HALLORAN, G. Avis
Born In: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Born: September 4th, 1932
Passed in: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Passed on: August 27th, 2016
"The Ave," born in Toronto, September 4, 1932, died peacefully on July 27, 2016 at her residence in Ottawa, at the age of 83, following a year of stoically enduring the effects of a major stroke. She is predeceased by her husband and best friend Bill (October, 2015), and survived by children Bill (Sheila), Anne (Brett), Robert (Tracy) and John (Alison) and grandchildren Ciara, Ceili, Callum, Matthieu, Mylène, Marlowe and Charlotte. Born and raised in Toronto, Avis graduated as a registered nurse from St. Joseph's Hospital in 1955, then bucked convention and pursued adventure and employment for two years in Santa Monica, California followed by three more on Long Island, New York where she also completed graduate studies in Obstetrics. In 1959, a blind date with a "shy and quiet+ R.C.M.P. officer who ended up "talking her ear off" led to a six-month courtship through correspondence, then a marriage proposal, and then a very successful marriage of 55 years. The relationship would see her following her husband's employment transfers that covered Canada from Vancouver, British Columbia to Corner Brook, Newfoundland. Avis' adventurous spirit saw her thrive in each new location and culture and her career adapted accordingly. From Obstetrics on Long Island to Public Health nursing in the rural communities outside of Corner Brook she enthusiastically embraced her surroundings. Seemingly born for the intelligent and compassionate role of nursing, she was also the consummate mother and kindly matriarch of a happy, loved family in a stable home. She was a beautiful person and will be remembered most for her kind heart, warm soul and unwavering selflessness and keen intellect. Her children will miss the availability of her wisdom, her pleasant company, her humour, her sense of occasion, and of course, Mom's cooking. They will remember too, with pride, the relationships she forged with their friends, spouses and children, and the welcoming home she and their father created. Letters written in her unmatched beautiful cursive hand will be cherished. In addition to her family, Avis leaves behind a wonderful, devoted and loving circle of friends who greatly enriched her life. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Garry J. Armstrong long-term care facility who demonstrated genuine care and compassion for Avis, which she greatly appreciated. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, the family suggests donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation (www.heartandstroke.com)
