick.Also, many grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Cremation has already taken place with no wake or service at Mom's request.
She is now at rest and in God's care.

BUCKLEY (nee Blackmore), Rita Isabel Age 83 of Toms River, passed away Sunday, September. 6, 2015. Rita was born in Grand Falls, Newfoundland, Canada. She studied nursing at The Sisters of Mercy, St. Claire's Mercy Hospital in St. John's Newfoundland where she received her Registered Nursing Degree. She worked as an RN for 45 years, retiring in 2000. Rita was a private duty nurse for many years and also worked at Community Memorial and Point Pleasant Hospitals as well as the NJ Dept. of Human Services, Division of Developmental Disabilities. She became a Naturalized US citizen on May 26, 1964 and was a resident of Toms River since 1960. Rita was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church where she was active with the Perpetual Adoration Chapel. Rita was predeceased by her parents James and Josephine Hamilton Blackmore, her son, Francis 'Mike' Buckley, brothers, Raymond Joseph, James, and Reverend Father Matthew Blackmore, sisters, Alice Andrews, Mary Norgang, Lillian Hodgins, Theresa Boreski and Sheila Nickiforuk. Surviving are her daughters, Margaret Buckley, Toms River, Maura A. Buckley, Egg Harbor Twp.; grandchildren, Tabitha Pavoni and husband Dan of Brick, Talia and Ryan Pisciotta of Manchester, Sarah Rose Votto of Toms River; great-grandchildren, Tyler Pavoni of Brick, Emma Pisciotta; brother Cyril Blackmore and wife Monica of Grand Falls, Windsor; and many nieces, nephews and extended family. Visitation will be held Monday from 6-9 pm at Kedz Funeral Home, 1123 Hooper Ave, Toms River. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 am Tuesday at St. Joseph's Church, Hooper Ave, Toms River. BUTLER (nee Seward), Olga Blanche - Passed peacefully away at the St. John's Long Term Health Care Facility on Tuesday, September 22, 2015, Olga Blanche Butler, age 91 years. Predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Clementine Seward; siblings: Elsie, Simeon, Edmund and Eric; first husband, Vincent Fitzgerald; daughter, Geraldine Kavanagh; second husband, John Butler; step-son, Glenn Butler; and brother, Hayward Seward. CHURCHILL (nee Vincent), Jeanette - (September 26th, 1947 - September 26th, 2015) - It is with great sadness that the family of Jeanette Churchill announces her passing on September 26, 2015 in Ottawa, ON. Jeanette passed peacefully at home surrounded by the love of her family following a short illness. She leaves many wonderful memories to her loving husband Howie, her daughters Sarah (Matthew) and Julia (Simon) and her cherished grandchildren Hannah and Jonah. Also left to mourn are her brother Clyde (Jean) and sister Judy (Harry), niece Jennifer (Scott & Bella) and nephew Patrick. Jeanette was predeceased by her parents Jack & Nellie Vincent and niece Heather. She will be missed by many friends and family members. The family gives heartfelt thanks to the palliative care team of doctors, nurses and support workers who gave Jeanette tender and loving care. Profound gratitude to Dr. Lisa Aldridge. Jeanette was a beloved, courageous and gracious soul who had a zest for all things beautiful. CLARKE, Clarence - Passed peacefully at the Caribou Memorial Veteran's Pavilion on September 3, 2015 at aged 91 years. Formerly of Dunfield, Trinity Bay. He is predeceased by his wife, Phyllis in 2002, daughter Donna in 1980 and daughter, Glenda in 1949. Leaves to mourn his son, Randy (Sharon) and daughters, Christine (Chesley), Stephanie (Rick), Julia (Wilson), Glenice (Ken) and Karen (Steve) as well as 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Clarence is a veteran of the Second World War having served with the Royal British Navy's Rescue Tug Service. He worked with the provincial government for 29 years before retiring in 1988. Following his retirement he pursued his gardening and carpentry hobbies. He loved spending time in his two greenhouses or in his workshop above his garage building things. A special thank you to the wonderful staff at the Caribou Memorial Veteran's Pavilion where Dad spent his final year, dancing, baking, playing darts, bowling and whatever activity was offered. CLARKE, Maisie Lorraine - (Born in Clarke's Beach, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada on: October 1st, 1938 and passed  away in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada on September 11th, 2015
It is with great sadness that the family of Lorraine Clarke announces her passing on September 11, 2015 at Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook, surrounded by her loving family. She will be deeply missed by her two sons Scott and Jonathan; daughter Laura Harris (Paul), and two special grandchildren, Ben and Maya. Lorraine was predeceased by her loving husband of 50 years, Donald. Also left to mourn are her mother Enid Jerrett of Clarke's Beach; sisters Jean Rex (Jerry), Susan Quinlan (Phil); brothers Eric Jerrett (Betty), Fred Jerrett (Linda), and Bob Jerrett (Elaine), as well as aunts, cousins and numerous nieces and nephews who cherished "Aunt Lorraine" dearly. Lorraine was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, a loyal friend, and a dedicated teacher. She was renown for her kind and giving nature and demonstrated a spirit of perseverance, grace and dignity that was truly inspiring. She was born in Clarke's Beach, Newfoundland and as the eldest of seven siblings quickly became a mother figure to her younger brothers and sisters. Lorraine, or "Maisie" as she was then known, demonstrated her book smarts at an early age, completing high school at the tender age of 14. After high school she moved to St. John's to study Secretarial Sciences, quickly joined the workforce and helped contribute to her family back home. After marrying and eventually settling in Corner Brook, she attained her Education degree while raising a young family. She went on to become a long-time instructor at the former Vocational School (currently known as the College of the North Atlantic). After retirement, Lorraine continued to live life to the fullest and enjoyed travelling, tending to her garden, and spending time with family and friends. She touched the lives of those she met and many will miss her warmth and generosity. As per Lorraine's wishes cremation has taken place. Martha's significant contributions in the areas of healthcare, education, the arts, heritage, and politics were recognized in 2008 when she was awarded both, the Rotary Club's Paul Harris Fellowship and The Governor General's Caring Canadian Award. Always quick with a laugh, and strong with an opinion, Martha had a terrific zest for life, and embodied a wonderful spirit of dedicated selflessness. Her fun and infectious nature attracted many life- long friends, all of whom would have experienced the warmth of her renowned hand-written letters. She was truly a class act, full of grace and wit, and will be deeply missed by us all. Cremation of Martha and her beloved "Onyx" has taken place. She was a classic lady known for her keen sense of fashion. DOODY, Myles Joseph - (April 29th, 1928 - September 7th, 2015) - Age 87, of Halifax, born April 29, 1928, in St. John's, Newfoundland, died Labour Day, Monday, September 7, 2015 at the Abbie J. Lane Hospital, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Myles graduated from Nova Scotia Technical College/Memorial University, in 1952, with a Bachelor of Engineering degree (electrical engineering). As an employee of Nova Scotia Power, he served for 32 years, before his retirement in 1992. The 26th Halifax, St. Agnes, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, Group Committee kept Mr. Doody involved in the local scouting community for 30 years between 1975 and 2005. He also volunteered at St. Agnes Parish. During the winter months, he kept fit by skating at St. Mary's and curling. Myles also played weekly bridge and enjoyed daily crossword puzzles. He used to enjoy swimming at the Halifax Waegwoltic Club over the summer months. He also participated in bowling leagues with his wife. He kept in touch with his Newfoundland heritage and always felt that joining confederation in 1949 was good for both Newfoundland and Canada. Myles and his wife Virginia (Toni) had just celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on August 21, 2015. He will always be remembered for his kindness, generosity, peace making qualities and a nice smile. He is survived by his wife Virginia (Toni), four sons: Jim (Carol), granddaughter Charlotte, Calgary, John (Debbie), grandsons Patrick and Lucas, of Yellowknife, NT, David (Irene), Cottam, Ontario, and Brian of London, Ontario. He was predeceased by his mother Mary, brother Bill, sister Helen (Wadden), and son Gregory (1967). Betty was born in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada to Marion and Thomas Ryan on Sept 27, 1949. She moved to Annapolis, MD in 1976 and later to Jupiter, FL which has been her home for the last 21 years. Betty loved to read, watch movies and spend as much time as possible with family and friends. She frequently visited Annapolis to see her true joy, her grandson Ben, whom she showered with love. While she lived in Annapolis she worked for C&P Telephone Company where she gained friendships that are nearly 40 years strong. Christina was born in Canada Harbour, NL to Robert and Eliza (nee Gale) Edgar on March 20, 1922. She was the last surviving member of her family, being predeceased by siblings Jessie (James), Dulcie (Stewart), Edith (Donald), Mary (Ross), Beatrice (Cecil), Joseph (Pauline) and Alma (Kenneth). Christina was also predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert L. Gillard (1987) and son-in-law, Calvin Newman. She will be greatly missed by her children: Maxine (Frank), Robert E. GOEBEL, Maggie (Margarethe) Anne - (August 20th, 1986 - September 25th, 2015) - She passed away very peacefully in her sleep. She was extremely happy when she passed away. Beloved daughter of Martin and Anne Goebel, cherished sister of Emilie Goebel and Johanna Dempster, brother-in-law Laurie Dempster. She's the loved auntie of Robert and Isobel Dempster. Adored by her grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, her many close friends and her perfect English Springer Spaniel, Lilah and everyone she met throughout her life. In the words of her grandmother Omu, "she put the sunshine in the day." To know Maggie was to know life, energy, fun, jokes, boldness and strength. She was an overachiever and a very hardworking beautiful young woman. Her accomplishments are too many to list but include her volunteering trip to Africa and achieving the Gold Standard of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. She was a practising pharmacist who was extremely devoted to her patients. She was known for her creativity and her free spirit. She is a fighter and was winning her battle with mental illness. She will be forever missed. HEDGES, Lockhart - (1918 - 2015) - Passed peacefully away at the Caribou Memorial Veterans Pavilion on September 29, 2015. Lockhart "Lock" Hedges at the age of 97. He was born and raised in Carbonear and served in WWll from 1940 - 1945. He married Leah (Lil) Parsons from Freshwater, Carbonear in 1944 and together they moved to Montreal in 1948 where they lived until they retired and returned to live in St. John's in 1977. HUNT, Eleanor May - The oldest of 9 siblings born January 28, 1927 in Pound Cove to Josephine and George Howell. She married Arthur Hunt and moved to Badgers Quay. They had 8 children. After the passing of her husband she devoted her life to raising her children. In 1973 she moved to Toronto where she lived for 39 years. In 2011 she moved back to Newfoundland with her daughter Shirley and son-in-law Bill whom she lived with for 34 years. In July 2015 she moved into Glenbrook Salvation Army Lodge where she passed away peacefully on September 10, 2015. She is predeceased by her husband Arthur, son Derrick, daughter Maisie, parents Josephine and George Howell. KEILEY, Sister Patricia (Regina) - Passed peacefully away on September 7, 2015 at her Mission house in Marianhill, South Africa at the age of 86. Regina was predeceased by her parents Laurence and Ethel, her sisters Margaret Breen and Agnes Chafe (Kevin - deceased); and her brother Peter. Leaving to mourn are the sisters of the Precious Blood; her brother Laurence (Mary), St. John's; her sisters Jean Heffernan (Pat) and Myna Mulrooney (Des), Goulds; her brother-in-law Gordon Breen; sister-in-law Mary Keiley; many nieces and nephews throughout Newfoundland and Canada; and extended family in the United States. Regina entered the order of the Sisters of the Precious Blood in 1956 in Toronto. Having completed her novitiate in Toronto, she embarked on her mission to South Africa in 1959. Her service as a nurse for the next 55 years in various missions in South Africa was marked by a profound religious faith. Internment at Marianhill, South Africa on Tuesday, September 15, 2015. LEWIS, Kevin Davis - Kevin Davis Lewis, aged 44, passed peacefully away on Monday, September 21st, 2015 in the presence of his loving family and friends. Kevin Jr. is predeceased by his mother Margaret (Peggy), and brothers Chad and baby Lewis. Leaving to mourn are his father Kevin Sr., brother Jonathan (Jordan), aunts Patricia (Harry) Hamlyn, Elaine (Craig, deceased) Dobbin, Maureen (Cyril) Beaton, Godmother Sadie (Ray) O'Brien and uncles Terry (Roberta) Keough, Eugene (Bride) Lewis and Dave (Elizabeth) Lewis, as well as his loving cousins, other family members and friends. As a youth in Labrador City, Kevin was an enthusiastic downhill skier, hockey and badminton player. The Lewis family moved to St. John's in August of 1988 where Kevin attended high school at Gonzaga High, then returned to Labrador City to graduate with his old classmates and friends. Kevin's health difficulties became apparent in 1993 and he was subsequently diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and received the precious gift of a double lung transplant in 1998. IPF had already claimed the lives of his uncle Bill Davis in 1986, his mother Peggy in 1991, and his younger brother Chad would lose his IPF battle in 2002. Once he had recovered from his transplant, Kevin Jr. attended college in St. John's and worked as an IT Support Analyst Specialist first in Halifax and, more recently, at home in St. John's. In recent years Kevin has taken up golf and loved an evening of trouting with his father and friends. He enjoyed annual snowmobile trips with his cousins to the interior of the island, salmon fishing trips to Labrador with Aunt Elaine and his cousins, and day trips with friends on his motorcycle. Most recently, in August, Kevin was the celebrated and very proud flag-bearer and athlete for the Canadian contingent at the World Transplant Games in Argentina. Kevin Jr. loved life and made the most of every moment he was given. He always had a joke to share and a kind or supportive word for anyone in need. He touched innumerable lives in his shortened life. He will be greatly missed. McCARTHY (Healey), Madonna Elizabeth - Born in Fox Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada on December 15th, 1928 and passed away on September 16th, 2015
Passed away on September 16, 2015 at the age of 86 after a brief illness, surrounded by her children. She was born in Fox Harbour, Placentia Bay on December 15, 1928 and graduated from St Clare's School of Nursing in 1949. She lived in Labrador City and Montreal before settling in St John's in 1972. She retired from St Clare's Mercy Hospital in 1992. She was a devote parishioner at St Pius X Parish and a long-standing member of the Catholic Women's League. She was a loving wife to Gerry (d 1973) and an ever-loving mother to John (Nancy House), Anne (Ernie Yip) and Marie (Bill Stirling). She was an amazing Nana and will be sadly missed by Liam McCarthy; Meghan and Nick Yip; and Jenny, Evan and Alex Stirling. She will be remembered fondly by her siblings Betty Carroll (d Kevin), Tony Healey (Maureen), Adrian Healey (Theresa), and Frank Healey (Ethel). Predeceased by her parents Mary (Davis) and Peter Healey, her in-laws James V. and Julia McCarthy; siblings Teresa McCarthy (d Vincent), and Michael Healey (Agnes). She leaves a large circle of family and friends with many treasured nieces and nephews, including the special gang from 5 Appledore Place. A very special thanks to neighbors Erin and Gail Dempsey, and all the wonderful residents and staff at Meadow Creek Retirement Center and the staff of Ward 4South A at the Health Sciences. McDONALD ROWE, Kenneth Gordon - Age 67, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2015 in the presence of his loving wife, Beverley. He is predeceased by his father Albert, his mother Jane, sister Betty, brother Lindy and nephew Adam. Left to mourn his wife Beverley, children Christine (Stephen), Bryan (Jennifer), Catherine (Carey - deceased) and Allyson (Keith), his grandchildren Marcienne, Amelya, Rowan, Jewelya, Tegan, Rhéanne and Riley and his beloved dogs Max, Ruby and Huey. Also mourning are his siblings Ella (Ian), Gladys (Greg), Marilyn, Rick, Ruth (Leonard), Jean (Dave) and Rose (Jerome). Born in St. John's, Ken finished high school at Booth Memorial, then moved to Labrador City to work with IOC as a welder for 15 years before returning to St. John's to continue his studies at Memorial University Engineering. He worked for the City if St. John's for a number of years before retiring. Ken loved the outdoors and was most at peace when cutting wood, blueberry picking, riding motorcycles, playing with his dogs or spending quality time with his grandchildren. He was an avid reader and had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. He was ever-present in the lives of his family and always willing to help at any cost. Thank you to Dr. Rorke, Dr. Downton and the nurses on 4 North A, especially Tim for their support and patience during a difficult time. Cremation has already taken place. MILLER, Capt. Patrick - (December 1st, 1928 - September 28th, 2015 - Captain Patrick Miller docked at his final port of call on Monday, September 28th, 2015, just a few months short of his 87th birthday. Dad lived everyday to the fullest. Being the youngest son of eleven children raised on Fogo Island he was not afraid of work. As a young boy he looked forward to spending his summers fishing on the Labrador with his father, Captain Paddy Miller. Second generation in the Marine Industry, he forged his way to always new and unique projects. He was known throughout his life as an honest businessman where a handshake meant more to him than a paper contract , he believed "a man was as good as his word". From sailing schooners of salt fish and rum, seal hunting, moving various cargoes from port to port and being the founder of the ferry service to Fogo Island, he had a sparkle in his eye for the sea and adventure. Pat is predeceased by his life partner and mother of his children Margaret (O'Brien), also his son-in-law and great friend Patrick (Paddy) Penton. He leaves to celebrate his life, wife Leona, whom he adored. His devoted children Agnes Penton, Anne and Dan Hornik, Pat and Sandi Miller, and Peggy and Oisin McMahon. His cherished grandchildren who completed his life and put new wind in his sails Claire and Sarah, Tabatha, Alexandria, Spencer and Patrick, Kristen and Daniel, Genevieve, Clarissa and Isobel. His one and only great-grandchild Evan Patrick. He will be greatly missed by many special friends, numerous nieces and nephews, especially his caring niece Joan Delaney. Leaving to mourn her loving husband of 47 years Allan Nuotio, daughter Linda (Lyndon), her two sons Glenn (Niall) and Mark (Julie), and also Mary's treasured grandchildren Katharine and Parker. PENWELL, Martha - It is with profound sadness we announce the sudden passing of our dear Mom, Martha Penwell of Gander, on Sunday, September 13, 2015 while attending Mass at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, her favourite place. She was born on the family farm in Foot Cape, Inverness, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia to Bessie and Francis MacIntyre on August 24th, 1932. In 1955, Mom married the love of her life, Edward Penwell of Grand Bank, NL. She was tragically widowed in 1967 and left to raise their six young children. This was, without a doubt, her greatest accomplishment which brought her years of happiness and joy. Mom was known for her devout faith, compassion, kindness, grace, positive attitude, vibrant personality and beautiful smile and was always ready for a cup of tea and a chat. She was a Mother to more than just her own children and would be the first to help a person in need. She will be forever loved and missed by her children Lynn (Neil) Simms, Jim (Denise), Sandra (Bob) Smith, Cyndi (Darrell Janes), Joanne and Kathy (Jeff) Adey and by her precious grandchildren who adored their Nana: Victoria, Nathan and Joshua Simms; Edward, William and Richard Penwell; Derek and Kara Smith; Stephanie and Noah Adey. POWER-SHEA, Joyce Marilyn - Slipped away into eternal rest surrounded by the love of her family on Friday, September 11, 2015 age 57 years.Predeceased by her parents, Kathleen and Richard Power. Left to celebrate her life is her partner and love of her life, Gordon Shea, her three sons, Chuck (Chantal), Justin and Jordan and step-son, Greg, as well as her grandchildren, Adison, Nicholas and Alyssa. Also leaving to mourn her loss are her siblings, Walter, Eleanor, Clara, Ann, Rose, Ferg, Gerald, Rick, and Brian, as well as many members of the Shea Family, and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Brenda was the daughter of the late Terence and Nance (Nugent) Kennedy. Brenda taught us the meaning of real strength with the passing of her son John; Paramedic killed tragically while on duty during Hurricane Juan in Halifax, NS, Sept. 2003. WARREN, Lawrence "Larry" - Died Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at Camp Hill Veterans Hospital in Nova Scotia. Born in Salt Pond, Newfoundland, he was a son of the late Norman and Alice (Brenton) Warren. Known in his home town as "Bucky", Larry was an avid soccer player who was later inducted into the Newfoundland Soccer Hall of Fame. He went on to join the RCMP, graduating from Depot in 1964. He had a distinguished 40 career serving in Ontario, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Newfoundland. He retired with the rank of Assistant Commissioner, proudly in charge of his home province of Newfoundland and Labrador. He received numerous awards throughout his career, including the honored "Order of Merit" based on "the highest qualities of citizenship, service to Canada, to the police community, and to humanity at large". He was the husband and best friend of Laurette Warren (Young). He is survived by Laurette and their two children and families; Jennifer (Rodney) Spurrell; with children Mckenna, Cale and Connor and Norman (Lesley Michael) Warren, and their children Lucy and Elliot. He is also survived by his siblings Evelyn, Shirley, Norma, Raymond, Kathy, Linsey, Peggy, Christine, Jim and Penny-Lou. He was predeceased by his sister Marie Warren. Larry will be remembered as a generous and remarkable husband, father, brother and friend to all who knew and loved him. Cremation has taken place. WHITTEN, Cyril - Passed peacefully from the loving arms of his daughter, Elizabeth, into the loving arms of Jesus on Friday, September 18, 2015, at the age of 89 years, Cyril will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his daughter, Elizabeth; son-in-law, Karl; granddaughters, Jessica and Charlotte Bidgood; sisters, Marguerite Weir and Stella Evans (Murray); brothers, Ronald Whitten (Gert), Rt. Reverend Leonard Whitten (June) and Victor Whitten; special cousin, Muriel Andrews; brother-in-law, Cyril Weir; sister-in-law, Marie Weir; his many nieces, nephews and cousins; and a large circle of friends. Cyril is predeceased by his wife Phyllis (Weir) Whitten; parents, Cecil and Phoebe Whitten; infant sister, Madeline; sister, Mamie (Jack Howlett); brothers, Robert Whitten (Joan) and Max Whitten; parents-in-law, Harold and Jessie Weir; brothers-in-law, Herbert Weir, Lloyd Weir (Florence) and Robert (Bob) Weir; and sisters-in-law, Barbara Whitten and Verna Weir. Cyril was born on May 14, 1926 in "the green house on the Stand", Petty Harbour to Cecil and Phoebe (Andrews) Whitten. From a young age until his retirement in 1992, Cyril fished the waters of Motion Bay. He was the first Mayor of Petty Harbour and an advocate for the inshore fishermen and for his hometown. Cyril was a lifetime member of the Petty Harbour Fishermen's Cooperative and the Society of United Fishermen (SUF), including serving terms as the Grand Master of the SUF. A devoted member of St. George's Anglican Church throughout his life, Cyril has requested that in lieu of flowers, those who wish to make a memorial donation may do so to St. George's Anglican Church, Petty Harbour. His strong faith was reflected through his kindness, strength of character and his zest for life. Cyril's "larger-than-life personality", loud shouts and welcoming smile will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. The family expresses sincere gratitude to all the staff at St. Luke's Anglican Home, the Homecare workers, and also the Doctors and the nursing staff of 4 West at St. Clare's Hospital for their compassionate care given to Cyril during his short time there. The family will receive friends at Barrett's Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue on Sunday from 2-9 and Monday from 2-9. WHITTEN, Wayne Joseph - (December 23rd, 1961 - September 15th, 2015) - Passed suddenly away at his favorite place on September 15, 2015 at the age of 53 years. Predeceased by his parents Dermot and Geraldine. WILSON, James Paul - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James Paul Wilson at the age of 73 years on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at the Dr. L.A. Miller Centre. Born on Merasheen Island, Placentia Bay in 1942, Paul was a Marine Engineer. His life's work and love of the sea brought him to many places all over the world, and earned him friends from every walk of life. Though he travelled to many places in his lifetime, none ever compared to "home". He was a lover of books, crossword puzzles and music. Paul's family and friends will miss his storytelling, quick wit and humor. He is predeceased by his parents Paul and Jane Wilson, brothers Ernie (Myrtle), Gerald (Clara) and sisters Christina (John Rose), Alice (Paddy White), Carmel (Pat McCabe), Wilhelmina (Rick Reichlmayr) Grace (John Weeks), and brother-in-law Edward Bruce. Paul is survived by his loving daughter, Jennifer and her husband, Touly (Phiachantharath); her mother, Lillian; his sisters Laura (Alfred Goss) and Agnes Bruce; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, friends and family too numerous to mention but not forgotten. Visitation will take place at Caul's Funeral Home, on Thursday, October 1, 2015 from 5-9 p.m. Funeral Mass to take place at The Basilica on Friday, October 2, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. with private inurnment to follow at a later date. WOODFORD, Judith Mary - Gracefully passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2015 surrounded by her loving family in her 80th year. Predeceased by her husband Thomas and infant son Daniel James, parents James Herder and Esther (Carnell) and sister Nancy. Leaving to mourn: daughter Kay, sons Andy (Laura) and Tim and beloved grandchildren Nick, Claire and Sam Dobbin; Thomas, Lily and Daniel Woodford. Also mourning her loss: brother James Herder (Gail), Ontario and sister Barbara Corrigan, Washington.
