Will of Agnes Cowan
from Newfoundland will books volume 6 pages 14-15 probate year 1893

Last Will and Testament of
Agnes Cowan of St. John's
Hospital Matron deceased.

      I Agnes Cowan being of sound mind do declare this as my last will and Testament I request that the Rev. Moses Harvey and the Rev. Moses Monroe will act as my executors. I desire that all monies standing in my name in Government Debentures amounting to Fourteen hundred dollars and the amount to my credit in the Savings Bank to be held in trust by my Executors for the benefit of my sister Betsey Cowan during her lifetime: the interest thereof to be paid to her half yearly. After the death of my sister Betsey Cowan I desire that the sum of five hundred dollars be at the disposal of my executors to provide for her funeral expenses and that the balance remaining after such payment be given as compensation to the person with whom she may have lived after my decease up till the time of her death. I desire that on the death of my sister Betsey Cowan a sum of eighty dollars be paid to each of my nieces, daughters of Robert Cowan: and that a sum of twenty dollars be paid to each of my nephews, sons of my brother Robert Cowan and a like sum to each of my nephews sons of Jane Hamlyn my sister. I desire that the sum of fifty dollars be paid to the augmentation Fund of the Presbyterian Church in Canada; and the sum of forty dollars to the Mission Band of St Andrews Church St. John's.
I desire that the balance remaining after payment of the aforesaid bequests be equally divided between my sister Jane Hamlyn and Caroline widow of my brother Robert. Should either or both of these die before my sister Betsey Cowan, the share to which they would have been entitled if then living I desire to be equally divided among their surviving children. I desire that at my decease my watch and chain be given to my niece and namesake Agnes Cowan daughter of Robert Cowan and that any ornaments and other property of which I may die possessed be distributed in accordance with a memorandum which will be attached to this will to which will I attach my signature on this 9th day of January in the year 1893. (Sgd) Agnes Cowan. We hereunder signed witness the signature of this will on the 9th day of January 1893. (Sgd) Henry Shea. (Sgd) Lizzie Morgan.
