The National Archives of Canada preserves millions of records of national significance. These records are made available to Canadians through a wide variety of means such as publications, exhibitions, and special events, as well as reference and researcher services. The National Archives facilitates the effective management of federal government documents and preserves those which have archival value.

In addition to government records, the holding of the National Archives also contain private collections. Among others, these include the archives left by prime ministers and other politicians, business leaders, poets and artists. Also included are papers relating to religious groups, native and multicultural communities, woman and children and a large collection of documentary art, photographic items, audio-visual materials, maps and war information.
