SQUIRES
1st page
Married for 50 years, couple to say "I do" with all the glitz

by Frank Gale, Star Staff Writer

(photo with the caption Everett and Marina Squires will renew their vows in Corner Brook on their golden wedding anniversary today. They will relive the ceremony in fine style, this time with a wedding dress and a tuxedo, along with a reception at the Glynmill Inn - all things they couldn't afford the first time around. Also a photo of The Squires on their wedding day in 1953.)

Stephenville - Everett and Marina Squires are going a little further than renewing their vows on their golden wedding anniversary today - they are going through the full ceremony, this time with a real wedding dress and tuxedo. When they married on Aug. 14, 1953, they had little money to spend on the wedding. In fact, after the ceremony they went to a kitchen with the wedding party and a few guests and had sandwiches.

Marina (nee Leawood) is from New Chelsea in Trinity Bay. She moved with her family to Corner Brook at the age of 16. Everett was born and raised in Corner Brook. Marina worked with Green Lantern, but gave it up to be a housewife and mother.

When they met, Everett was working with Clarke Steamships, but left in 1968 when he took a job with Lundrigans and moved to Stephenville as plant manager of their Atlantic Design Homes division. He was in Stephenville a year before his wife moved to the town with their children.

At the time, most of the homes on the former Ernest Harmon U.S. military base were vacant. Plant workers stayed in a home, the only one to be occupied on a particular street. Marina remembers it being very lonely, especially where she had moved from another community.

At the time most people who lived in Stephenville didn't associate much with those who lived on the base, she said. The first few years were absolute torture for her, she said, until more people moved in and became neighbours.

Their three children, all girls, were born in Corner Brook. They include: Pauline of Lindsay, Ont., married to Paul Sinclair; Sandra of Winnipeg, Man., married to Brig. Gen. Paul McCabe; and Carol of Stephenville, married to Perry Bennett.

Everett was the eldest of eight children and had to wait for others in the family to get employment before he could get married, so that they could take over supporting the family. That's because his father died at age 47 and his grandfather was living in their house.

Everett and Marina were able to get married two years after they started dating when his brother, Elmer, and a sister found work. He said times were tough because there was not a lot of money to go around. That taught them to be frugal and appreciate what they have.

"We had three loving girls who were overprotective of us. Our philosophy was if we didn't have the money to buy it, then we would wait until we did and it all worked out for the best," Everett said.

As for going through the wedding again, 50 years later, Everett said the decision was fueled by his daughters. What makes it more special is that his wife is a cancer survivor, first learning she had the disease in 1982, he said.

The couple said they received positive replies from their original wedding party, including Faye (nee Squires) Simmonds, their maid of honour; Carl Stratton, their best man; Elmer Squires, groomsman; and Clarice (nee Windsor) Stratton, bridesmaid. They were originally married in the Pentecostal Church on Humber Road in Corner Brook by Pastor Ivan Whitt, who can't attend due to ill health.

This time around, the ceremony is taking place at the Pentecostal Church on Premier Drive in Corner Brook at 6:30 p.m. with Pastor Velmer Vessey performing the ceremony, and their reception by invitation at 7:30 p.m. at the Glynmill Inn.

At the church ceremony, the two will be offering greetings to each other, followed by vows that they have each written.

Although both agree Stephenville has been good to them, Marina said a good part of her heart is still in Corner Brook and she still serves as president of their Pentecostal Women's Group in the city, traveling back and forth to do so.

Another article about this couple appeared on page 17 (with a photo from their wedding day in 1953)
