BRUCE, Michael Joseph
Jersey Side, Placentia Bay

Passed peacefully away at Shirley's Haven (Personal Care Home), St. Anthony on June 14, 2003 with his family at his side. Dad was born on 3 November 1915 in the town of Long Harbour, Placentia Bay to the late James and Martha (Murray) Bruce. Dad served in the Merchant Navy in World War II. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, honorary member of the Star of the Sea Association, past member of the Knights of Columbus and involved in several community interests and activities. Not formally schooled, yet he was our greatest teacher! To all who had the privilege of knowing him, Dad was the kindest, most gentle, loving and Christian man who graced your path. Amongst the many of life's lessons that he lovingly taught us through example, the greatest of these are love, respect, kindness, compassion, honesty, responsibility and gratitude. We will forever treasure his vivid and captivating stories of life as crew and Skipper of the "James and Martha" in the 1930's. A devoted, loving and patient father and husband, Daddy taught us the joys of trouting, ice-fishing, snaring, picking berries, kitchen parties and story telling. He loved for us to visit, welcoming us with open arms and always thanked us for "coming home". Home, family, friends, community and life itself meant everything to him. We will love you forever and miss you always! Fair winds and following seas! Leaving to mourn his loving family, nine children: Anna Marie (Chuck) Morrow, Martha (Paul) White, Joanie, Pat (Genevieve), Willie (Brenda), Alice (Randy) McWhirter, Richie (Rita), Cathy (Bill) Hayter, Michael & special friend, Agnes. Also leaving three brothers: Din (Camille), Jim, Tom (Sophie) and two sisters: Kittie (Pat), Alice (Pat Kelly) and an extensive circle of relatives and friends. Predeceased by loving wife, Betty (May 2002), brother, Maurice and sister, Sus. Special thanks to Dr. O'Keefe, Father Lainey, staff of Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital and the kind and compassionate owners and staff of Shirley's Haven.
