She was a beautiful and vibrant woman who enjoyed cooking, reading, writing, and joining discussions on a wide variety of topics. She was a fierce competitor at Bridge, other card games, and Scrabble, and never lost her pleasure at watching "Jeopardy" and "Wheel of Fortune." As per Dana's wishes, cremation has taken place. CLOSE David Wayne
1945 - 2019
Professor David Close
, a distinguished retired member of the Memorial University Political Science Department, passed away unexpectedly in hospital on September 15, 2019. In addition to his nephews Jamie and Jon Close, his former wife Alice Close, and Rosa García-Orellán, David leaves an array of friends, colleagues and former students here and across the world. David was born in Adrian, Michigan on May 15, 1945. He obtained degrees in international affairs and Latin American studies at Georgetown University and Wayne State University, before earning his PhD in political science from McGill University. In 1975 he was appointed as a founding faculty member at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in Corner Brook. From there he transferred to the Political Science Department in St. John's in 1977. David was a highly productive and respected scholar. Early in his career his focus shifted from Canadian to Latin American and comparative politics. He authored three books on Nicaragua and edited or co-edited several more books in this field. He also published some forty articles and book chapters. A number of his works were written in, or translated into, Spanish. His facility with that language, as well as French and Portuguese, enabled a leading international presence. He served as President of the Canadian Association of Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CALACS), member of the Board of Directors of Fondación Canada-America Latina (FOCAL), and as Editorial Board Member for the Journal of Conflict Studies. David was equally dedicated to his role as a teacher. He engaged students with his dry wit and affable "open door" presence in the department. He was a generous, supportive and astute mentor who took time to talk with students, read their work and offer suggestions and insight. He supervised numerous honours and masters theses and served on PhD examination boards. He was a co-author of an extremely successful introductory politics textbook and wrote a textbook on Latin American politics which is currently in its second edition. In addition to teaching, researching and writing, David served Memorial University and the wider community in numerous administrative capacities. For many years he served as Coordinator of the Political Science Department Graduate Studies Committee, and also as Director of the Internship Programme. He served as both Acting Head and Interim Head of the Department. He was a member of many University and Faculty committees and served as Vice President of the Faculty Association (MUNFA). He served on the Boards of the St. John's Oxfam Centre and the Newfoundland Human Rights Association. He provided commentary on public affairs in French and Spanish for Radio Canada and Nicaraguan radio. David was a congenial, witty friend and colleague. After retiring in 2013, David remained in St. John's and continued to research and write at a somewhat more relaxed pace. He was a sports fan and avid mystery reader who enjoyed travel and could be found throughout his neighbourhood walking his dog, Bailey. He was a good neighbour who took the time to stop and talk and allow Bailey to be petted. The Memorial University Political Science Department will host an informal reception to honour David Close in the Junior Common Room, R. Gushue Hall, on Tuesday, November 12, 4:00 p.m. Colleagues, friends and former students of David are invited to share their memories. Refreshments will be served. Additional information may be found on the department website, https://www.mun.ca/posc/ https://www.mun.ca/posc/ or phone (709) 864-8179. DAVIDSON, Elsie (nee Hollett)
Published: September 28, 2019
September 7, 2019

Elsie was born June 14, 1929 in Spencer's Cove Newfoundland to Nathaniel and Genevra Hollett (nee Gilbert). The family moved to St John's in 1931 and three more children were born, Jean, Rex and Mabel. While Nat was doing war service in the army, the family emigrated to Canada by taking a ship from Newfoundland to Montreal. There was a real risk of German U-boat attacks and the family had to do drills for lifeboat evacuation. The family took the train to the west coast and settled in Nanaimo with relatives. All five family members slept in one bed. After the war Nat joined the family in Nanaimo and started a trucking business. Elsie would often join her father while he worked. Nat was injured in an accident and Elsie left school after grade 11 to help support the family, by joining the bank of Commerce at age 17, in Parksville. There she met Bruce Davidson. They had four boys, Grant, Ross, Paul, and Glenn. Elsie continued to work at the bank after Bruce's retirement and she retired in 1983. As a wife and mother there were few equals. Elsie committed herself to her husband, children, her church, her friends, her family and her community. She would dance all Saturday night, get the family out of bed for church in the morning, have people back after church for tea and cook dinner for 20 at the drop of a hat. Everyone was welcome, no one excluded. She was a giant. Bruce passed away in 2007 and Elsie, together with our dear friend Aida, took to filing the house with and feeding a generation of National team rowers. She fed many an Olympian. Elsie would say it was just like having her boys back home. Elsie loved them and they loved her. In addition to her support of the Canadian Olympic team Elsie was a founding member and stalwart servant of the Norgaard Foundation. Elsie continued as she always did through a prolonged fight with dementia. She passed peacefully, in her time, in her home and in her words, I never had an ache or a pain and I sleep like a dog. She was predeceased by her husband Bruce, her siblings, and her son Grant. She is loved by 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, a large family of nieces and nephews, her church family, and many friends. There are hundreds that have felt loved by Elsie Davidson

EDISON, Sheila Gladys (Gosling)

Born April 14, 1933 and entered into eternal rest on September 22, 2019, peacefully and with dignity; a matriarch, surrounded by her family. Sheila was born in St. John's, one of eight children. She was a tireless and inspirational woman. She began her married life in Botwood, welcoming five children. Her devotion to her family guided her life. She and Elmer worked and loved as a team. If something needed to be done, Sheila was ahead of the pack, initiating projects and seeing them through. Anyone who knows Botwood back in the day remembers the excitement and activity of living there at that time. Over the years they pursued many avenues of adventure to ensure the happiness and livelihood of their family. Sheila loved to see the family grow, and fortunately, there always seemed to be babies on the scene. She left this world as she lived…with a song in her heart and dancing toward her next great adventure, relying on her faith, and secure in the knowledge that she would be reunited with those loved ones who passed before her. FARRELL Edward
Published: September 17, 2019

It is with sad hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Ed Farrell of Petitcodiac, NB at his home on Sunday, September 16, 2019. He was 72 and was the son of the late Jack and Catherine (Egan) Farrell. Ed enjoyed life to its fullest in his career as a RCMP member. He graduated Depot in 1968 and served in Toronto, Fredericton, McAdam, Doaktown, Petitcodiac, and the Northwest Territories, including Yellowknife and Toktoyaktuk. While up north he enjoyed the outdoor life of snowmobiling and fishing. Ed retired as a Staff Sergeant in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland. After retirement, Ed moved to Petitcodiac where he took up his passion, golf, which he enjoyed to the fullest with his buddies, Harry and Gordie. Ed's other passion was cards and on Tuesdays and Thursdays he would be found in his shed with the boys taking dimes and quarters. Also, during the past few years he took up cycling and he and Val cycled the Confederation Trail and Mount Tremblant. Ed was such an avid gardener that his two apple trees became so productive that his sisters, Eileen and Cathy had to be brought from "off shore" to pick the harvest. Ed put his "Up North" trapping experience to good use and became an experienced live trapper of raccoons and squirrels. As good as he was, there was one mighty beast that required Ed to call the professionals - a small brown mouse! Ed loved to travel, he especially enjoyed his April golf trips to Myrtle Beach to play with his Petty buddies. On his seventieth birthday he made his dream trip to Ireland with Val, John, Erzsi, and Cathy. One of the highlights for Ed was kissing the Blarney Stone. Ed is survived and sadly missed by his loving wife of 15 years, Valerie Farrell (Dunfield); sisters, Eileen Carson (Reg) and Cathy Andrews all of St. John's NL; brother John Farrell (Erzsi) of Edmonton, AB; mother-in-law, Verna Dunfield; brothers-in-law, Rick Dunfield (Ellen), Len Dunfield (Dawn); sister-in-law, Shirley Armstrong (Gerald); several nieces and nephews who were very special to Ed, and who Ed loved as if they were his own. With broken hearts, we say goodbye to our Sam who passed peacefully on September 4, 2019 at the age of 27. Sam was a compassionate and loving son, brother, uncle, nephew, grandson and cat-dad. He was bright and jovial, bringing his lopsided grin and enthusiasm wherever he went. He approached life with passion, whether he was brewing a decadent pour-over coffee, devouring science fiction novels or competing in a game of pool. He was finding success in his work life, advancing his career in banking. Beneath all this Sam struggled; he could not overcome his pain and he took his own life. We know Sam is at peace now. Sam is predeceased by his loving grandparents Florence, Doug, Audrey and Alex, and his aunt Kristina. He will be eternally missed by his mother Sharon, father Dave, sister Joy (Michael) and nephew Maxwell. Also leaving to mourn his aunt Pamela (Todd), cousins Ayla, Mark and Claire and the extended Hopley family. O'DEA, Elizabeth Mary (Née Swain)
Published: September 24, 2019
Elizabeth Mary O'Dea (née Swain)
was born in Calvert on January 16, 1926 and died in Bay Bulls on September 19, 2019 at the age of 93. Above all, Elizabeth devoted her long life to the care of her family. She had a profound devotion to Our Lady and prayed the rosary daily. She valued friendship and had a strong sense of hospitality. She looked to find the good in everyone and always greeted others with a warm smile. She loved to play accordion, always had a song to sing, and greatly enjoyed a night of bingo and a game of 120s. Her beloved husband, Patrick O'Dea, died in 1992. Elizabeth often reminisced of their life together. She fondly remembered her family in Calvert, all of whom had gone before her, including parents Michael and Mary Margaret Swain, sisters Mary, Catherine, Margaret, Cecilia, and Valetta, brother Charles, and aunt Nora Rossiter. She spoke often of her husband's parents, Patrick and Clara, and his siblings, Thomas and Isabelle. In recent years, Elizabeth was saddened by the loss of her daughters-in-law Marion Chafe and Marilyn O'Dea and she mourned the passing of many lifelong friends, especially Dorothy Grouchy and Elizabeth Lundrigan. She prayed that she would one day be with them all again in Heaven. Elizabeth leaves behind children Brian, Patrick, Dominic, Dennis (wife Marie), Charlie, Mary (husband Armand), and precious son, Fabian. She also leaves grandchildren Amanda, BJ, Dominic, Robin, Neil, Sheri-Lynn, Leeanne, Colin, Jonathan and Daniel, and great-grandchildren Autumn and Rowan, as well as daughters-in-law Rosarie O'Dea and Marlene O'Dea, and a large circle of nieces and nephews from the Swain, Boland, Hayes, Murphy, Carey, and O'Brien families. Elizabeth cherished the enduring friendship of Margaret Crockwell and Josephine Tucker. Elizabeth received impeccable care under Dr. Peter Morry. She looked forward to his frequent house calls and she considered him and his staff a blessing in her last years. At the time of her death, her caregivers were Lisa Clowe, Shannon Williams, and Thora Williams. She appreciated all they did for her. Elizabeth also looked forward to her weekly visits from Mary Carey who, as an extraordinary minister to the sick, faithfully brought her Holy Communion every Saturday evening. Also, Msgr. Patrick Kennedy, Fr. Thomas O'Rourke, and the Martin family visited often to pray with and for her. These were intimate moments that comforted Elizabeth in her sickness. Since moving down the harbour, frequent visits from Barbara Oliver, Stephen and Kimberly Maloney, Darlene, Norma and Sheryl Williams, and her dearest young friends Robert and John Martin cheered Elizabeth greatly. The wake will take place at Ryan's Funeral Home in Bay Bulls on Sunday, September 22nd and Monday, September 23rd from 2-9pm. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 24th at 1pm at Sts. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church in Bay Bulls and the burial will follow at Our Lady of Mount Loretta Roman Catholic Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations to Sts. Peter & Paul Parish Restoration Fund in Elizabeth's name are gratefully accepted.
