BRUCE, Hugh
August 18 1920 - Feb 15 2008

Under a loving and Holy light a radiant star danced in the sky tonight. It is with heavy hearts the family announces the peaceful passing of our dearly loved father and grandfather, Hugh Bruce. Hugh was born and raised on the Block, Searston, Newfoundland.
On January 6, 1941 he left home with the Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit bound for Scotland. He traveled to the USA, Canada, Africa and Europe while serving with the Royal Navy. After the war he worked for Bowater's and then at the power plant on the Harmon Air Force Base.
In 1954 he married Vera Gillis of the Highlands, NL and they built their home on Hansen Highway. In 1955 Hugh began to sell insurance with Sunlife Assurance Co. and like many who love what they do he excelled at it. In 1985 he married Lois Gale who was his dear, long time companion until her death four months ago. He retired at the age of eighty-three yet remained a pillar of the community. Groups such as the Cancer Society, the Stephenville Bridge Club, the Legion, the Rotary Club, the Stephenville Festival, family and friends both near and far, often benefited from his energy and insight.
A fellow veteran and long time friend recently said "Hughie never did change. He had the same mannerisms, the same way, the same voice his entire life. He was the sauciest Newfoundlander to ever set foot overseas." When certain of his point, Dad could be outspoken to the point of belligerence but he would also be the first to rescue a sick kitten or find food for a hungry child. He was intelligent, courageous, determined and strong. A proud Newf, he loved the outdoors and cherished his family and his friends.
Hugh was predeceased by his daughter Kathleen, his wife Lois, parents John A. and Selina Ann (Downey) Bruce, brothers Leo (Henge), Walter (Sheila), Neil (Marie) and Toby. Left to mourn our loss and retell his stories are his children and grandchildren Peggy (Ken) Alec, Freda and Maggie; Deanna, Chantel (Irnej), Tamara, Cassidy; Hughie (Lynn), Dominique and Jodie; Barbara Ann (Brett), Mark, Patricia (Chris), Breann; Rebecca, Kaeluis and their mother, Nanny Vera. Also joining in this time of mourning are Hugh's stepchildren, Michael (Jackie) LeFebvre and Melissa Henderson and their children Emily, Lauren, Wesley and Morgan; his brother Alexander (Betty) Bruce and sisters Rosetta Bruce, Martina Cormier, Stella West and Bernice (Corp) Janes; a large extended family and many friends. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Children's Wish Foundation or to any charity of ones choice would be very much appreciated. Funeral services will be held at St. Stephen's Parish, West Street, Stephenville on Saturday, February 23, 2008 at 10:00am. Refreshments and time to reminisce will follow at the Royal Canadian Legion, 208 Oregon Dr. At Hugh's request, his cremated remains will be interred at a later date.
