WINSOR, Byron Watson
Was born in Petries Crossing on June 29, 1925, the middle child of Levi and Gertrude (White) Winsor, who were stationed there as Salvation Army Officers. He had an older brother Bernard of Corner Brook and a younger brother Bruce of St. John's. At the age of nine years, his mother passed away; subsequently, his father married Susanna Goulding; together, they had a son Bobby. Byron spent his early years in a number of Newfoundland communities including St. Anthony, Pilley's Island, Burin, Wesleyville, Bay Roberts and Musgravetown. At the age of 17, he moved to Corner Brook and in August, 1948, he married Wavey Robbins, also a child of Salvation Army Officer parents. Byron worked as a Salesman with Harvey and Company for 18 years; in 1965, he started his own business, Winsor's Wholesale. At age 59, he was advised to retire from work for health reasons. In retirement, he spent countless hours distributing the Salvation Army Sunday Worship service in the form of cassette tapes to church members who were unable to attend in person. The delivery of a cassette included a 'short' visit. He also provided transportation for those who required such to attend church services on Sunday, and to doctor's appointments, to do banking, grocery shopping, etc. during the week. Although he rarely spoke about his Faith, it was evident in his daily living; in the honesty and integrity of his spoken language and behavior, in his vigilance to recognize human need and to do everything in his power to address that need, and his intolerance of injustice. He enjoyed his work, was devoted to family, enjoyed fishing and berry picking, but his greatest joy was playing a brass instrument in The Salvation Army band. He first played at age 14, and was an active bandsman in The Corner Brook Temple Band for 68 years, retiring at age 86. At various times, he played cornet, trombone, baritone, and drums. He loved to reminisce about band trips to Nova Scotia and Bermuda, and summer band camps. In 2013, declining health brought about a move to Kelowna, B.C. to be closer to family. Predeceased by his parents and three brothers, he leaves to mourn his wife of sixty-eight years, Wavey, his three children and their spouses: Paul (Shirley), Ruth (Neil) Vermeulen, Glenda (Don Russell); four grandchildren: Joanne Murray (Sheldon), Carolyn Scaife (Marc), Carmen Vermeulen and Nigel Vermeulen; five great-grandsons: Kelsey, Crawford, Tyler, Lyam and Kaiylum, as well as many friends and relatives. A graveside memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery, 1991 Bernard Avenue under the direction of Springfield Funeral Home, Kelowna, BC, Lt. Darryl Burry officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Salvation Army Corner Brook Temple, P.O. Box 20084, Corner Brook, NL, A2H 7T5. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.springfieldfuneralhome.com 250-860-7077.
