CROSS, Doris (Herdman)
Corner Brook, NL
1918 - 2013

It is with great sadness that the family of Doris (Herdman) Cross, Corner Brook, announce her passing on July 29th, 2013 after a brief illness, age 95 years. Doris was born August 14, 1918 in Gateshead, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, to William and Martha (Laws) Herdman. Her father, an employee of Armstrong-Whitworth in Newcastle, accepted a position as Chief Accountant for the company during the construction of the paper mill. Doris was the last individual living in Corner Brook who came with the original families from England in the early 1920's. The Herdmans arrived in Corner Brook on June 10, 1924 - the day the Glynmill Inn served its first meal. They lived at the Glynmill Inn until the fall, when they moved into the first house completed in Townsite, at the bottom of East Valley Road. The following year, their own house was completed on Marcelle Avenue.
Doris graduated from the Corner Brook Public School at the age of 15. She then attended the Manchester High School for Girls, England, studying academics and business, graduating in 1936. Upon returning to Corner Brook, she received her driver's license, beginning a long driving career on whatever roads were available. She worked briefly at the Bank of Montreal, and then moved to Bowater's Head Office. During her 10 years at Bowater's, she was Secretary to Mr. Gerry Penny, then Chief Superintendent, Mr. Frank Silver, Mill Manager, and for a number of years, Mr. George Shaw, Assistant General Manager. Doris was the keeper of the corporate history of the paper town and was often consulted about the early years and then the very prosperous Bowater years. She was an athlete and enjoyed many sports well into her 70's, when hip replacements curtailed her activities. As a child, she swam and picnicked at Petries Point while her father played golf. She skated on the Glynmill Inn Pond. She learned tennis on the courts behind the Glynmill Inn, played badminton at the club on West Street and often competed in tournaments in Grand Falls. She was an executive member of the Corner Brook Ski Club, run by the company, at Massey Drive, and toured all the areas around the Twin Lakes, Mount Musgrave and George's Lake. Later, she became an avid golfer at the Blomidon Golf Club and also took up curling. She got lots of exercise rowing guests and friends on the Humber River at her father's Steady Brook cabin. She loved picnics and the outdoors and attributed her long life to her active lifestyle.
In 1946, she married Stan Cross, son of Captain Charles and Ethel (Horwood) Cross, another company family who came from St. John's in 1925. Doris was very active for many years in the Girl Guide movement, serving as a Brownie Leader, Brownie Trainer and Camp Adviser. She hung up her sleeping bag at the age of 75. She was a long time member of the choir of the First United Church, served on the Session and the Board of West Haven Lodge, was a member of the original "Girl's Club", the Bentley Club and the UCW. She enjoyed attending concerts and the Rotary Music Festival and sang with the Grenfell Choir. An important part of her life was the Beta Sigma Phi of which she was a member for 58 years. She was involved with many projects in the community through Beta. In 2001, she was awarded the Peace Medal by the YMCA for her volunteer work in the community. She loved bridge and played weekly until a month before her death. Above all, Doris was a lover of life and had an exceptional philosophy to accept what couldn't be changed and to make the most of life.
She was predeceased by her parents, William & Martha Herdman; son, Bill (2001); husband of 60 years, Stanley Winsor Cross (2006); and brother, Bob Herdman (2011). She is survived by her daughter Leslie, with whom she resided, and her partner Duke Newhook of St. John's; son Ted and wife Rosalind of Summerside, P.E.I.; two grandchildren: Ian Cross, Borden, ON and Susanna Cross, Nanaimo, BC; sister-in-law Joan (Tipping) Herdman, South Carolina; and Bob and Joan's daughters: Lynda, Robin, Susan and Janet and their families in the U.S.; sister-in-law Sarah Dredge, Corner Brook and other relatives and friends. Friends may visit Fillatre's Funeral Home, 4 St. Mark's Avenue, on Wednesday from the hours of 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 1st at 2:00 p.m. from First United Church, Park Street, with Rev. Harry Whitehorne and Marilyn Avery officiating. Interment to follow at the United Townsite Cemetery. All are welcome to attend a reception at Doris' first home, the Glynmill Inn. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the William Herdman Scholarship, established by her father in 1966 and awarded annually to a graduating student of Corner Brook High, or a charity of one's choice.
