Last Will and Testament of
Catherine Dunphy of St. John’s
Married Woman deceased

This is the last will and testament of me Catherine Dunphy of Saint John's in the Island of Newfoundland Widow made this eleventh day of January in the Year of Our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Ninety Eight. I give devise and bequeath to my brother Luke Power residing at Souris P.E.I. the sum of one hundred dollars also I give and bequeath to my brother William Power the sum of two hundred dollars. Also I give devise and bequeath to my sister Ann Healy of Bridport Sydney one hundred dollars. Also I give and bequeath to my nephew (residing at Petty Harbor) James Healy one hundred dollars. Also I give and bequeath to Catherine Healy child of my nephew James Healy two hundred dollars. Also to my niece Lizzie Stewart wife of Colin Stewart I give and bequeath four hundred dollars. Also to my sister Lizzie Walsh residing at Petty Harbor I give and bequeath the sum of two hundred dollars. Also I give and bequeath to my sister Bridget Healy residing at Petty Harbor two hundred dollars. Also I give and bequeath to Michael Dunphy son of Thomas Dunphy Cooper residing at Saint John's four hundred dollars. Also I give and bequeath to the Reverend John Scott Reverend Dean Ryan Reverend Roger Tierney Reverend W. Jackman Reverend Edmund Crook twenty dollars each. Also I give and bequeath to the Sperioress of the Mercy Convent Military Road Saint John's for the purposes of the Convent one hundred dollars. Also I give and bequeath to the Reverend Mr. Slattery President of St. Bonaventures College twenty dollars. TO HAVE and TO HOLD the before mentioned sums to the afore mentioned parties to their use for ever. I devise and bequeath to the said Lizzie Stewart my dwelling house in which I now reside and all of the said furniture in the said house TO HAVE and TO HOLD the same for her use for ever. I devise and bequeath to Catherine Healy and Elizabeth Healy daughters of James Healy one bed and bedding and iron bedstead each TO HAVE and TO HOLD the same to their use for ever. The bequest of two hundred dollars to the said Catherine Healy is to be paid to her on her attaining the age of twenty one years and in the event of her death the said bequest I devise and bequeath to her sisters and brothers during her infancy the interest arising from the said bequest shall be paid to the parents of the said Catherine Healy towards her maintenance and support. Any of the monies remaining in the hands of my executor after the payment of the above sums I devise that he shall invest the same and from the interest arising therefrom cause the sacrifice of the Mass to be celebrated in perpetuity for the repose of my soul and that of my husband. I nominate and appoint Edward P. Morris Executor of this my will. In testimony whereof I the testatrix have hereunto set my hand at Saint John's aforesaid the day and year first above written. Signed by the said testatrix as and for her last will and testament in our presence who in her presence and in the presence of each other hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses.
