| The Archival materials is located in the BIS building on Queen's Road. The Society is currently developing an archives policy and its records are in the early stages of organization, so access to them is only by appointment with the Society president.
The BIS was established in 1806, the first of its kind in Newfoundland, founded as a benevolent and charitable organization in helping the poorer people of St. John's and region. The Archives includes the almost complete minutes of the Society from 1822 to present as well as various documentation of the Society's activities over the years. An inventory of the materials contained in the Archives is being prepared and can be made available for consultation when completed. The minutes are presently being transcribed and stored on computer for preservation and easier access. Some minutes have been microfilmed and are available at PANL.
