BAKER, Jonathan Paul
Passed on: January 1st, 2019

It is with great sadness we announce that Jonathan Paul Baker, known to friends and family as "Jonny B," passed away peacefully at the hospital on January 1, 2019, at the age of 37 years. Born on January 19, 1981, Jonny B grew up in Deer Lake where he attended Elwood Elementary for several years before relocating to St. John's. There, Jonny B was welcomed and cared for by the loving Goodwin family. He attended several schools, including MacDonald Drive Junior High and thoroughly enjoyed the Vera Perlin Program each summer. In his later years, Jonny B resided at the Hoyles Escasoni Complex then moved to Pleasantview Towers. Jonny B had an infectious smile. He had a love for music and an immeasurable passion for horses. He brought so much love and joy in our lives and to those who were around him. Jonny B will be missed every day by his parents Ivan Baker and Paula Campbell, his sister Jennifer, nephews Myles, Kalem and Delano (Paradise) and his grandparents Manson and Laura Bridger (Nicholsville). Jonny B will also be forever remembered by many aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, and so many special friends. We would like to thank the many doctors and nurses at the Health Sciences Centre for their support and care. Also, a heartfelt thank you to the management and staff of the Pleasantview Towers for their loving support throughout the years. Thank you to the Goodwin family for welcoming Jonny B and family into your loving home. We would also like to acknowledge the ongoing support from Janis King, Dryden Callan, Dave Hewlett, Dwayne Bedford as well as many close friends and family. Please join us in a celebration of Jonathan's life on Saturday, January 5th, at 2-4 pm at the Pleasantview Towers (East Tower Chapel/Multi-Purpose Room), 65 Newfoundland Drive, St. John's, Newfoundland. BATT, Howard Byron (Bud)
Born: June 13th, 1936

It is with heavy hearts, that the family of Byron (Bud) Batt announce his passing on Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at the age of 82 years. Byron (Bud) was born in Benoits Cove on June 13, 1936, the first of ten children born to Russell and Marjorie Batt. Dad met Mom in 1958 and they were married December 22, 1959 and were blessed with four children. Dad was a dedicated and hardworking man but always made time for his family. Our two week summer family vacation holidays were looked forward to by the whole family. Dad became a member of the Elks in 1970. He was a loyal, true and steadfast friend. Dad did not look for glory or accolades, but he was the quiet one in the background helping and ensuring things got done in a timely fashion. Bud was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth, parents Russell and Marjorie, in-laws Aaron and Annie Peddle, grandsons Owen Dean John Nilsson, Dallen Rodney Batt, daughter-in-law Mia Batt, brother Jim Batt, sisters-in-law Voira Batt, Deliah Batt, Margaret King, Shirley Hulan, Roella Peddle, Valerie Peddle, Mary Jones and brothers-in-law Gerald Peddle, Bill Jones and Richard Williams. Leaving to celebrate his life and keep his memory alive are his children: Byron (Dorothy), Joanne (Darcy), Clifton, and Russell (Candace). Grandchildren: Howard (Heather) and their sons Benjamin, Nicholas and Nathaniel, David (Eden) and their sons Daxten, Edwin Tammy, Duane, Elizabeth, Casey and CJ (Clifton Jr.). Brothers: Sam, John, Frank (Mary), Gordon (Judy) and Terry (Louise). Sisters: Joan Williams, Ena Rowsell (Bram) and Mary Batt (Derrick). In-laws: Gerald, Norman (Ann), Sterling, Ross (Diane), Prinzeline Laundry (Albert) and Clara Gillingham (Ralph). A large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends will also feel the emptiness left by Bud's passing. A visitation for family and friends will be held from Country Haven Funeral Home, 167 Country Road, on Friday, January 4 and Saturday, January 5, 2019 from the hours of 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A funeral service will be held at St. Michael and All Angels Anglican Church, Park Drive, Corner Brook on Sunday, January 6, 2019 at 2 pm with Reverend Roberta Woodman officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Patricia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Elks and Royal Purple Fund for Children. It is with heavy hearts that the families of Mary Lavina Brake nee Parsons announce her passing at the Bonne Bay Health Centre, in Norris Pt., NL, on Thursday, January 3rd, 2019, at the age of 83 years. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories her children; Hilda (Freeman) Murrin, Susan Brake (Aubrey Lee), Elaine (Derek) Brown, Millicent Barker, Shelley Roberts, Shawn Brake (Donna Gavin), Derek Brake (Kristina Budisa), and Joseph Norris (Doreen), her 18 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, her siblings; Harvey Parsons, Noble Parsons, and Daisy Coughlin, mother's special friend; Lilly Payne, and her home care worker; Shirley Smith, mother was predeceased by her husband; Valance Brake, her partner; George Clarke, her parents; Lucy & George Parsons, her sisters; Ruby (Jim) Barnes, and Rosie (Don) Parsons, her sons-in-law; Clyde Earle, Mike Barker, & Joe Hovey, & her sisters-in-law; Ivy Parsons and Valsie Parsons. It is with great sadness that the family at the late Toby Amelia Brake announce her sudden passing at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019 at the age of 43 years. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories, her mother Margaret Brake (Simms); her sons: Trevor & Alex Taylor; her siblings: Meta (Ray) Perry, Edward Jr. (Christa); her special sister Jacqueline (Tommy); her 2 nieces: Rae-Lynn & Kennedy; her 5 nephews: Jack, Raymond, Ethan, Kevin and Tyler; also leaving to mourn a large circle of aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends. Toby was predeceased by her husband Harold Taylor; her father Edward Brake; and her mother-in-law Judy Taylor. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories his wife Marion; children: Cindy (Cecil), Terry (Huena), Danny (Wendy), Debbie, Jackie (Harvey) and Ed (Paula); grandchildren: Kyle, Robert, TJ, Christina, Matt, Danielle, Brad, Devon, Leah, Lance, Tara and Jillian; great-grandchildren: Juliet, Nathan, Zoey, Emily, Jordan, Bree-Ella and Wyatt, nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law, other relatives and friends. After a long courageous battle with cancer Wanda Dennis passed away peacefully surrounded by her family and friends on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook at the age of 63 years. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories her devoted husband Fred; children: Deanna Hann, Lorie Horton, Stephen (Lesley) Walsh, Maria Walsh (Blair) Park, stepchildren: Paula Dennis, and Jeanne (Martin) Piercey; grandchildren: Jacob, Jordyn, Eric, Noah, Lilah, Hannah, and Emma, stepchildren: Benjamin, Daniel, Dillon, Nathan, and Andie; father: Edmund Gushue; siblings: Paul (Karen), Gary (Margaret), David (Bernetta), Tony, Peter, Regina (Tom), Keith and a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her mother Dinah Gushue, brother Brian, grandparents Elizabeth and Edmund Gushue and Susie and Arthur Compton. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Alphonsus Kenneth Farrell announce his passing at Humber River Hospital, Toronto ON, on Thursday January 17, 2019 at the age of 77 years. He will be sadly missed by his 3 sons Darin Farrell, Justin and Jonathon Bennett, 3 daughters Monique, Amanda and Lori Farrell, 2 sisters Rita Woods and Mary Foley, 5 grandchildren Amber Aucoin, Sofia and Joshua Bennett, Shannon and Dillon Herritt and a large circle of relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Alphonsus and Frances Farrell, brothers Jack, Tom, Ralph, Stan Farrell, and 2 sisters Susan Baird and Doris Russo. Hackett (nee Benoit) announce her peaceful passing while surrounded by her loving family on Monday, January 14th, 2019 at the Corner Brook Long Term Care Centre at the age of 89. Margaret was born April 27th, 1929 on Woods Island, she was a loving wife to her husband Patrick John Hackett (Jack) of 64 years, who predeceased her on November 17, 2013. She will be lovingly remembered by her 5 sons: Patrick (Sandra), Leo, Charlie (Savi), Christopher (Lisa), Eugene (Tina) and 4 daughters: Caroline (Carrie) Power (Tom), Lillian Dawe (Guy), Bernadette Porter (Don), and Margie Penney (Dennis); 16 grandchildren: Norm Pennell (Tammy), Mark Hackett (Sherri), Rod Hackett (Judy), Dion Porter (Corina), Justin Porter (Stephanie), Stephen Power, Catherine Power, Matthew Dawe (Jenn), Christopher Dawe (Jessica), Sabrina Price (Steven), Jonathan Hackett, Ashley Hackett, Patrick and Trisha Hackett, Claire and Sara Penney; nine great-grandchildren; Sarah and Kaitlyn Pennell, Nathan and Cole Hackett, Hailey Hackett, Emma Porter and Naomi Porter, Avery Dawe and Kaiden Price; sister Rita O'Connell; sisters-in-law Rita Bennett, Genevieve Bennett and Isabel Compagnon; brother-in-law Joseph Bourgeois; as well as numerous nieces, nephews , other relatives and friends including staff and residents at Corner Brook Long Term Care. Hers was a long and rich life. The family of the late Mary Robertson Hann (nee Mann) announce her passing on Monday, January 28, 2019 at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital at the age of 98 years. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her children: Donald Hann, Alan Hann, Maureen Bennett, Mairi Crocker and Moira Moore (Michael); grandchildren: Steven (Paula), Marc (Tristan), Weston (Tiffany), Coady, Katrina (Matt), Adam (Katy), Christopher and Katie; great-grandchildren: Kate-Lynn, Harrison, Mary, Taylor, Paige, Ethan, Leon, Oliver, Harry and Liam; sister Marion Hann; brother Ian Mann; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. It is with great sadness that the family of the Late Mary Hartson announce her passing at the Western Health Long Term Care Centre in Corner Brook, NL on Monday, January 14, 2019 at the age of 85 years. She was predeceased by her late husband, Adolphus Hartson, and predeceased by her parents: John and Winnifred Pinksen, brothers: Norman, Ron, Eric and sister Marjorie. She will be forever missed, loved and remembered by her children: Val (Linda), Wally, Dianne (John), Ollie (John), Lionel (Claude), Wayne, Bernice, Brian; grandchildren: Janice, Stephen, Jeremy, Janna, Scott, Stuart, Angela, Suzanne, Catherine, Meghan, and John, and 10 great-grandchildren. HEWLIN, Elvena Mary (Hulan)

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our beautiful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Elvena Mary Hewlin aged 92 years. She cared for all of us with the greatest passion one could have for her children from our births to her death. She passed away on January 14th, 2019 at the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville lovingly surrounded by her family. Left to mourn her passing are her children Verbon (Jean) Hewlin, Iris (Larry) LaVallee, Velda (Ronnie) McIsaac and Glen (Marilyn) Hewlin. Grandchildren- Christopher, Heather, Susan, Penny, Justin, Ian, Ashley and Cody. Great-Grandchildren- Hailey, Kobi, Luca, Miquel, Wesley, Samuel, Abigail, Elyse, Hudson and Meyer. Also left to mourn are her siblings; brother Jerry (Mary) Hulan, sisters Vivian Brake, Ruby Gillam, Pearl Hulan, Una (Don) Gillam, sister-in-law Roma Hulan and many other family members and friends. Elvena was predeceased by her husband of 53 years Harvey Hewlin in 2000, her parents Ellen Jane and Jeremiah Hulan and by her brothers Ellis, James Rodney and George. In keeping with Elvena's wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place on Wednesday January 16th, 2019 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at Russell's Funeral Home 57 Prince Rupert Drive in Stephenville. Funeral Services will take place on Thursday January 17th, 2019 at 2 pm from St. Augustine's Anglican Church on Hillview Avenue in Stephenville with Rev. Kris Gosse presiding with inurnment to follow in the Hillside Interfaith Cemetery on the Hansen Highway. It is with heavy hearts that the family of the Late Orpah Huelin announce her passing on Friday, January 11, 2019 at Dr. Charles Legrow Health Centre in Port aux Basques, NL at the age of 97 years. She was predeceased by her husband Douglas; grandchildren: Michael, Colin and son-in-law Reginald Gill. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her daughters: Jane Gill, Glenna (Lloyd) Hulan, Violet (Lester) Letto, Bertha (Kevin) Butt; brother James Gale; sister Mariah Walters. She will be greatly missed by her 11 grandchildren: Cynthia, Paul, Corey, Robyn, Melanie, Jacqueline, Mark, Douglas, Bradley; 16 great- grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild as well as many other family and friends. , age 78, Dartmouth, formerly of Corner Brook, NL, passed away January 17, 2019 in QEII Health Sciences VG Site, after complications from cancer. Born in Petries, Curling, NL, she was a daughter of the late Isabella (MacLennan) and Alex Dunphy. Isabel cared for youth for many years while working for the John Howard Society. She was known for her kindness, generosity and sense of humour. She enjoyed cooking a good meal for friends, and was well known for her bread making. Isabel was also a very talented artist, and enjoyed travelling with her best friend Carmel Cowan. She is survived by daughter, Lisa (Paul) Hatcher, Dartmouth; son, Edward Kaj, Thunder Bay; beloved daughter in-law, Mabel; grandchildren, Kathleen and Thomas Hatcher; Edward Kaj. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held 4 - 7 PM Tuesday January 22 at her daughter's residence, 37 Coventry Lane. It is with sadness that the family of Catherine Gordon Rowsell announce her peaceful passing on January 10th at Western Memorial Hospital, Corner Brook NL. "Kay" lived a happy life and left us at the ripe age of 91. Born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, Kay married Alex Rowsell of Corner Brook NL. After the 2nd Word War they moved to Corner Brook, built their home, and raised their daughter Catherine. She was predeceased by Alex in 1992, her brother Laurie, and granddaughter Susan. Along with her daughter and husband Keith (Piercey), she leaves to celebrate her life; grandson Douglas and his wife Lori (King), great-granddaughter Ainsleigh and great-grandson Keegan, as well as many friends and acquaintances who will remember her as a person with a kind and generous heart. She was one who always looked at the good side of things, never complaining - a special person to find in this world. Kay had Scotland in her heart at all times and enjoyed her involvement with Scottish Dancing, The Scottish Heritage Society, the Burn's night dinners and memories of her close Scottish friends from as far back as 60 years. Trips home with wee Catherine reaffirmed her connection to all things Scottish. The family wish to give special thanks to; the care-givers - Yolanda Pennell, Pauline Colbourne, Chantelle O'Connell, Gloria Hayes, Geneva Hackett, and to the nurses and doctors at the Palliative Care unit. It is with great sadness that on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at the age of 88 years, Norman Lewis Simms of Corner Brook passed away. Norman will be sadly missed by his sons: Peter Simms (Joanne); Todd Simms (Sandi) and his grandchildren; Tori Simms, Jesse Simms and Bailey Simms. Norman is survived by his sister Dorothy Michelin of Labrador along with numerous nieces and nephews and extended family members. He is predeceased by his wife; Lillian M. Simms (October 17, 1996). Also, his parents; John James Simms and Bertha Simms of St. Anthony and his brothers; George, Robert, Frank, Reginald, Raymond, and his sisters; Jessie, Margaret, Jean, Catherine. We want to thank the staff at the Lohnes Complex for taking such good care of our Dad in the last few years. They made him laugh and smile and he also helped to entertain them on a daily basis. I'm sure they must have got tired of fixing his hearings aids and remote control. And thanks to those who provided him with that special piece of dessert at lunch time that he would always talk about to us on the phone. We also want to say special thanks to Gary Fisher and his wife Elizabeth along with their two girls Sabrina and Katie. They were like family to father and he looked forward to their regular visits and also the countless rides around town. Dad had many conversations with Gary and we are sure father enjoyed all the time they spent together. There is no way we can possibly thank them enough for all they have done to help Dad. It is great sadness that the family of Walter Tipple announce his peaceful passing at home. Walter leaves to mourn his wife Janet (Goodyear), son Danny, daughter Donna-Rae (son-in-law Terry Porter) and daughter Claudette (son-in-law David Winsor). Also left to mourn are his grandchildren Stephanie Tipple, Danielle Martin (Trevor), Jennifer Porter, Jacob Porter and Billy Winsor (Kristina). His great-grandchildren Tori, Taylor and Ryan Martin and Sarah Winsor. His siblings Ruby Jennex (Dave), Jean Johnson, Melvin Tipple (Jean), Shirley Wall and Betty Tipple. His sister-in-law Betsy Cayo (Don), brother-in-law David Goodyear and brother-in-law Paul Goodyear (Sharon). Walter was predeceased by his parents Raymond and Alice Tipple, sister Joan and her husband Jim, sister-in-law Isabel Tipple, brother-in-law Harold Johnson and brother-in-law Philip Wall, grandson Joey Winsor, his mother and father-in-law Scott and Marjorie Goodyear, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Jim and Helen Goodyear. Also left to mourn are his many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. Walt loved a good game of cards with friends and family especially a few hands of poker with his poker buddies. He also loved trying to catch a few trout on Bonne Bay Pond during summer or winter. Walt's last few months were made easier by the exemplary care and compassion given by Dr. Simon Reznick and the palliative care nurses and team of VCH in Sechelt. Cremation has been done under the care of Devlin Funeral Home in Gibson's BC. No service will be held as per Walt's request. The funeral service will follow at 2 PM on Saturday, February 2, 2019 from Country Haven Chapel with Rev. Malcolm Palmer officiating. In keeping with the family's wishes, cremation will take place with internment at a later date. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Shirley May White announce her passing at the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital on Saturday, January 19th at the age of 87 years. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are her three sons: Derek (Gerri) of Doyles, Bernie (Trudy) of Enfield, N.S., John (Cathy) of Burlington, ON; five daughters: Marjorie (David) Arnott of Tillsonburg, ON, Sylvia (Ronnie) Hayden of Stephenville, Marlene Fowlow of Stephenville, Esther (Kevin) Dollard of Stephenville, Mary (Jim) Thomson of Stratford, ON; one brother Fred of Irishtown; five sisters: Eva Wight of Deer Lake, Elizabeth Dennis of Deer Lake, Ada (Calvin) Goosney of Qualicum Beach, BC, Doris Snow of Kippens, Ruby (Jim) Tomeke of St. Paul, Minn.; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and a large circle of relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Jean and Arthur Dennis; husband Bernard; grandson Jason White; brothers Arthur, Don, Chris; sisters Dorothy, Joan, Sandra and a large circle of relatives and friends. Visitation will take place at Russell's Funeral Home, 57 Prince Rupert Drive, Stephenville on Monday, January 21st from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral service will take place on Tuesday, January 22nd at St. Stephen's Parish, West St., Stephenville at 10 am with interment to follow at the Hillside Interfaith Cemetery on the Hansen Highway. In lieu of flowers, donations in Shirley's memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
