Hello! I am researching my ancestors the Rohans, who I believe emigrated to Newfoundland from southern Ireland late eighteenth century or early nineteenth. My great great grandfather Edward Rohan was born in Newfoundland in 1821 and left to go to sea at the age of 17. He joined the British Merchant Navy and died at sea in 1872. He married Marilla Long in Bromley, Kent, England in 1862. On the marriage certificate his father's name is recorded as Patrick Rohan. I would very much like to trace his family tree in Newfoundland. Any information relating to this query would be extremely welcome. Many thanks. Jill. Cambridgeshire, England.

After much trawling through the archives, and by a process of elimination, I believe that I have found a reference to my ancestor Patrick Rohan. He appears in the voters lists of 1835 and 1839 for Carbonear, Irish Town. Does anyone have any pointers as to how I can discover more about the inhabitants of Irish Town at this time?
