Passed peacefully away at Glenbrook Lodge, St. John's, on Saturday,
April 11, surrounded by those she loved, Jean B. Alcock
(nee Lindsay) in
her 96th year. Predeceased by her husband Arthur (Hap)
in 1998. Jean felt great pride in her family, and loved them unselfishly
– as mother to David (Gwen) and Bill (Marliese); grandmother (Nana)
to Bruce (Tina), Vancouver, Lindsay Glynn (Bob), Erin and Philip (Courtenay),
Topsail; great-grandmother (Nana Jean) to Alex and Nathan (Topsail),
Olivia and Otto (Vancouver); sister to Bill Lindsay, Paradise and Elizabeth
Palmer, PEI; aunt to Bill and Heather Lindsay, Bob, Terry, Andy Palmer
and Kim Nickerson., Sharing their loss are relatives in Canada and
the UK, as well as a large circle of cherished friends. The family
acknowledge with gratitude the gentle care given to Jean by the staff
of Glenbrook Lodge. Cremation has taken place. The family will be receiving
visitors at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John's,
from 7-9 p.m. Monday, April 13th and from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9
p.m. on Tuesday, April 14th. A service of Thanksgiving will
be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, April 15th, 2009
at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place in Corner Brook at a later date.

(Bert) Baldwin announces his passing on April 8, 2009 at

Western Memorial Regional Hospital, Daisy Bishop at

St. John's and Donald (Louise), Corner Brook; nine grandchildren and

friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur; daughter Linda Colbourne
and parents, Mabel and Charles McFatridge. Daisy was a Graduate of St.
Michaels Convent in St. George's and Bishop Spencer College, St. John's.

Passed away after a courageous 20 year battle with cancer on Wednesday,

Brothers at the age of 66 years. Connie was an inspiration
to all who knew her. She fought cancer with great courage, dignity and
a wonderful sense of humour. She lifted the spirits of everyone around

Howell) announce her passing on April 1st,

her children, Robert (Norma) Hicks and Barbara (Kalvin) Penney; her six
loving grandchildren, Michael (Shelly) Hicks, Andrew (Cheryl) Flynn,

and Christopher Hicks of Calgary, Alberta; and one great grandchild,
baby Ava Adeline Flynn. She will also be remembered by sister, May Soper

She was predeceased by her husband, Chesley in 1993, her sisters, Winnifred
and Lily, and her brother, Bronson. Adeline loved life and lived it to
the fullest until the end. She was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary
of the Royal Canadian Legion, where she enjoyed weekly card games and
Bingo. She also enjoyed the card games and weekly social events at the
Echo Club as well as her weekly bowling league. She will be sadly missed

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Stanley
Jesso announce
his passing at the Bay St. George Long Term Care Centre on Sunday,
April 5th 2009 at the age of 80 years. He will be
sadly missed by his three brothers; John (Geraldine) and Raymond both
in Kippens and Cecil (Nora) in Stephenville, his six sisters; Mary (Andrew)
Bennett, Theresa (Tom) Hughes, Jenny MacPherson, Margaret Wall, Adelle
Jesso all in Stephenville and Rona Neville in Sudbury Ont, along with
many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his
parents Arthur and Louise Jesso and by his sister Nora Baker. Funeral
services will take place on Tuesday, April 7th, 2009 at 10 am from St.
Stephen's Parish on West Street with interment in the Hillside Interfaith
Cemetery on the Hansen Highway. Friends may call at Russell's Funeral

inspiration to all who knew him. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and

years. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Chesley; son:
Carl (Nancy); daughters: Theresa (Mark), Barbara (Glenn), Mary (Frank);
eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren; sisters: Grace, Ada
and Jane; brothers: Joseph, Chesley and George; as well as nieces, nephews,
other relatives and friends. She is predeceased by her parents: Wilson
and Minetta Legge of Heatherton; son: Gordon; sister: Georgina and brother
Charles. Beatrice devoted over 50 years of service to her church and
was a long time member of Three Rivers Hospital Association and the Royal
Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Special recognition to Mary, Beatrice's
loving daughter who devoted eight years of taking care of her mother.
Special thanks to all of Beatrice's home care workers and the Palliative
Care team. Visitation will take place from St. George's Anglican Church,

RICH, Leonard Frank (Len)
1938-2009
We regret to announce the death of Leonard Frank (Len) Rich on April
13, 2009, in North Bay, ON following a brief courageous battle with cancer.
He was 71. Len was born and raised in the small Upstate New York town
of Whitehall. After eight years of US military service he settled in
Newfoundland in 1966. His careers spanned more than four decades, from
sales rep and sales manager to automotive dealer and entrepreneur in
the field of tourism. His greatest passions were fly fishing and writing
and as a columnist, author and advocate for responsible stewardship he
left a profound legacy, touching the lives of many throughout the writing
and fly fishing worlds. Len discovered and later developed a fly-in sportfishing
lodge in Labrador he named Awesome Lake Lodge. He operated that business
for 10 years before semi-retirement. He authored several books, including
Newfoundland Salmon Flies and how to tie them, Best of In The Woods,
Fly Fishing Tips and Tactics, Rivers and Woods, So you want to be an
outfitter, Memoirs of a fly fisher, Tales of Christmas (Editor), and
his latest Bill Bennett: Pioneer Bush Pilot and Outfitter. He also wrote
hundreds of magazine articles for various national and International
publications. During his careers he was employed by the Newfoundland
government as Hunting & Fishing Development Officer and by the Atlantic
Salmon Federation (ASF) as manager of Special Events. Len was also employed
by Corona College in Grand Falls-Windsor as Director of Communications
and Tourism Training. He and his late wife Ruby developed and operated
businesses in Clarenville, NL, known as Whitehall Country Inn and The
Grapevine.
He was predeceased by Ruby in 2004. He served three terms
as President of the Labrador Outfitters Association and three terms as
Eastern Director of the Outdoor Writers of Canada (OWC). An award winning
writer, he was recognized by the New England Outdoor Writers Association
and the Outdoor Writers of Canada for his books and articles and in 1991
received the coveted Canada Recreational Fisheries Award for “writing
that influenced a generation of recreational fishers.” In 2007 he was
selected to receive the OWC's Jack Davis Mentorship Award for his work
with up and coming writers. He led the OWC Mentorship Program and for
a decade he hosted the Creative Writing forum on the Sympatico Internet
site. Throughout his adult life he made Newfoundland his home, but recently
lived in Orangeville and North Bay, ON sharing his life and love with
his partner Susan Buckle. He is survived by brothers Wayne, Shrewsbury,
Vermont; Keith, Hoosick, NY; sister Dawn in Massachusetts; Susan and
her children Cameron and Lianne Honeyborne; sons Len Jr. (Chantal) of
Lewisporte, NL and Ken of Summerside, NL; daughters Lori (Tony) of Fort
Nelson, BC, and Tammy of Summerside, NL; stepson Tony Blackmore and stepdaughter
Roxane Bailey (Chris) of St. John's, NL; and grandchildren Cassidy, Alicia,
Evan, Tyson, Tyler, Mallory, Morgan, Rebecca, Daniel, Kennedy, and Andrew.
Funeral will be held in Clarenville, NL Saturday April 25 at Fewers Funeral

YOUNG, Margaret Blanche (nee Heath)

January 14th, 1924 - April 15th, 2009
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Margaret
Blanche Young announce her passing on Wednesday, April
15th at the Western Memorial
Regional Hospital at the age of 85 years. She leaves to mourn with fond
and loving memories her children: Dianne (Calvin) Penney, Chris (Judy)
Young, Judy (Fred) Byrne, Kerry (Gail) Young and Beryl (Clarence) Byrne,
grandchildren: Robert, Corey, Michelle, Deanne, Michael, Lori, Krista,
Susan, Jessica, Krystal, Jeffrey and Terri-Lynn, great-grandchildren:
Brian, Dylan, Brendon, Kaitlyn, Jacob, Adam, Amy, Kameron, Emma and Noah,
sisters and brothers: Linda (Herbert) Vincent, Harold Heath, Winnie Oxford,
Yvonne Heath, Tony Heath, Vera (Max) McCave and Leah (Reg) Prittchard.
As well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and close
friends. She was predeceased by her husband Paul Young, parents Edmund
and Effie Heath, sister Bride Heath and brother Ralph Heath. Friends
may visit Fillatre's Funeral Home, 4 St. Mark's Avenue on Friday 2-4 & 7-9
pm. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 18th at 2:00
pm from Humber United Church with Rev. Kathy Brett officiating. Interment
to follow at Mount Patricia Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy flowers
graciously accepted or donations may be made to a Charity of one's Choice.
