Will

I, George Douglas Cook, being of safe and sound mind do hereby inscribe in my own handwriting this my last will and testament.
The distribution of my property shall be as herein set down.
Firstly, I appoint as my executor, Robert A. Templeton and do give him full power of attorney to use as he shall see fit for the proper execution of this will. Same shall become void when he shall deliver to my mother, Fanny Cook, a detailed statement of his administration and in return received a signed statement from her in which she expresses herself satisfied with said administration.
Secondly. The greater bulk of my property being two Insurance Policies one with the Crown Life Ins Co and another with the Commercial Travellers Association both policies making a total sum of thirteen hundred ($1300.00) dollars - the executor having claimed said policies successfully shall proceed to distribute this money as set down below. (Attached to this will is a statement signed by my mother, Fanny Cook who was the original beneficiary in which she renounces all claims to said policies and agrees to be governed by the terms of this will).

  1. To my brother John Stanley Cook I bequeath the sum of one hundred and fifty ($150.00) dollars.
  2. To my brother Arthur Bruce Cook I bequeath the sum of fifty $50.00
  3. To my sister Phyllis Eva Cook I bequeath the sum of fifty ($50.00) dollars.
  4. To my brother James Clyde Cook I bequeath the sum of fifty ($50.00) dollars with the advice that he start a savings bank account and add to it.

Thirdly, The following bequests are to cover debts that I have contracted during various times of my life and which I have not been able, or else through lapse of memory neglected to pay. If it should happen that before my death I shall have discharged any of the said debts receipts for same will be found attached herein thus rendering such bequests void.
(1) In the year 1923 I purchased from Dr. G.N. Murphy, Eye Specialist a pair of glasses costing $9.50. On this sum I paid a deposit of $2.00 thus leaving a balance to be paid of $7.50. Executor will pay same and get receipt.
(2) Wist my Poll Tax Liabilities to the City of St. John's may amount to at the time of my decease I cannot say but my executor will be able to asormt ascertain by means of the following.

    Active Worker until Nov. 2, 1929
    Small income until Dec 1930
    Entered Sanatarium Dec. 2, 1929
Robert A. Templeton, my executor I bequeath to you one hundred and fifty ($150.00) dollars to cover expenses of administration and any other debts I may be owing at my death. If Mr. Templeton refuses to accept this money it is to be donated to some deserving charity of his selection. IT IS NOT TO PASS INTO THE HANDS OF MY HEIRS.
Fourthly. The balance of my property I bequeath to my mother, Fanny Cook, to do with as she will.

Codicil

Having completed negotiations for the possible publication of my song, "The Theme Song of Life (I love you) and knowing that my health is some what precarious, I add this codicil;
(1) That I shall deposit in the Bank of Nova Scotia, St. John's Branch Newfoundland, such sums of money as I shall see fit if accruing from any songs I may have published.
(2) That such deposit shall be in my name until my death. Thirty days after my demise the administrator shall notify said Bank that all monies in said Bank shall be entered in the name of James Clyde Cook, to whom I bequeath same.
(3) The said James Clyde Cook is not at liberty to touch said monies until he has attained his twenty first birthday, after which he may do with them as he pleases.
(4) The above bequest shall be separate from any other bequests I have made. Any monies apart from those accruing from songs shall be deposited in some other Bank and be governed by the terms of the last bequest in my will.
It is my earnest desire that my mother shall (if I have not already done so) pay Dr. J.O. Fraser from monies received from my estate, for medical attendance while I was in his care.
