Corner Brook resident 100 today
In 1940, Wilfred Osmond bid farewell
to the fishery and his hometown of Safe Harbour in Bonavista Bay North
and headed for Corner Brook. At 41 years of age, he figured that moving
to the burgeoning industrial town on the province's west coast would
offer his family a more stable lease on life. Today, 59 years after forging
his new life as a millwright at the Corner Brook paper mill, Osmond is
celebrating his 100th birthday.
"I was fishing and in the woods
all my life," Corner Brook's newest centenarian said of the first
four decades of his long life. "I liked living in Safe Harbour because
I was raised there. We used to go to Labrador in a schooner to fish.
The fishery was bad at that time because prices were low. The war broke
out in '39 and I thought it would be a good time to get a job (in Corner
Brook) because there were a lot of young men going away. So, I took a
chance on it."
The move to the west coast did offer the better life
Osmond hoped it would. He worked for the paper mill until his retirement
in 1964. "I was getting a full day's pay when I was working in the
mill," he said. "When I was fishing, I didn't know if I was
going to get anything. Working here was a lot more stable and I got a
living out of it for myself and my family."
Osmond and his wife
Flora had six children. Daughters Daisy Howe and Nita Colbourne still
reside in Corner Brook while son Charles moved to Grand Falls, where
he was principal of a trade school. A third daughter, Sophie Stratton
of Corner Brook, passed away three years ago while two sons, Percy and
Wilfred Jr., died before the family moved to the west coast. He attributed
his longevity to working hard and having good health. "I did everything
that I wanted to in my lifetime," he said. "Whatever came into
my mind, I was going to do it. I always did my own work with regards
to building a house and that kind of stuff."
He didn't mind sharing
his work ethic. He built two homes, one for himself and one for his son,
on Premier Drive. Osmond lived with his daughter right up until he was
99. Now a resident of Mountain View Estates on Hospital Hill, Osmond
has a fantastic view of the city from his quarters. Having watched Corner
Brook become more than just a mill town, Osmond said he likes the way
the city has developed in the past 60 years. "It's really grown
up," he said. "Corner Brook's doing alright and I got no complaints.
Getting the money to keep it going is the thing."
Osmond uses a
walker to help him get around. Sometimes he has to think about things
a little harder but, overall, he feels great. Living to be 100 years
old gives him a sense of accomplishment. To help celebrate his century
of life, he was the guest of honour at an open house at Mountain View
Estates this past Saturday night. More than 200 people, including 40
immediate family members, attended the event.
"My family has been
very good to me all these years," said Osmond. "They've always
stood by me." As for today, daughter Daisy and her family are planning
to take the birthday boy out to dinner.
