BRUCE, Ticky (Agnes P. Bruce)
Born: November 26th, 1964
Passed on: September 16th, 2018

Our beloved Ticky left this earth on Sunday, September 16th, 2018. We are profoundly saddened for we have lost our family beacon. We take comfort in knowing that she spent her final days in peace, surrounded by her loving family and friends at the Placentia Health Centre. Ticky's life, though short in years, brought an amazing amount of joy and laughter to all those who were touched by her humour, wit, and thoughtfulness. She was a force to be reckoned with and lived her life to the fullest in her own unique way. With her comedic timing and quick-wittedness you often had no choice but to buckle over in laughter even at a most unexpected times. Our sister, Tick resided in Fort McMurray for several years and worked as an Environmental tech for a geology company. She loved to entertain her family and friends and was an awesome aunt to her nieces and nephews. A no-nonsense type of gal, Tick loved camping, golfing, gardening, and simply hanging out on her days off doing her yard work and maintaining her lovely home. Ticky's compassion and caring for her family and friends knew no boundaries. In 2012, she resigned from a job she loved and sold her house in Fort McMurray to move back to Placentia and care for our ailing mother. With no complaints she put her life on hold and doted and nurtured our mom with the intensity of an angel. She was kind to her friends and she had many. Tick wanted her closest friends to know that she was grateful and appreciative for all the calls, texts, and visits. Often she wanted quiet time but didn't want anyone to feel unloved or left out. Juanita, Val, Carly, Bernadine, Carol, Janet, Lisa, and Bev she loved you dearly. Our sister was predeceased by her dear parents Edward P. Bruce and Agnes C. Bruce. Leaving behind to remember and forever cherish the memories of our sister Tick is her loving family: Debbi, Rossie (Ron Dray), Bonnie (Kurt Norman), and Jill, brother Eddy, (Della), nieces Amber, Taylr, Brandee and Madisen, nephews Eddy and Cody. Also sister leaves behind her Uncle Willie Bruce and her Aunt Laura Goss, both of whom she thought the world off, as well as her extended family and friends. Ticky is so very missed by her beautiful pet dog Nessie, or as Tick lovingly referred to as her angel from heaven. We would like to thank the professional staff at Caregiver's and the Placentia Health Centre for the care and compassion they provided for our family and our sister, Ticky. At Tick's request there will be a visitation at Maher's Funeral home in Placentia on Thursday, September 20th from 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place 10:30, Friday morning at Sacred Heart Church. Inurnment to follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Placentia. Rest well beautiful sister. We love you and miss you so much. To leave a message of condolence, please visit www.mahersfuneralhome.ca

BURTON, Harold (Hal)
St. John's native Harold "Hal" Burton, 98, passed away peacefully after a short illness on September 24, 2018 in Laconia, New Hampshire, USA where he and Ethel (Parsons), his wife of 79 years, had recently moved. Hal was born on Charlton Street, St. John's to Alexander Burton and Lillias (Shave) and was one of seven children (Irene, Herbert, Evelyn, Alexander, Margaret and Sylvia). Hal spoke often about his father taking him as a six-year-old to Cabot Tower Hill in May 1927 to see Charles Lindbergh fly over St. John's en route to Paris during the first solo trans-Atlantic non-stop flight from North America to Europe. Born in St. John's on April 13, 1920, Hal and Ethel (also of St. John's and Seal Cove, Conception Bay) were married in Bishops Falls on August 20, 1939 which was less than two weeks before the start of WWII on September 1, 1939. The young couple welcomed their first son, Peter, in May 1942 while Hal worked as a welder and hospital orderly at various military installations before moving his family to Toronto in 1945 where second son Gary was born. Hal and Ethel then moved to St. Albans (on New York's Long Island), Brooklyn and Springfield, Mass., before settling in New Hampshire where they frequently hosted their three sons (Peter, Gary and Rick), their wives (Patti, Chris and Barbara), seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Hal brought his family back to Newfoundland frequently including in 1961 (Home for Fun in '61) when son Peter and Hal drove the family from Port Aux Basques (through horrendous forest fires) to reach St. John's. Hal was an active outdoorsman and loved ocean swimming, skiing and was frequently in demand on trips back to Seal Cove to participate in "Screeching them in" and cod-kissing ceremonies. He was extremely proud the day he took his three grandchildren Stephanie, Harold Andrew and Meredith to Bay Bulls for puffin and whale watching and also to Brigus, C.B. Hal and Ethel belonged to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in New London, NH and travelled frequently to see their sons (including trips to Nicaragua and Australia) and his sisters in Calgary and British Columbia. Hal was a proud Newfoundlander and the Ode to Newfoundland was read at his memorial service. He regularly flew the Newfy flag at his NH home and two of his sons owned Newfoundland dogs (to honor their heritage). Hal finished his career as a nuclear engineer for Combustion Engineering in Windsor Locks, Conn., a place where he played a major role in securing multiple engineering patents. He and Ethel celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary in 2014 (an occasion featured in the Downhome magazine). A Celebration of Life event was planned for Saturday December 1st in Meredith, NH. Donations can be made to the Newfoundland Salvation Army in Hal's name.
"When blinding storm gusts fret thy shore,
And wild waves lash thy strand,
Thro' spindrift swirl, and tempest roar,
We love thee windswept land.
As loved our fathers, so we love,
Where once they stood, we stand;
Their prayer we raise to Heaven above,
God guard thee, Newfoundland."

FLEMING, Scott Gregory
July 13, 1971 - September 01, 2018

It's with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Scott Gregory Fleming at the young age of 47. Scott was born on July 13, 1971 in the city of Toronto. Scotty, as many people like to call him, spent most of his younger years in the Northwest Territories in a little town called Pine Point. His Dad (Gregory) and Mom (Bernadette) moved there, along with many other family members, to pursue a career in Mining. Scotty spent most days dressed identical to his big brother Alvin, since they were often mistaken as twins being only 11 months apart. As the years went by and Scotty grew to be 15 years old, the family made the trek back to settle in Stephenville, Newfoundland, where he eventually met his beautiful wife, Bobbi Lee (Oxford). It was there also that younger brother Bobby would spend most of his time trying to escape the shenanigans of having two older brothers, something he and Bobbi Lee had in common, since she spent most of her time watching for the bus while her three older sisters finished their hair. It was also there Scotty would build many long lasting friendships, with too many names to mention, but all having a special place in his heart. His best friend Jason Dobbin however would be one of his closest, with many memories we know you will always hold near at heart. In 1998, he would change the life of a young lady by asking her out for a coffee. That girl would eventually become his wife in August of 2002. Scotty pursued a career in Civil and Safety Engineering Technology and eventually settled into a long career with the City of St. John's. He continued to build on friendships there and to this very day, have a wonderful and supportive work family. In saying all this, his most cherished and proudest accomplishments in life came with the creation of two beautiful children, Conor (11 years) and Reagan (10 years). With these two came many cherished relationships especially in the line of sports. To all those Hockey/Soccer Moms and Dads out there, hold your children tight and know you all have made an impact in our lives. The love and support you have shown us will never go far from us. These two children have an advantage in life already by having a foundation layed by one of the best, their Dad. Our little family will always be of four members, just with one member now living in our hearts. To the wife he chose, and now leaves on earth, there will be no other comparison. Gratefulness is all there is for choosing me for this journey. Rest easy now knowing that I will take it from here, as I promised you I would. Predeceased by grandparents: Brendon and Matilda Alexander, and Bernard and Margaret Fleming. Left with fond and loving memories his parents Greg and Bernadette; his brothers: Alvin (Colleen) with nephews Matthew and Andrew, and Bobby (nephew Grady and niece Rylie); and a special friend Jason Dobbin and family; his wife Bobbi-Lee (Oxford) and children Conor and Reagan; father and mother-in-law Conrad and Livie Oxford; sisters-in-law: Kim Mercer (Jeff), Rhonda Stone (Brian), and Kellie Burton (Munn); nephews and nieces: Tyler, Jenna-Lee, Nathan, Brianna, Alex and Jules. Visitation will be held at Barrett's Funeral Home, 73 Commonwealth Avenue, Mount Pearl on Thursday, September 6th, from 2-4 pm and from 7-9 pm. Memorial service to be held at Elim Pentecostal Tabernacle on Friday, September 7, 2018, at 6 pm. Donations can be made to in his memory to Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre. Please visit www.barretts.ca to sign the memorial guest book. Our many, many thanks to the exceptional staff of Eastern Health, especially on 4-NA and my work family. Know that you all have made a difference in our lives. There will be a memorial service in Stephenville, NL with date to be announced.

RICHARDS, Jonathan Edwards
Passed on: September 26th, 2018
1933 - 2018

In the presence of loving family, Jonathan passed peacefully away on Sept. 26th. He was predeceased by his parents Mabel and John Richards, his twin sister Anna, and his first wife Ruth Eddy. Leaving to mourn are his beloved wife Olga Broomfield, his much loved 5 children, Renee Oram (Donald), John (Shellie), Mark (Sheri), Esther (Rene Bourque), Elizabeth Kessel (Bruce); his much loved grandchildren, Nathanael Oram (Marla), Johanna Morrow (Eric), David Ross (Amanda Rae), Nicholas Oram, Jonathan II, Deanna Ross, Breanna Claesson (Rasmus), Quinn, Zak Kessel, Sophie, Alex Kessel, Emily Kessel, Logan; his delightful great-grandchildren, Nolan & Cecily Oram, Alex & Owen Morrow, Ellie Rae Ross; his siblings Gordon (Ethlyn), Wilfred (Diane), Lois Hans, Eunice Sinclaire. Jonathan was a direct descendant of the great 18th century theologian, Jonathan Edwards, who founded the library of Yale University. His grandparents and parents were missionaries in South Africa, where Jonathan was born, and educated in a British boarding school until age 14, when he went to America for high school. Two goals in his life were formed in those years - to follow his family's missionary tradition, and to play the cello, an instrument which had entranced him during a visit to a German plantation where a string quartet was playing. He completed high school and went onto Bible College, where he met Ruth, a Newfoundlander, and upon graduation, married her. Their plan to go to S. Africa as missionaries was changed, so Jonathan decided to join the US Airforce Chaplain Service, having placements in New Mexico, California and Japan. After an honorable discharge, he attended Theological Seminary in Boston, but fell ill, and joined his in-laws in Stephenville, NL, to recuperate. Here he developed a career change, took a degree in Education at MUN, and became an extremely successful teacher at the original branch of the College of the North Atlantic. His wife also became a teacher. His students loved him, delighting in his unique sense of humor, which he even scripted into his formal examinations. Here he finally had a chance to pursue his broad musical interests - with his beautiful baritone voice he had his own radio broadcast singing gospel hymns, directed the church choir, and mastered the vibraphone. Finally, he had a chance to play his cherished cello, and 19th century instrument made in Mittenwald, Germany. He took early retirement to care for his dying wife. After a year of grieving he left Newfoundland for Nova Scotia, where he courted his second wife, another Newfoundlander, who was teaching in the English Department in Mount St. Vincent University. In Halifax, he joined the Chebucto Symphony Orchestra, thrilled to be playing his cello in concerts. After marriage and his wife's retirement, they returned to Newfoundland, where Jonathan joined the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, where for 14 years, his passion for the cello found its greatest release. He had perfect pitch and a deep knowledge of music. His unique sense of humor found outlets in rehearsals where his sayings and doings are still fondly remembered. His last years were plagued with an increasing number of debilitating diseases, which he struggled to accept with the patience that marked his entire life. He was a remarkably loving, gentle man, who touched many lives. His loved ones know well how privileged they are to have had him in their lives, and his legacy will live on through them. Everyone who knew him valued his approachable demeanor, thoughtful ways, generosity and kindness, tremendous love and wisdom. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Sunday Sept 30th from 2-4pm and 7-8:30pm at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John's. Memorial Service will be held on Monday October 1st at 11am from St. James United Church, 330 Elizabeth Avenue, followed by a reception there. Private interment to follow. Donations will be gratefully received to the 'Olga Broomfield-Richards and Jonathan Richards Scholarship in Memory of Reginald and Nita Broomfield' at Memorial University of Newfoundland, or any charity of your choice. Predeceased by her parents Kenneth and Greta Mea Wheeler. father and mother-In-law Cyril and Stella Ruby. A special thank you to the staff on 5SB at the Health Sciences Center for the care, support and compassion they have shown Peggy and her family during her short illness. Cremation has already taken place and we will be respecting Peggy's wishes as we have done throughout her journey as there will be no visitation or service.
Peggy may have been very sick near the end but in our eyes, she had never lost the quiet sort of strength she always had even as she grew ill. Her voice was a voice that never failed to give us the comfort we needed as well as the best of advice. And it is at this moment we realize how in the end what we remember are not necessarily the grand things but the simple everyday things. While our family is deeply saddened by the loss of such a caring a loving person, we are grateful to have had her in our lives for as long as we did. We may have lost her physically now but we firmly believe as she also did that someday we will reunite once again. And as we wait for that day, we will keep her in our minds and our hearts where her memory will live on for as long as we do.

RUBY, Wendy Mae Lenore
Born: May 30th, 1964
Passed on: September 3rd, 2018
Age 54

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Wendy after a courageous twelve year battle with an undiagnosed chronic illness. It was a blessing that Wendy was able to fulfill her wish to return to her home on her cherished family farm surrounded by her many family and friends in her final days. Predeceased by her treasured father Eric Ruby, her grandparents and many aunts and uncles in the Boyles and Ruby family. Leaving to mourn with wonderful memories are her loving mother Audrey (Boyles) Ruby, much loved and endeared brother Roger (Tara Antle), adored nephews Cody (Vanessa Bennett) and Eric ("who will always own her heart"); her beloved Suz (Barb Gromick), Duckie (Ronnie Reynolds), special friend Dan Murphy and extended family and friends. Wendy will always be remembered as a fun, free-spirited and loving ("salt of the earth") girl who found pure joy each day that she spent on the family farm on Ruby Line, Kilbride. Her zeal for life was also evident in her many years as a member of the "Le Weekenders" softball team which saw Wendy as the catalyst of many good times and lots of laughter. Wendy's innate love of people was the driving force behind her decision to leave her much loved island and pursue a successful career in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Her 22 years as an RCMP officer were spent in Nova Scotia where she was part of the Criminal Interdiction Team, a respected School Liaison Officer who thought nothing of sitting on a school roof for four days to raise funds for the school library, site facilitator during the Swiss Air and 9-11 tragedies and was founding member of Cops and Kids, an initiative to support at risk youth. Her time in the RCMP saw Wendy participate in and travel to Europe as part of the lance drill team in the Nova Scotia Tattoo. Wendy led, supported and displayed passion and commitment above and beyond what is typically inherent in the role of an RCMP officer. Wendy had a love for life that led her to travel North America, Europe and the Middle East as she sought out adventure. Every day whether travelling or at home was an occasion for celebration. Wendy found joy in the smallest of moments. Wendy wore her heart on her sleeve and shared a love for her hero Winnie the Pooh. As her hero Winnie the Pooh says, "Love isn't something you have to define to yourself. You feel love, give love and surround yourself with love." Visitation to be held from Barrett's Funeral Home, 73 Commonwealth Avenue, Mount Pearl on Tuesday from 7-9 pm and then on Wednesday from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral service to be held at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Goulds on Thursday, September 6, 2018 at 11 a.m. Interment to follow at St. Matthew's Cemetery, Goulds. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Newfoundland Down Syndrome. Please visit www.barretts.ca to sign the memorial guest book.

The clouds in the sky,
We cannot look at these things,
And ask the question "Why?"
You've gone on to the next stage of existence,
Whatever that may be,
And you have our love with you,
For all eternity.
Loved forever, Forgotten never.
