DELANEY, Patricia
Passed away on Thursday, September 14th. A teacher, volunteer, world traveller, orator, English scholar, wonderful Mother and friend has left this world a better place. Patricia Marie Delaney (child of the Universe as she often pointed out) was born in Grand Falls in 1930 to May Walsh of Argentia and James Delaney of Placentia. She was a gifted student and talented soprano who graduated Mount St. Vincent University before marrying Austin Davis (deceased). They had five much loved children Richard (deceased), Gerry (Felice), Evelyn, Siobhan (Pat Coady) and Renee. She adored her grandchildren Brook, Jake, Delaney, Ryan and Marc who will all miss her dearly. A dedicated lifelong volunteer, she most recently contributed to VOWR and to the Seniors Resource Centre where she taught safety and fraud awareness. She travelled the world and had many great adventures with her best friend Susan Capps. She looked forward to her daily walks around Kenny's Pond together with Susan and Verna Parsons - the ducks and crows will miss her treats. She loved her nieces and nephews, cousins and family very much and always appreciated their company and their kindness. She enjoyed her life at Kenny's Pond Residence and had a full social calendar. She will surely find a good game of bridge in heaven. She lived her life to the fullest and often said she was blessed. As were we. Words can not adequately describe the gratitude the family feels for the incredible care, concern and kindness given by the nurses, doctors and therapists in both the ER and 4SB especially Krista and Dr. Nedd. JACKMAN, Douglas Edward Taylor
Born: October 13th, 1953

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our cherished husband, father, grandfather (Pop), brother, brother-in-law, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend, Douglas Edward Taylor Jackman (Doug). Doug passed away at home, on September 11, 2017, in the loving arms of his family, after a courageous battle with lymphoma.
Doug faced his illness with courage, strength, and dignity, and without complaint. He was only ever concerned for those around him. Doug, or Jake to some, was a simple man, who enjoyed the simple things in life. Offer him the choice between a vacation in Jamaica, or just spending time with his family, and without hesitation, he would choose his family. Doug was a protective, loyal and dedicated family man. He radiated a sense of calm and serenity, which was immediately understood by all those who knew him. He saw the good in everyone, and was able to make all those who met him feel comfortable, special and accepted. Doug was truly all that "Good" defined. He will be forever remembered and adored for his selflessness and kindness, his relentless wit, and his unyielding integrity. We were so very blessed to have had him in our lives.
Doug was born and raised in St. John's, Newfoundland, the oldest son of Marie and Gerry Jackman. As a young boy and man, he excelled in everything he did. He married Lynn, the love of his life, in 1978 and they had two wonderful sons, Paul and Doug. Then came his four adored grandchildren, and Pop did truly live for, adore and enjoy his four grandchildren. Doug worked with Newfoundland Power for 39 years, where he was highly regarded and respected by all those he worked with. His work ethic was unmatched and he was known as the go-to guy. He had retired in recent years to spend time with his family and to be a full-time Pop. But that was not to be ... and he was taken from us far too soon. Doug leaves to mourn his loving wife of 46 years, Lynn; his cherished sons Paul (Jenna) and Douglas (Sarah); adored grandchildren Taylor, Mason, Van and Mia; his devoted siblings Gerry (also best buddy), Susan (Brian) and Bob; brothers and sisters-in-law Natasha (Paulie), Roland (Mary), Judy (Mike), Doris (Ed), George (Colleen), Derrick, Eddie, Liz, Dawn, Susan (Ern), Debbie (Barry), and Florance (Stuart); his nieces and nephews Ryan, Matthew, Brielle, Bronwyn, Alexander, Christopher, Melanie, Jason, Kyle, Sean, Jason, Chris, Jeff, Joanie, Brad, Nicole, Steve, Wanda, Bobby, Kenny, Danielle, Jennifer, Jeanette, Brandon, Elwood, Dennis, Gus, Andrew, Kevin, Justin, Tyler, Tina, Amy and Riley; his aunt Noreen; his cousins Sharon and Dave; and his many special friends. Doug is now in the loving arms of his parents Marie and Gerry, his baby brother Paulie (Will), parents-in-law Susie and George, and dear friends Jim K., Paul A., Peter H. Be at peace sweet sweet Doug. You have left behind an afterglow of smiles and happy memories. The family would like to extend special thank-yous to brother Ger, who spent most nights hanging out with Doug and Lynn, since Doug got ill, and to daughters-in-law Jenna, who helped guide and bring comfort to Doug through those final hours, and to Sarah who promised Doug she would take care of his babies. Thank you to all the neighbors, friends and co-workers, who were there for us when our hearts were broken; who comforted us, did errands and fed us, and made us laugh; and who spent time with Doug, chatting, laughing, and reminiscing, especially Smitty, Levi, Doris and Ed M. ,Ed E., John, Harry, Kathy, Daphne and Mario, and Louise. Thank you to Dr. Neil Manning, for his truly compassionate care, and to nurse Sharon Nurse, who Doug fondly called "Nurse Nurse". Visitation for Doug will be held on Wednesday, September 13, Thursday, September 14, and Friday, September 15, 2017 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at Barrett's Funeral Home, 73 Commonwealth Avenue, Mount Pearl. A celebration of Doug's life will take place on Saturday, September 16 at 10 am, at St. Peter's Catholic Church at 110 Ashford Drive, Mt. Pearl. Flowers accepted, or please donate to the Children's Wish Foundation. Please visit www.barretts.ca to sign the memorial guest book.
Sleep tight my angel. Love always, Lynn

JAMIESON, Elsie
Age 63 of St. John's, NL, after a quick and ferocious fight with cancer, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, September 27th, 2017. Elsie was a dedicated RN (class of '86) and spent her career healing others without ever taking one sick day for herself. After retiring three years ago she spent her time with her children, renovating, travelling and enjoying every moment with her family and friends.
Elsie was a driven, stubborn, loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother with a not-so-secret love for organizing, cleaning and puttering. She loved to dance, paint, play cards and shop but most of all she loved to laugh.
We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from Elsie during her 63 years, among them: keep your house clean, plan ahead and be organized. You can't live in squalor. De-clutter your life. There is no sense in holding on to junk for the sake of holding onto it. If it's ugly, throw it out. Unless its a receipt, for God's sake don't throw those out. Most places have terrible return policies.
Elsie would like to let you know that she is done working and she received an offer she can't refuse. One that comes with clean, organized accommodations and a reunion with family she has not seen in a long time. Her new journey takes her to a wonderful place where she will be dancing, socializing, painting, gardening and playing 120s with Nan. Good music is guaranteed with no commercials. Food is delicious and you never gain an ounce. She left instructions for her family to celebrate her as she was and not to get bent out of shape about it. Anything less will not be tolerated.
Elsie is survived by her loving husband Christopher Jamieson; her children Katie Jamieson (Gabor Girgis) and her sweet little granddaughter Amalia and Steven Jamieson (Hannah Hamel); her siblings Marie Walbourne (Bryan), Pat Walbourne (Clare), Jean Pickett (Joe), Robert Walbourne (Milena) Bernice Barrington (Terence), David Walbourne (Lynn); sisters and brothers-in-law Paula Magalios (Yanis), Scott Jamieson (Anne), Diane Cohen (Larry) Brenda Connors (Rick Vaughan), Susan Jamieson, Barry Jamieson, Vicki Jamieson (Simon Kirby) and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her father and mother Francis and Cecelia Walbourne and her mother and father-in-law Phyllis and Walter Jamieson.
Visitation will be Friday, September 29th, 2017 from 11 am - 9 pm at Caul's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road. A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, September 30th at 11 am at Caul's Chapel. Father Puddister, the priest who married Elsie and Chris, will officiate. Flowers graciously accepted. A music scholarship has been set up with the Kiwanis Music Festival in St. John's as well as the New Glasgow Music Festival in Nova Scotia. Donations to either can be made by contacting the family.

Celine continued her education at Memorial College in St. John's and in 1967 graduated from Laval University in Quebec with a Masters cum laude in French Literature. She taught at Mercy Convent School, St John's; St Michael's College, St. George's; St. Brides College Littledale, St. John's; and St. Lawrence College, Quebec City. As a member of Friends of the St. Boniface Historical Society, Celine participated in the activities of St. Boniface University, the Cultural Centre and Cercle Moliere. She was a proud supporter and advocate for the preservation of Gabrielle Roy House Museum. Celine stayed true to her Newfoundland roots, returning each summer in the years following her retirement to reconnect with friends and her ever expanding family of whom she was so fond and proud. She recognized her own heritage in 2000 by the placement of a commemorative plaque on the Family Shop marking three generations in operation. The family expresses gratitude to the staff of Victoria General Hospital for their dedicated care and to the dear friends of Celine who offered such support to her and to her sisters during their time in Winnipeg.

When I come to the end of the road,
And the sun has set for me,
I want no rites in a gloom filled room,
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little but not too long,
And not with your head bowed low,
Remember love that we once shared,
Miss me, but let me go.
For this is a journey that we all must take,
And each must go alone,
It's all a part of the master's plan,
A step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick of heart,
Go to the friends we know,
And bury your sorrow in doing good deeds,
Miss me, but let me go.

Through his work life at the Janeway Children's Hospital, Francis was known for his fairness, kindness and support of those in his Department. As he loved working with young people, his involvement with the Navy League of Canada allowed him to be not only a Commanding Officer, but also a role model for how we should respect and treat others. He held the Military in high regard and paid many visits to veterans at the Veterans Pavilion, Dr. L A Miller Centre, just to have a chat, as a way of acknowledging and thanking them for their service. His participation in the provincial political scene, where he was known for his campaign management skills, gave him the opportunity to acquire a large circle of friends who appreciated his passion for politics, and how he valued everyone he met. As the ultimate story teller, Francis has left his family with many memories upon which to reflect; we have learned so much from his life experiences, his selfless deeds and his kind words to others. He was indeed a gentle, inspiring man. Cremation has taken place. Visitation at Caul's Funeral Home, Torbay, on Thursday, September 28 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm and 7:00 - 9:00 pm. Private funeral mass and interment at a later date. In lieu of flowers and in keeping with his life's philosophy of being good to others, we know Francis would prefer that a tribute be paid in some small way to a veteran, or that a donation be made in his honour to a youth organization or the S.P.C.A.

SIMMONS, Mercedes Kathleen
Born: January 12th, 1924
Stephenville Crossing

Leaving us with a legacy of her love and a life well lived for 93 years we sadly announce the passing of our dear mother Mercedes (Merce) Simmons on September 10, 2017. She passed away at the Bay St. George Long Term Care Centre, Stephenville Crossing. She was predeceased by her husband Eric Hugh Simmons in 2014. She leaves to mourn one son Randy (Peggy Power) and four daughters: Judy (Vince Parsons), Valerie (Terry Broadbent), Vicki (Kelly Tompkins), Marsha (Craig Wilson) and Barbara Kelly, another of Mom's "girls." She was a loving grandmother to Meredith Macleod, Alex Macleod, Joel Parsons, Rebecca Wilson and Andrew Wilson. Her grandkids got to see the playful side of Grandma Merce. She doted on the faraway grandchildren during their holiday visits, and she had the pleasure of watching Joel grow up. She also leaves to mourn her sisters: Regina Bosacki (Calif.), Ann Madore (Mississauga), her sisters-in-law Phyllis Simmons (Corner Brook) and Beulah Power (Mount Pearl), as well as a large family of nieces, nephews and countless friends.
Mom loved her community. Her volunteer work in Stephenville Crossing spanned decades; she worked with the Red Cross, Women's Institute, Altar Society, Ladies Auxiliary of the Bay St. George LTCC, St. Vincent de Paul Society and Assumption Parish Church Council. Her affiliation with Assumption Parish as an Extraordinary Minister gave her particular joy. Countless trays of sandwiches were assembled for evening meetings and she carried out her volunteer work in the company of her dearest friends.
Mom was generous. She particularly loved to feed people; there were always tins filled with baking in the event of unexpected visitors. Her homemade bread and rolls were legendary. Mom was a night owl, and her great pleasure was having someone to share a nightcap and conversation with late in the evening. Her home was a sanctuary to all who visited and she made it look effortless. She was an energetic, positive lady who did everything in moderation. When the nest was finally empty she worked part-time helping Dad run his business at the Imperial Oil bulk plant. In her early sixties she worked at the newly founded Happy Tots' Day Care Centre where she was a natural with the little ones. An avid walker, she and Dad exercised at Black Bank for many years and well into her eighties she continued her daily walks around town. She took up cross country skiing at 60 years of age and loved weekend skiing at the Whaleback Ski Club. We fondly remember our mother as a terrible driver, charming flirt, social butterfly and keen lover of fashion. When dementia stole away her memories she remained a dignified lady with impeccable manners.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dinah Billard, Mom's Personal Care Worker whom she loved, Geraldine Young, her dedicated friend and assistant, and the management and staff of the Bay St. George Long Term Care Centre. Their dedication to Mom goes unsurpassed and they made her last years happy, safe and comfortable. In accordance with her wishes Mom has been cremated; her funeral is entrusted to Fillatre's Funeral Home, Stephenville Crossing. Visitation, Funeral Mass and interment will be announced at a later date. Persons wishing to make donations in Mom's memory can kindly do so by supporting the Assumption Parish Cemetery Fund or the Ladies Auxiliary of the Bay St. George Long Term Care Centre.

It is with great sadness the family shares the sudden passing of our beloved Allison Smith. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are Allison's loving parents Tim and Collette Smith. Brothers Matthew and Jordan; Grandparents John & Mary Power; Ches & Donna Smith. Gary & Vicki, Jennifer, Ryan Power; Paul Power; Sharon Power, Samantha Kao; Joanne Walsh, Devin Swann; Jeannie & Max Harding; Tammy Smith; Todd Smith & Colleen Connelly, Kristen, Chelsea, Juianna Smith; Trevor & Jennifer, Sarah, Ryan Smith; Trent Smith and Jackie Cullimore, Shannon Pike. Predeceased by Nan & Pop Marsh; Sharon Smith; Jonathan White; Wally Swann. A true free spirit, Allison had a true love for the earth, all animals and spirituality found in nature. Allison was the type of gentle soul who would lead a spider to the door rather than, as she put it, "take its life." Allison had a special way to connect with people through her warm personality, gentle smile and unique sense of humour. She could be quiet in a crowd - but the life of the party with her friends or family. An old soul, she loved reading the classics, watching quirky movies and finding ways to connect to nature. She touched many lives, probably more than she ever realized. Allison was a true joy to her family and wide group of friends. She had a heart of gold that she loved to let shine. Allison will be deeply missed by many and she will be forever loved. A heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped and supported us in so many ways. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made to the Clarenville SPCA in honour of Allison. Everyone is invited to join us in honouring Allison at Fewer's Funeral Home (299 Memorial Drive) in Clarenville on September 10 from 6-9 pm and September 11 from 2-6 pm. We would like to invite young people to come anytime - but a special time is set aside at 6pm on September 11 for you to celebrate Allison. A ceremony will be held at 2 pm on September 12 at the Memorial United Church (Marine Drive) in Clarenville.
