URBAN, Constance (Colette)
Born: January 29th, 1952
Passed on: June 16th, 2013

Multi-Disciplinary Performance Artist, Teacher, Entrepreneur and Visionary. Born in Denver, Colorado, she spent most of her childhood in Michigan and North Carolina. After earning a BFA from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and an MFA from University of Victoria, she began a career teaching art in universities that extended from Western to Eastern Canada, while at the same time producing an impressive body of art work, mainly in the form of performances and installations. She retired from University of Western Ontario in 2007 to fulfill a dream, the product of which became Full Tilt, a multi-faceted business on the west coast of Newfoundland, which included an organic farm, an artist residency, a small gallery and two circa-1870 Guest Houses. Following Colette's most recent workshop at Full Tilt, Marlene Creates and Don McKay, two workshop participants, had this to say: "Colette's name for her artistic centre in Newfoundland is entirely appropriate: she has been as Full Tilt in her life as she is in her art. Her performances are distinguished by a fearless imagination given dramatic realization. Often it seems that images from deep in the unconscious had stepped into ordinary life. As anyone who has been lucky enough to meet Colette, or have a residency at Full Tilt Creative Centre can attest, her artistic achievement is matched by an enormous generosity of spirit. As a ground-breaking artist, a great spirit, and a friend, Colette will always be an inspiration." Her many art works have been exhibited nationally and internationally, and are included in many private and public collections. She was Professor Emerita of University of Western Ontario, and in May 2012, she was elected as a Member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. A retrospective exhibition of Colette's art, titled "Incognito", will take place in October 2013 at Museum London, in London, Ontario. Colette is survived by her mother, Dorothy, of Stratford, Ontario; her father, Wilfrid, of Greensboro, North Carolina; and her sister, Julie, and brother-in-law Roger Lilak, of Petoskey, Michigan. Her friends, many of whom traveled great distances in her final months to personally bid her farewell, are too numerous to list.
Those we hold most dear never truly leave us. They live on, in the kindnesses they showed, the comfort they shared and the love they brought to our lives. Colette lived a lot, loved a lot, cared a lot. She will be greatly missed.

VIVIAN, Eugene Oldford
Passed in: St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
Passed on: June 19th, 2013

It is with heartfelt appreciation for all he did for his family and others, that his children announce the passing of Eugene ("Bibs") Oldford Vivian. Bibs passed away peacefully, one week after a sudden diagnosis of terminal cancer, at the Health Sciences Centre, St. John's. He passed on June 19, 2013 at the age of 88 years, in the company of his children.
Eugene was the son of Owen Vivian and Lily Snowden of Squid Tickle, now called Burnside, Newfoundland. He is the grandson of Captain John W, Oldford, ship builder and skipper, of Burnside. Deeply admired by Eugene, Captain Oldford raised Eugene after Eugene lost his mother at age 7, his father at age 10, and his siblings prior to the same. Captain Oldford did so after he retired from skippering various fishing crews over the years in Bonavista Bay, and moved to Corner Brook to become a millwright in the newly constructed Pulp & Paper Mill.
It was in Corner Brook that Bibs met his future wife, Barbara Ellen Lee, daughter of Sherriff Peter Lee, and enjoyed 60 years of marriage with her before she passed away in August, 2010. He is also predeceased by his adoring son, Brian Lee; and leave to mourn, yet at the same time, celebrate his life, his children: John (Lisa Inder), Robert (Margie Noftall), Janet, Mark, Paul (Mark Pundzius) and Neil (Margret Huebsch); and his grandchildren: Eugene, Ella, Trista, Kelsey, Matthew, Fred, Paul, Jonathan, Theo, Hans, Liesel.
Bibs will be remembered for his many accomplishments in life, his incredible sense of adventure, and will be missed by all, including his outgoing and wonderfully close family friends in Corner Brook. After graduation from high school, he briefly became a stevedore and a pulp tester in Bowater's Lab before at the age of 17 he pursued his first of many passions, flying. He convinced the RCAF he was 18 and signed up for WWII to become a pilot. While studying the necessary mathematics in Guelph, Ontario, and awaiting an opening in aviation school, he took interim courses in wireless, at the request of the RCAF, and soon found himself acting as a wireless operator gunner (WAG). His B-24 Liberator crew joined up together in Bermuda, and on loan from the RCAF to the RAF, Bibs and his crew were then stationed in Ceylon, India (now Sri Lanka), and remained there completing 2 ½ years of service, flying far and wide and narrowly missing pitching in the China Sea on far too many occasion. He completed one of the longest flights in WWII, flying from Ceylon to Sumatra and Singapore. He was awarded the Burma Star; and after being asked to serve in the Berlin Air Lift following WWII, he decided to retire and return to Newfoundland in March, 1947, following his discharge. He served as a wireless operator in Gander, Newfoundland and then returned to Corner Brook where he next owned and operated his taxi and bus service which later became known as Mayfair Taxi and Car Rental.
In 1951, Bibs purchased his first of two planes, and flew as a bush pilot delivering mail and ill Newfoundlanders requiring medical care to the communities in Nfld. with more medical services at the time. Approached by Industrial Acceptance Corporation, a car financing institution, he opened and became Branch Manager of the first loan company in Corner Brook, other than chartered banks, Industrial Acceptance Corporation's Niagara Finance. Next, instead of accepting Niagara's request that he move to the mainland, Bibs became sales manager, assistant manager, and then manager for 30 odd years of Corner Brook Garage Ltd., a GM dealership, and its associated companies, Corner Brook Foundry and Machine Company, Harmon Motors, Tilden Rent-A-Car for all Nfld., Transport Ltd., and then an Esso Gas Station as well. Bibs also built and operated his own office building, Commerce Court on Main Street, Corner Brook.
While always managing to be available for his children, even coming home to have lunch with them each day, Eugene was involved in numerous community activities as a volunteer. He served as a member and director for numerous associations and Boards, up to 17 years with some, which have included the following: Sir Wilfred Grenfell College (Memorial University of Newfoundland) Advisory Board; Western Memorial Hospital Board including its Finance Committee; Central Guarantee Trust Co.; Nfld. & lab. Automobile Dealers Association (and past president); Corner Brook Chamber of Commerce; Kinsmen Club (also one of its founding members); Humber-St. Barbe R.C. School Board; School Tax Authority; Parish Council (Holy Redeemer); and the Bay of Islands Yacht Club. The later affiliation was a result of his decision to own two sailboats, the Janet Marie I and II, and teach his family how to sail the ocean as did their forefathers; while acquiring land and building a cottage at Pinchgut Lake for his children and grandchildren to enjoy. His numerous exploits as an adventurer and risk taker have left his family with many found memories, and humorous tales, some hard to believe in their reality when one considers how careful parents now must be: his children benefitted from his philosophy following WWII: "if you're not being shot at, you have nothing to fear" so enjoy life, and dance with me.
Eugene ("Bibs") will be resting at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Sunday from 7-9 p.m. and on Monday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place on Tuesday, June 22, at 9:30 a.m. from St. Pius X Parish. Internment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Donation in his memory may be made to the Last Post or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. YOUNG, Captain James "Jimmy"
Born: July 29th, 1949
Passed in: Stephenville, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
Passed on: June 2nd, 2013

James passed away peacefully, after a very short, yet, courageous battle with cancer at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville, NL, surrounded by family and friends at the age of 63 years. He leaves to mourn with fond memories, his wife of 40 years, Joanne, son Troy, daughter, Gwen and although canine, his "unofficial" grandchild Lexxi, whom he loved dearly with all his heart and was known to as "Poppy". He also leaves to mourn siblings: Regina, Dallas, Bertram (Helena), Joseph (Mary Anne) and their families and his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Wayne (Ellen), Gerry (Jan), Patricia and Linda and their families, respectively. Also, special friends Donnie and Joe, longtime workmates Bob and Luke, and too many more to mention, you were very dear friends of Dad and you are also considered part of his family. James was predeceased by his parents, Stanley and Delsia Young, and by his father and mother-in-law, Leo and Elizabeth Gaultois. James, known to many as "Jimmy" was a jack of all trades and despite many barriers during his early life, started his career driving truck for the Food Centre "back in the day". Over the years he acquired skills in many trades, including Carpentry, Welding and Mechanics, but as many know, his true love was the water - and working most of his life as a Fisherman was his passion. He especially loved being able to pass these things onto his son, Troy. He always wanted to try out new things and all through his life was interested in the newest and most modern fishing methods and loved the learning process. One of his proudest accomplishments was returning to school and completing his fishing Master Class 1 Certificate and becoming a designated "Captain". Although happiest on the water, he was a true Newfoundlander and loved being outdoors, whether at his cabin at Little Port Harmon or a t Mitchell's Pond, he was always involved in catching fish or game, cutting logs or just sitting around a fire listening to a good yarn or having a chat with another "skipper". Dad was also very proud of being a member of the Coast Guard Auxillary for over 25 years. At James' request, cremation has taken place. Family and friends may visit Russell's Funeral Home, 57 Prince Rupert Drive, Stephenville for Visitation on Wednesday, June 5th from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. Interment to take place at a later date. As per James' wishes, as expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations would be greatly appreciated to the Bay St. George Sick Children's Foundation in his honour. Our family would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all the nursing staff for their care and compassion during this very difficult time. Also, to our family and many friends who visited or contacted us during Dad's final days and provided such support and comfort - words cannot say enough - we will be forever grateful to you all, thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts. Even during his final days, Dad still had his moments where he expressed his sarcasm to us and made us laugh in a time of great sorrow. Thank you again to you all, it meant so much.
