Will of Frances Greene
from Newfoundland will books volume 8 pages 501 to 504 probate year 1908

In re
      Frances Greene          deceased.

      In the name of God Amen I Frances Greene of Water Street Harbor Grace Single woman do make publish and declare this as and for my last will and testament

First I will and direct that all my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses shall be paid

Secondly I will and desire that from and out of the rents of my property which will become due and be payable during the year next succeeding my decease my executor hereinafter named shall pay to the following named parties the following sums:-

  • To the Right Reverend Ronald Macdonald Bishop of Harbor Grace the sum of one hundred dollars.
  • To the Reverend Superioress for the time being of the Presentation Convent at Harbor Grace the sum of one hundred dollars for the use and purposes of the said Convent
  • To the Reverend Superioress for the time being of the Presentation Convent at Carbonear the sum of Forty dollars for the use and purposes of the said Convent.
  • To the Reverend Father Whelan of Whitbourne the sum of twenty dollars
  • To Revd. Father Walker of Brigus the sum of twenty dollars
  • To Revd. John Mackay of Holyrood the sum of twenty dollars.
  • To Revd. Joseph Murphy formerly of Holyrood but at present in Montreal the sum of twenty dollars
  • To Revd. Felix McCarthy of Carbonear the sum of twenty dollars.
  • To Revd. P. W. Browne of Bonavista the sum of twenty dollars
  • To Revd. Thomas Lynch of Kings Cove the sum of twenty dollars
  • To Revd. John Lynch of Little Bay the sum of twenty dollars
  • To Revd John Roe of Northern Bay the sum of fifty dollars
  • To Revd John March of Harbor Grace the sum of fifty dollars

the said bequests to Revd. Father Whelan, Revd. Father Walker, Revd John Mackey Revd Joseph Murphy Rev Felix McCarthy Rev P.W. Browne Revd. Thomas Lynch Revd John Lynch Rev John Roe and Revd John March respectively being for the Celebration of Masses for the repose of my soul and of the souls of my parents and of my brothers and sisters.

Thirdly I give devise and bequeath to the Right Reverend Ronald MacDonald Bishop of Harbor Grace all that and those my premises situate in Water Street in Harbor Grace and leased to Gillard in Trust in the first place from and out of the rents thereof to pay to my nephew Daniel Fitzgerald the sum of one hundred dollars per annum during his life time to be paid to him half yearly but in the event of no rent being in any one or more years received for the said premises from any cause whatsoever then this payment shall cease whilst such nonreceipt of rent continues and in the event of the rent received in any one year not being sufficient to make full payment thereof this bequest shall abate proportionately As to the residue of the rents I will and direct that my said executor shall keep the said premises insured and pay the premiums costs and charges of such insurance from and out of the said residue and also to pay annually such amount as may be required to care for and keep in order the grave plot in the cemetery in Harbor Grace in which I with my relatives shall be buried and as regards the said plot I will and direct that no person other than myself shall hereafter be buried - and subject to such payments and each of them to hold the said premises in trust for such charitable or religious purposes or institutions as the said Right Reverend Ronald MacDonald may deem proper and I request that he will take such measures as may be necessary to secure that his successors as Bishop of Harbor Grace shall continue to apply the said property to the same charitable or religious purposes or institutions.

Fourth as regards the house and premises on which I lately lived I give devise and bequeath the same to the said Right Reverend Ronald MacDonald in trust for the charitable or religious purposes or institutions as declared in the third paragraph of this my will.

Fifth as to the household furniture piano and effects in the room which I occupy at Mrs Farrells in Harbor Grace    I give devise and bequeath the same to my grandnieces Rachel and Mary Fitzgerald

Sixth as regards all lands and other property goods chattels and effects and all estate rights and interests therein or thereto of which I am possessed or to which I am or may at any time hereafter become entitled in any way under or by virtue of the will of my late mother Rachel Green formerly of Harbor Grace I give devise and bequeath the same and also all the rest residue and remainder of my property estate and effects to the Right Reverend Ronald MacDonald Bishop of Harbor Grace in trust in the first place to say or cause to be celebrated anniversary masses for the repose of my soul and the repose of the souls of my parents my brothers and sisters and of my relatives to the third generation and then in trust for charitable or religious purposes or institutions in like manner as directed in the third clause of this my will.

Seventh I do hereby nominate and appoint the said Right Reverend Ronald MacDonald Bishop of Harbor Grace aforesaid or in the event of his death his successor as Bishop of Harbor Grace as executor of this my will and Lastly I do hereby revoke annul and declare void all wills by me heretofore made In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand at Harbor Grace this 28th day of April A.D. 1904 (sgd) Frances Green Signed by the said Frances Greene as and for her last will and testament in our presence who in her presence and the presence of each other have hereto set our hands as witnesses on the day and year and at the place above written (sgd) Margaret Farrell (sgd) James M Kent.
