CARTER, Jacqueline Roberts
It is with profound sadness that the family of Jacqueline Roberts Carter (nee Cull) announce her passing, early in the evening, January 5th, 2008. Born October 6th, 1921 in Port-Aux-Basques, Newfoundland, she would go on to touch the lives of many people, primarily as a Registered Nurse. Earning her RN in St. John’s, Nfld during the Second World War, she took her role as a healer seriously and tended to nearly all of her immediate and extended family members over the years as not only nurse, but as sister, mother, wife, grandmother and great-grandmother. After moving to Nova Scotia, from Corner Brook, in 1971, she made close friends quickly. She was a duty nurse at the campus clinic at Acadia University in Wolfville, until her retirement in 1986. She had friends of all ages during this period. Her ability to connect with, not only people her own age, but with the many students she tended to, was a significant source of pride for her family. She was so many things to so many people allowing those around her to learn from that. When she was not tending to patients, she could be found playing Bridge, making one, or several, of her famous cherry cakes, watching a Deanna Durbin movie, or offering her definitive opinion on various current affairs and the state of the universe. She also contributed years of enthusiastic service to the Girl Guides of Canada. She was, however, above all, dedicated to the children in her life. Grandchildren never got old and there was always someone who needed to “gargle with warm salt water” until she could get to them and “have a look” at a sore throat. For these things and so much more we will be forever grateful. She is survived by sisters, Vera (Etobicoke), Theodora, (Corner Brook) and Shirley (Toronto), her three children, John (Linda) Halifax, Margaret (David) Mississauga and Peter (Charlotta) Toronto, special daughter-in-law Pam Carter and by her six grandchildren, Bob, Wendy, Terri, James, Emma and Pierre and two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Daniel. She was predeceased by her brother John (Jack) killed in action, WWII, her parents, John and Amelia Cull, sisters, Molly, Marguerite (Babs) and Sylvia and husband, Henry. Visitation will take place at Snow’s Funeral Home, Windsor Street, Halifax, Sunday, January 13th, 6-8 p.m. and funeral service to take place Monday, January 14th, 2 p.m. at St. Augustine’s Anglican Church, Purcell’s Cove Road, Halifax. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada or St. Augustine’s Anglican Church. Email condolences: condolences.snow@ns.aliantzinc.ca

FUREY, CONRAD
Baie Verte native Conrad Furey dies following long battle with cancer

HAMILTON - Canadian painter Conrad Furey has died following a long battle with colon cancer. He was 53. Furey’s wife says the Hamilton-based artist died in his sleep early Wednesday after falling into a coma on the weekend. “It was a very peaceful death,” Theresa Furey said.“It’s how he wanted to die - he wanted to die at home and without having any discomfort. And that we promised we would do.” She said she was by Furey’s side when he passed away, as was a nurse and another family member.
Furey’s daughter, Leah Furey, 26, lauded her father, also a sculptor, as a dedicated family man who was “extremely humble” about his talent. “He was a great father and a great husband and a great friend and just a great man in general,” she said. “He was extremely humble.”
Born in Baie Verte, Furey was known for colourful murals that were often inspired by his youth in Newfoundland. His work featured peaceful coastlines, wide-eyed fishermen on glassy waters and rugged landscapes softened by a playful style. Galleries in Ontario and Newfoundland staged numerous exhibitions of his work since 1977, according to a CV on his website.“Living away (from Newfoundland) means I can focus on the memories more easily,” Furey said of his work in 1987. “There’s less distraction. The years I spent growing up in Newfoundland, that’s where all these images come from.” Furey last saw his childhood home in June and July 2007, when the family returned to visit relatives and go fishing, said Theresa Furey. Months earlier, bouts of confusion suggested that cancer had reached his brain and Furey felt the end was near, she added. “He decided last May to stop his chemo so that he could just enjoy the rest of the life he had left,” she said.
Furey’s last piece was a Newfoundland-inspired triptych, a large private commission that was shipped to Scotland just after Christmas, she said. Things took a turn for the worse soon after. “As ill as he was, he managed to get all the energy to be able to put into that piece to finish it for this couple,” Theresa Furey noted. Visitation will be held today and Friday, and a funeral will be held Saturday in Hamilton.
