Will of John McL Muir
from Newfoundland will books volume 6 pages 152-153 probate year 1894

Last Will and Testament of
John McL Muir of Bonne Bay
Trader deceased.

      In the name of God Amen I John McLa Muir of Bonne Bay District of St. Barbe Colony of Newfoundland being weak in body but of sound mind and understanding do make this my last will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say.

First. I give and bequeath my soul into the hands of God who gave it.

2nd It is my will that my body be decently interred in the Church of England Cemetery of Bonne Bay and that my funeral be conducted without unnecessary ostentation and that the expenses thereof together with all my just debts be fully paid.

3rd That my business be closed as soon after my death as circumstances will permit in the following manner.

  • First That all my stock of goods provisions and general merchandise be sold by auction or otherwise.
  • Secondly To compromise with any and all of my dealers whose names and accounts will be found in my ledger kept for that purpose. also all those whose names are in my memo Book
  • And collect all such debts as soon as circumstances will permit and that the same be forwarded to my creditors as soon and as often as possible.
  • 4th I desire that my property in Rocky Harbor be sold for what ever it will realize the proceeds to be forwarded to my wife Isabella McL Muir now living in St. John's.
  • 5th I give and bequeath my trunk with all it contains with my clothes, bed, bedding and all my books (except Masonic Books or works) also to my wife Isabella McL Muir now living in St. John's.
  • 6th I give all my Masonic works to Simeon Avery J. P. and John R. Roberts P.M. to be divided between them
  • 7th I give and bequeath my watch and chain to my brother in law Robert Templeton

And lastly I hereby constitute and appoint Simeon Avery J. P. John R. Roberts P.M. and Frances Cox to be Executors of this my last Will and Testament revoking and annulling all former wills by me made and ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and Testament.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this twenty fourth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety four. (Sgd) John McL Muir. Signed and declared by the above named John McL Muir as his last will and Testament in the presence of us who at his request have signed as witnesses of the same. (Sgd) Richard Shepard. (Sgd) George W. Wilson (Sgd) John E. Roberts.
(The fifteenth line of section three of the annexed will should read forwarded to my wife Isabel McL Muir as soon and as often as possible (sgd) S. Avery.)
